Can we please have a conversation about this? I don't want this to turn into a TD post by any means, but an actual conversation about this.
I think its a bit odd that the WJC HO and IIHF Commish positions are paid but none of the SMJHL HO, SHL HO, SHL GM, or SMJHL GM positions are paid. The SHL/SMJHL positions are really the backbone of this community and I feel like that is a glaring issue that has been blatantly ignored for whatever reason.
I have no ill will against the WJC or the IIHF and I appreciated the work those guys put in to the website. I just feel like this is something that needs to be taken into consideration. I am by no means asking for the WJC HO and IIHF commissioners to lose their pay. I just think that if someone is going to dedicate time into running this community, they should be compensated for their efforts and this is an issue that honestly and earnestly needs to be discussed.
I think its ridiculous to expect GMs and HO members to put efforts into making media on top of all of the other things they have going on in the SHL to make this community what it is. I understand this may be biased coming from an SMJHL GM, but I truly think this is a concern that needs to be addressed and my personal ties to this position are not influencing my start to this conversation.
I know that these positions are highly sought after and there would be no issues filling spots as people step down. But this is not an issue of supply and demand, nor should that be part of this discussion. I am a firm believer that people should be compensated for their efforts to this community, regardless of the popularity of the position they hold.
Anyways, I look forward to seeing what ya'll have to say.
GM's deserved to be paid. I don't know about HO as I've never been in there to see how much work they have to do, but GM's do so much. SMJHL GM's are basically babysitters for the new players, which takes a ton of time and effort getting everybody adjusted to the site. SHL GM's also have to devote a huge amount of time if they want to have a successful team. Most GM's don't have nearly enough time to have another job, which is brutal if they aren't someone who can pump out media or graphics.
I've been saying it for like 15 seasons at this point, but GM's deserve at least a small little bonus for the amount of time and effort they put into this site. Paying them a good salary also would increase the competition for these jobs, which is only good for the league as they won't have to hire someone who isn't qualified because they barely got any applications.
Makes too much sense IMO, would be the first thing I would do if I was in the HO.

Are you saying a sense of pride and accomplishment isn't enough? :o

I would coach an NHL team for free. Doesn't mean I'd be good at it. I'd probably ruin the league.

Will agree with Sleepy, especially on the GM case. The work and importance of the SMJHL's GM's is, perhaps, one of the highest ones on the site, as they tutor, teach some basics and introduce the new players to the league.
I was about to drop into another inactivity before Keygan actually explained to me that Defense is a God stat needed for every position and that kind of saved Loks career and changed the way how I enjoyed SHL within one season.

I've seen both sides of the argument for GM pay so it makes sense either way for me. By paying the GMs it then makes it where someone who potentially doesn't care about the team as much and half wants the paycheck to come in for the job. That being said I do think GMs should be paid. Even if it's a little. The amount of work put in is way too high for there to not be.
As far as HO I don't think they/we should ever be paid. I think HO should exist to help the league as best as possible and anyone who truly wants to better the league takes the job because of that. Not chasing some money.
