Game 1: Montreal vs Colorado
Militia 4 -  Raptors 2

Time to recap the first game of season 42 SMJHL regular season! Tonight we'll be giving you a period by period summary, the highlight of the period,  our TSN turning point and Kings three crowns.

Period 1
Well the Raptors started this period off right by great work by Tye Maximino on the penalty kill. The Raptors get called for the early penalty but they end up being the one who scores with the man down. Giving them the most important first goal of the game, and the momentum. But penalty troubles will continue to plague the Raptors. Harvey Danger with the point shot on the power play to knot the game at 1's going into the second. Colorado lucky to come out tied after giving up FIVE! penalties in the first. Spending half the period short handed is no way to win a game.

Period Highlight: 1. Colorado Raptors , Tye Maximino 1 (Maui 1, Derek Deffner 1) at 3:56 (SH)

Period 2

The seciond period was a quite affair, but it brings us our....TSN TURNING POINT: The game is tied, and Colorado is pressing, momentum is all Raptors at this point. Zakhar Turakov skates in on the wing fires a shot wide of the net, Jake Reid is there to collect the puck open net, and Petr Vrana with the save! Raptors win the draw, Cody Johansen set up Tye Maximino, excellent chance! and Vrana again! No rebound! Montreal wins the faceoff in their own zone, but Raptors won't stop, Sulak knocks Kevin off the puck and sets up the open Jake Reid for a goal and Petr Vrana again! Big save! No rebound. And just like that the wind is out of the Raptors sails.

Period Highlight: 11:04 of 2nd period - Rafe Ulrich is hit by Troy McClure III and loses puck.

Period 3

After surving the push back in the second period from the raptors, who again took another 2 minors in the second, the Militia woke up and came out blazing in the third. 2 minutes in and Rahotep Tutankhamum gets his first goal off the second beautiful feed of the game from Charlie Schieck. But these pesky raptors won't stop nipping. Forsberg replies with the big goal 3 minutes later to keep the game tied. You have to think if the Raptors could of stayed out of the box they could of won this game. They take another two minor penalties in the third. The second is a Roughing minor by Maui which costs the club big. Harvey Danger scores his second power play goal of the game to retake the lead with 7 minutes left and Mason Hudson adds the insurance goal only 3 minutes later to put the dagger into the game. Montreal with the big win to start the season.
Period Highlight: 14:39 of 3rd period - Shot by Tony Pepperoni. 14:39 of 3rd period - Stopped by Petr Vrana without a rebound.

King's Three Crowns

1. Harvey Danger, 2 goals, 4 shots, 1 hit in 20 minutes of ice time. Coming out of the gate hot!!
2. Piotr Czerkawski, 8 shots, 1 hit. Didn't show on the score sheet, but he was peppering the goalie and generating offence.
3. Nico Wallner, 5 blocked shots! Are you kidding me? Pure sacrifice, pure warrior. Grit grinder of the game.

The J's Media Hit for Hit:

Raptors Colorado Raptors - Sulak O'Hritea Raptors
[Image: Chara-Hits-Two-Players3475.gif]

The hit of the night from the Colorado Avalanche came from Sulak O'Hritea, who was like a wrecking ball by sending his man into another player. Early in the second period, O'Hritea was able to lay the body on Charlie Schieck in a scrum along the boards. The force of the hit was great enough to send Schieck into O'Hritea's teammate Nate Forsberg. The hit would knock the puck away from Schieck, but would not lead to a play. The hit shows the true power of O'Hritea, and could easily be the highlight of the season for Colorado if they can't string together wins.

Militia Montreal Militia Militia- Rahotep Tutankhamun
[Image: c50a5a5e76c06b2050ab36714ea72dda.gif]

For the Montreal Militia, we have Rahotep Tutankhamun delivering a huge shoulder to shoulder check on Colorado Defenseman Troy McClure III. McClure had no where to go, so Tutankhamun was able to lay the hammer down and drop McClure in his own defensive end. McClure would lose the puck, and Montreal would gain possession, but no play would develop from it. That's the type of hit you want to see in hockey though, a nice clean check that separates the man from the puck. The only thing injured on that play was McClure's pride, as he got laid out due to his own decisions.

Rookie Performance of the Game:
The rookie performance of the game comes from Colorado Raptors rookie Nate Forsberg, who scored his first junior goal in his first junior game, as well as being plus one during the game and going 10/16 for face offs. In his first game. Forsberg proved he can be a player Colorado depends on as the season progresses. Forsberg's first goal was a beauty of a goal, as he was able to fight off the Montreal Defenseman and undress the goalie after a poor poke check attempt by Montreal's goalie Petr Vrana. Not a bad way to start the year for the rookie, who will hopefully see more ice time if he continues to play well for Colorado.

[This is a collaboration between myself and @39alaska39 as we each wrote one character, so please make the payout to both]

Welcome to the Subway intermission report, I'm Eddie Streitzner alongside Al Askavich and we have just witnessed the first twenty minutes of the new SMJHL season. The Montreal Militia and the Colorado Raptors sit tied at one a piece and so far, the special teams have been the story of the game. Rookie Tye Maximino got the Raptors the lead four minutes into the game while his team was down a man and the Militia's powerplay made up for their mistake a few minutes later when Harvey Danger tied the game on the powerplay. So far there have been four penalties in the game and all four have gone to the Colorado Raptors. So Al, as the Raptors are fielding a very young team this season, do you think there inexperience is showing here or is it just a fluke? What does Colorado need to do better to avoid constantly going down a man for the rest of the game?

Well Eddie, you’ve gotta look at the penalties that they have taken. These aren’t good penalties to take. Plus two of them were by team captain Troy McClure III! You can’t be taking lazy penalties as the captain of the young team, especially early in the game. You’ve gotta be making smarter decisions, otherwise momentum is going to swing the other way and it’s hard to get that back. It bit them on Danger’s goal like you said, and you have to expect things are going to be more of the same after the break. Some positives the Raptors can take away though are the play of some of their rookies. Obviously Maximino with the goal, but also Andrew Martin’s skills in the faceoff dot tonight. Let’s speculate for a second here though. If you’re the Raptors coach, Eddie, what are you saying to the team during this intermission?

Well for a young team like them confidence is the key, especially when going up against a more experienced and, let's face it, more skilled squad. I'd go easy on the boys and try to boost their self-esteem, tell them to keep doing what they are doing, play a simple game, get the puck deep and win the battles, but also don't be afraid to take a risk and try something special from time to time. Maximino has already shown with his shorthanded goal that you can score from any situation no matter how much the odds seem to be stacked against you. If you can instil the belief into the team that they can score in any situation and from any position then that'll do wonders for their development not just long-term, but over the course of a single game as well. But of course the Raptors aren't the only team playing here - which players from the Montreal Militia have impressed you so far and what do you think they need to do if they want to emerge victorious against such a hungry, yet inexperienced team?

With the Militia, it’s starts at the back. Petr Vrana, fresh off of winning gold at the World Juniors, is an absolutely fantastic settling presence at the back. It does a lot for a team to have that kind of player in net and he’s done well, just the one goal against, but on a brilliant back door pass from Maui. Another guy that stood out in the first for Montreal was Charlie Schieck, he had a great give and go with Danger on his goal and that’s something that stood out to me in the first. I know we’re running a bit short on time here, but I just want to say, keep an eye out on faceoffs. Winning or losing in the circle can really change how your offense runs. With that, we’re going to send you back down to InGEN Arena for the second period. Thanks for joining us for the Subway intermission report.

JayWhy's Special Teams Analysis/Turning Point of the Game

Take one look at the three stars of the game, you'll notice the third overall selection in the S42 SHL Entry Draft atop the list, Harvey Danger with two powerplay goals.

Now it's one thing to allow two powerplay goals, it's another to do so to a defenseman. However, by the time the goals were scored, the penalty kill was exhausted and the puck was flowing. Let's take a look at the key statistic of this game: the penalty minutes.

Colorado had 8 total penalty kills, 16 minutes a man short. That is an astounding number on it's own, nearly an entire period short-handed throughout the game. One player, however, had half the total. Troy McClure III had two minors in the first period -- a holding and roughing -- as well as two in the second -- interference and holding the stick. While it's great to have variety in your life, and interesting that he didn't have the same penalty twice, it is a detriment to his team. His first penalty led directly to the first goal against for Colorado, as Harvey Danger teed up a strong shot off a face-off play and drove it home just SIX seconds into the powerplay!

This is unacceptable of a veteran player like McClure, and something that absolutely set the tone for the Raptors this evening. If they want to win and have a shot at playing playoff hockey, they'll need to reign in their emotions quickly. Not only that, they'll have to be able to actually rely on their few veteran presences like McClure to hold down the fort.

Speaking of veteran presences with crucial mistakes, in the third period we go. Nate Forsberg, a rookie, takes a penalty for hooking. The penalty kill is tired, and Harvey Danger makes them pay again on a good set up and some back-and-forth from the wall to the point. However, it's what happens next that is important. Three seconds after the goal, Montreal takes a penalty. They're only up by one, at this point and a top player in Pavel Pivonka is going off the ice. This is the moment for Colorado to capitalize on the man advantage and take back this game.

Instead, Maui makes a bad mental error and takes a roughing penalty just 20 seconds into the powerplay. This becomes the turning point of the game, as it isn't yet out of reach. However, by now you can see the bench get out of it mentally as well as the crowd, and everything becomes elementary.

That would be the final nail in the coffin for Colorado, and just goes to show the importance of capitalizing on your chances and the toll physical exhaustion can take on one's mental state to make such a mistake.

An old man's dream ended. A young man's vision of the future opened wide. Young men have visions, old men have dreams. But the place for old men to dream is beside the fire.

So today's Barstool underrated player of the game is Mason Hudson of the Montreal Militia. There were many players in today's game between the Montreal Militia and the Colorado Raptors who deserve this honor but lets take a look at masons game and find out why mason deserved to have his name called. Mason had 4 shots credited, scored a goal in the 3rd period of today's game, as well as a +1 rating. All while spending just shy of 10 minutes on the ice. If mason keeps producing like he did in tonight's game the rookie 4th rounder will be forcing Montreal's hand in giving him more ice time, thus giving him more opportunities to put the puck in the back of the net.

Hello and welcome back to Fail of the game, brought to you by Harvey's.

Today's segment is starring Maui. Not only did the Raptors defenseman put his team in a bad situation, he did it looking as ridiculous as can be in a hockey game. As his team was on the PP and trailing only by one to the Montreal Militia, the defenseman took a bad roughing penalty. Angry at himself for ruining the powerplay and his team's chances to level the score, Maui had a little rage outburst that didn't end well. A reminder that you should never let your emotions get the best of you when you're on the ice.

Punching Bag Of The Game
Zakhar Turakov

Zakhar Turakov had a target on his back tonight, being hit 5 times. Rafe Ulrich looks to have had it out for Zakhar, accounting for 60% of the bruises on Zakhar's body. After the game, Zakhar was spotted with an ice pack strapped to his right shoulder and was sporting a black eye. Reports have also come in about a few stitches to his lower lip. Strange that he didn't miss any ice time for repairs. It'll be interesting to see what happens the next time these two teams play each other, especially any time these two are out on the ice.

Interview with Colorado Raptors GM InciteHysteria

1. How do you generally rate team performance in the season opening game?
I was very surprised by the way they played. We're a very young team and the way the team came together to make it a competitive game. I am really pleasantly surprised. I think the Raptors have a very bright future based on that game alone. Not even counting what has happened since.

2. Which player impressed you the most?
There have been a few big surprises. I think when you talk about Gvidas Kazlauskas, you talk about a player that has really shown his ability over the season so far. He fell way too far in the draft and I knew he had this kind of ability. But to see him use it so early it's really exciting. I'd also like to talk about Tony Pepperoni and Alex Winters. Both of them were fairly high picks in such a deep draft but they've really shown they have what it takes to be big time players in this league. I am overall very surprised and excited about the way ALL of the Colorado Raptors have played this season.  Also a big shoutout to Brando Sando who has now won 6 games in a row! What an outstanding year so far with so many young players!

3. First goal of the season for Colorado Raptors was scored Short-handed. Did you like your team's play in Penalty Killing?

Once again speaking about the youth of the team. I am very happy with the way the team has played on the Penalty Kill. I believe Penalty Kill is one of the hardest thing for a lot of young players to understand because it takes a lot of focus and dedication to excel there. Not only have all the young players bought in but they have also shown a penchant for being very good on the PK!

4. From which player are you waiting the biggest result in the season?
I'd say there is no way I can narrow it down at the moment. I expect the most out of the veteran players that have been established on this team so far. Of course I mean the majority of our defensive unit and our goaltender. Captain Troy McClure and fellow defenders Maui and Sachimo Zoidberg Jr. have really stepped up. Really says a lot when your top 5 scorers include 3 defenders. What a great bit they have pitched in this year. Very proud of everyone and can't see the rest of the season unfold.

Tonight's: Was it really just a 2-min?
We look into the early hit by Vladimir Vaskov on Rafe Ulrich.

It's only 2:25 of the first period as we get the first penalty of the season. The RW of the Colorado raptors decided to set the tone for the season.

Vaskov who had a pretty tame first season but showed glimpses of his talent in the playoffs got a minor for his check but should it have been more?

From the footage we can see that Ulrich does in fact have control of the puck if so only for a brief moment. So there's no fault in actually landing the hit, what Vaskov does though is approach from a dangerous angle where Ulrich have little means of defending himself.

While the check looks dangerous I agree that a minor penalty is enough.

Three Comments:
Ulrich has control of the puck making him a checkable player.

Vaskov set a rough tone, will he keep it up for the rest of the season?

There's elements of danger in the check, he's walking on thin ice if he keeps making checks like this one.

What happens on the dot with Mr. Faceoffs

Faceoffs takes up a big role in today's hockey. Every time you win a draw you get possession of the puck. The more your team have the puck, the more scoring chance you get and vice-versa. Which is why Centers take pride in winning them draws and why coaches love center men who do win them.

Montreal Militia: 45 wins on 86 faceoff taken ( 52,3%)
Colorado Raptors: 41 wins on 86 faceoff taken (47,7%)

Close game in the faceoff circle here. The Montreal Militia with the slight advantage.

The winner and the loser for today's game:

Winner: Montreal Militia's center Kevin Kazarian with 11 wins on 17 faceoff taken (64,7%)
Loser: Colorado Raptors' center Alex Winters with 5 wins on 13 faceoff taken (38,4%)

Game 1: Colorado Raptors vs. Montreal Militia
Raptors 2-4  Militia  Regulation Win

Rookie of the Game: Tye Maximino

This is Tye Maximino's first season in the smjhl, which makes this his first game. In this game he started off the scoring, making that his first goal in his first game, which by itself is impressive, but also managed to do it shorthanded. He was one of the only two to score in the season opener for Colorado, the other being Nate Forseberg who is also a rookie. Maximino was assisted by his linemate Derek Deffner, netting his first point in his career as well.

Body Breaker of the Game: (RW) Rafe Ulrich -  Militia

G  A  P  +/- PIM S  H  SB GA TA FO     MP     PP MP  PK MP
-------------------------------------------------------------------------
1  0  1  -1     0   3  5   0  0  0    0/1    18:31  4:57     0:49

This award doesn’t need much explanation folks. The body breaker of the game is a player who is going out there and throwing his weight. This player excels at putting the body to others and making every single player on the ice think about them when they’re out there. This was clearly Rahotep Tutankhamun tonight without question. There were quite a few out there mixing it up and throwing the body but, not only did Ulrich throw the body he also had an impressive night all over the ice. With 1 goal, 5 devastating hits to his name accompanied by 3 shots and 18:31 of ice time 5:46 spent split on the PP and PK this man was everywhere. As we see power forwards become rarer in the modern J and SHL, Tutankhamun is truly the perfect mold. A big bodied, amazing skater and scorer. This a hard hitting, bone breaking, goal scoring forward that many teams wish they could have. It is all these reasons that set apart our bone breaker of the game.
