Will the site give its blessing?
#1

Hello friends of the SHL,

Most of our 250+ active members are passionate about the league or at least want to see it do well which is one of the great selling points this site has to new members. and with this large and diverse member list, the importance of rules which promote fairness and equal oppertunity are paramount. i think we all can agree on that..

But from time to time this way of thinking conflicts with what would make the league better. Case in point the new IIHF play by play implamentation for the gold medal games.

There are 2 purposes for the typical play by plays used in post season. 1 is to 'try' and entertain the league in some of the important moments in a season..... and the other is to distribute part of the XXX amount of TPE available to our members each season. and with that the league takes the good with the bad and hopes that the people only signing up to gain TPE will do a good job trying to entertain an audience.

But the IIHF medal game PBP is differant. its just '1' game and its sole purpose is to entertain the league by bringing excitement to its most important moment. theres no confliction here and the strategy is straight forward.. to do this we have to bring in a solid play by guy ready to entertain us.

It's a simple solution that the IIHF wont engage because of the possible flack it would receieve for not making this 1 game an open lottery to everyone. which is understandable..

But I personally believe that most would rather see this 1 game kick ass each season.. and not make a big deal about the IIHF picking a PBP guy. especially if the compensation is just SHL money.

So I'm on mobile, can't read your full title, and can't find anywhere in your body of text what your suggestion is.

Still, 6/9 would implement

So if I'm reading between the lines, the suggestion is for IIHF HO to nominate from a select body of people to PbP the gold medal game. If I have that wrong, correct me. If not, a counter-argument:

I've always been under the impression IIHF preached inclusivity. It's the one part of the league where new users just starting out in juniors can play against the SHL elite. Two-years-ago ztevans nearly wet his pants seeing his player score against Jakob Tanner in his first tournament. Sure, it was Ireland during a much darker time for that country and Tanner wasn't so much goaltending as saving his own life in the sim, but hey! I scored on him!

It's why there are rules requiring actives to play over inactives as well, and why a lot of newer users get their first managerial job in IIHF. In fact, the addition of WJC has given even more new users their first dose at management.

So why wouldn't this proposal completely fly in the face of that? Especially with fewer PbP opportunities available on the SHL/SMJHL side, there are fewer opportunities for new users to demonstrate whether or not they are good at them.

Limiting who could do this one PbP would help.the rich get richer at best (if not turn into an outright good old boys network of whoever is friends with HO) and, in my opinion, be inconsistent with the purpose and goals of this off-season event.

Keep the lotto, but only let someone do a pbp if their previous one was decent. That way everyone has a chance to redeem themselves if they had a bad one, but helps weed out the lower quality ones

As ideal as it is to preach inclusivity... go and read that PBP, and ask yourself if it's really up to the standards we want for a championship deciding game.

PBPs are only worthwhile or interesting if they're going to people who are going to serious effort with them.

My only other concern is quality = amount of time dedicated to which would = slower pbp, which bothers a lot of people.

This is somewhat different from the main points being debated here but I think the sim for the pbper should be given the day before the pbp actually happens, so the pbper can write all of it and then just post parts of it intermittently. That way it's high quality and it doesn't keep anyone waiting.

You're not supposed to publish the thing as you write it- you're supposed to get it all pre-written, and then make posts minute by minute. What you're describing is what competent PBPers already do.

Ya. I generally despise the PBP format, but it's not a universal sucking thing- there are some bad/lazy eggs spoiling it for everyone else, and it'd be nice to ensure they can't be involved.

So just fuck everybody, right? How are people supposed to prove they are good at them if they don't get a chance?

If you want to blacklist certain users who are given that opportunity and squander it, fine. But to outright eliminate a large section of the interested user base for one bad egg is a knee-jerk overreaction.

they get their chance during the normal games. signficant pbp's like these should be done by somebody who has proven they can do it.

honestly i hate pbp's but i think that's fair.
