PGS Game 1: Montreal Militia vs Colorado Raptors
#16

Defensive forward of the Game sponsored by Trojan Condoms

Today marked the first day of the SMJHL, and our first defensive forward of the game is Colorado's Derek Deffner

Deffner tallied up an impressive 5 minutes and 2 seconds on the penalty kill during the course of the game. This actually accounted for a little less than 33% of his total play time. During the game, Deffner won 8/16 faceoffs, got credit for 1 hit, was able to get an short handed assist which speaks volumes about his penalty kill play, and ended up a +1 overall.

Though the raptors would end up losing the game, Deffner's defensive efforts were a major factor in keeping the score close.

Some said that Troy McClure III might be withdrawn this Colorado Raptors season, but I think he put all doubts to rest with his play tonight. Colorado has decided to focus on youth, trading away 2 high-end players before the season started. Before this game, spectators wondered how Troy McClure III might respond to shipping out his old teammates and the teams outlook shifting more towards the future. He showed the character he had tonight by being ravenous on the puck. He threw 4 hits, took 8 PIMs, and capped it off with an assist. It may not have been the best game for the young player, but it was anything but apathetic. (113 words)

Week One. Game One. Montreal Militia Militia  versus Colorado Raptors Raptors .

Analysis of the First Star:

Militia Harvey Danger Militia

In the first game of the season, Harvey Danger has made his presence known by scoring two goals in a solid win by the Montreal Militia. His first goal was a beauty.  On the power play, in the Colorado zone, Cody Johanson wins an important face-off, chucks it over to Charlie Schieck, who fakes the shot and throws the Colorado goalie out of position.  Schieck then does a nice buttery pass back to Harvey Danger who snipes a rocket into the back of the net.

His second goal was much the same.  Again on the power play, Cody Johanson wins the face-off in Colorado territory but this time, sends it straight back to Harvey Danger who does not even hesitate to deliver a blistering shot that leaves Colorado looking like they were standing still.

Fantastic game Harvey!

SSPN Missed Opportunity of the Game

9:26, first period:  Kazlauskas shoots wide, then gets stuffed

Nine minutes into the first, a messy series of pass transactions ends with Gvidas Kazlauskas receiving a pass in the neutral zone.  Kazlauskas carries the puck into Montreal's zone and rips one off the point...far wide!  Vrana tracks the puck on his way around, but can't leave the net to stop it.  A fortuitous bounce gives Kazlauskas a second attempt.  He goes for the wrap-around, but Vrana never loses sight, stopping the attempt and covering the puck.  Just 13 seconds after a Militia goal, Kazlauskas had a chance to put Montreal squarely on their heels, and missed just wide.  The episode must have shaken Kazlauskas's confidence, as he wouldn't shoot again until the final ninety seconds of the game.

As we always say...

He's gotta want that one back!

Cheers Bitter Beer Award of the Game Cheers

Alex Winters Raptors (-2, 10:33 played)
Difficult stat line to take when you are only on the ice for five to six shifts. Gotta get stronger on the puck and limit the turnovers if you are going to be able to consistently compete. Early in the season sure... but a -2 with limited ice time may have coaches worries. Throwing in a paltry five for thirteen in faceoff success, it would be safe to assume Winters is likely to find the hot seat if he doesn't step it up a level.

The SMJHL Bust of the Game Award

The Bust of the Game for today may come as a surprise to some, since he was on the winning team - Viktor Valentine. Valentine had 21 minutes of ice time (one of the highest on the team) and managed an impressive 0 points and -2 on the evening. He was on the ice for both goals against and couldn't manage to find net, twine, or the stick of a teammate for a goal. In a game dominated by Montreal, Valentine looked to be invisible on the night. We know Viktor can jump back and find his groove again; one bad game doesn't define a player, and this game won't define him.

A big win in the first game of the year for the Montreal Militia, a rejuvenated team who picked up a lot of talent in this year's SMJHL entry draft. They started slowly in the game allowing Colorado to jump out to an early lead which they were able to draw back even only 5 minutes later. Montreal came out exceptionally strongly in the third period, tallying three goals and burying Colorado for their first win of the season. With a great performance by many players new and old, the Militia swept the star ceremony and gave fans a lot to go home happy about. Expectations for this season are high after their performance last year, and Montreal is hoping that their rookie talent can quickly take them back to the level that they were.

Turning Point

The season opener was a solid match-up on paper. Big things were expected from Montreal this season but Colorado was able to stand toe to toe with them for the majority of the game. The first two periods were very tight but Montreal managed to pull ahead for good a little over midway through the third period. Nate Forsberg was called for hooking and Tutankhamun took advantage by scoring a minute later. Montreal successfully fought off a power play a few minutes later and Colorado just deflated. Hudson scored again for the Militia with less than five minutes to play and that was all she wrote. Impressive opener for Montreal.

Tonight's shot blocker of the night is Nico Wallner, of the Colorado Raptors.

Though it was a losing effort tonight for Wallner, the man gave up his body for his team, blocking 5 of Montreal's shots. Wallner got it started early in the first period dropping down to block a shot by Mason Hudson before husband picked it back up and tossed a much weaker and low percentage shot on net that was gobbled up by the goalie with no issues.

The most important came at 11:05 of the 3rd with the score tied 2-2, The Militia were pressing and like he had 3 other times in the game already, Wallner laid out yet again as Harvey Danger had an open net off the rebound, blocking the would be go ahead goal.

*** THE MOST EXCITING MINUTE OF THE GAME ***

(For my PGS Analyses, I will find the 1-minute stretch of the game which I deemed to be the most exciting, and give a play by play thereof

12:00 - 13:00. 3rd Period

Montrea; on the powerplay here, 8 minutes to go in this game,

Valentine carries the puck into the zone, passes to Hrudec.

Hrudec SHOOTS! It goes wide!

Valentine retrieves it int he corner, tries to make a pass to the slot, but it is intercepted by Reid and he clears the puck back down the ice!

Chance for the PK team to change lines, they get fresh defenseman on the ice!

Tutankhamen skates back behind his own net to retrieve the puck, waits for his teammates to circle back, then moves up and sends a pass to Valentine. Valentine carries the puck into Raptors territory, setting up, he finds Kazarian with a pass, who fakes a shot then passes back to Danniil.

Montreal unable to find an opening so they dump it deep and make a line change!

McClure tries to take advantage of the change and tries to hit a streaking player for a shorthanded breakaway!

But Ulrich stifles the play with an intercepted pass and now Montreal has an odd-man rush into the zone!

Pass to Schieck and he fires a hard SHOT!

SAVE! by Crawfling!

REBOUND!

Schieck tries to bang it home as he crashes the net but a sprawling Crawfling is able to stack his pads and keep the puck out!

HE covers it up for a whistle and a faceoff!

Deffner wins the draw for Colorado, Maui quickly skates behind the net and slaps it out around the boards and the puck skitters all the way down into Montreal's zone!

Vrana plays it to Johansen who quickly sends a breakout pass to Danger, racing in on the outside!

He has speed, he cuts in, tries a between-the-legs trick shot, but it does not fool Crawfling and he makes a gloves save and covers up!

Faceoff again, this time won by Johansen, straight back to Danger, the one-timer!

Goal Goal Goal HE SCOOOOORRRRRESSSSS!!!! Goal Goal Goal

Harvey Danger with a huge blast to give Montreal the lead! It's 3-2 for the Militia!

Right off the draw, Montreal gains possession again, but the whistle blows!

Now it is Colorado's turn to reply on the powerplay, as Pavel Pivonka is being sent to the box for 2 Minutes for Roughing!

--------------------------------

So, Montreal converts ont he powerplay, finally solving Crawfling on the 3rd shot of the minute for them, but then a huge momentum swing as they immediately get called for a penalty of their own, giving Colorado a chance to tie it up!

Definitely an exciting minute if play!
