San Francisco - Draft History
#1

Was looking at the prides past few drafts while preparing for the SHL draft, so I figured I could make an article out of it. It started out as a "Ooo I wonder who I'll be playing with if I go to San Fran" ended up being a bit of a hit piece on my potential new team

San Francisco Draft Recap S38-42

The San Francisco Pride have been apart of the SHL for six regular seasons, one playoff run appearance and five SHL entry draft. They are poised to have their biggest draft to date with twelve picks in the first five rounds of a very deep draft. We pause here to look back at the teams first five drafts which have lead them up to this point. Their record over these six seasons....

Past Record
S37 - 16 wins, 36 points, 14th in the SHL
S38 - 35 wins, 74 points, 1st in the SHL
S39 - 25 wins, 53 points, 10th in the SHL
S40 - 21 wins, 48 points, 10th in the SHL
S41 - 14 wins, 33 points, 14th in the SHL
S42 - 20 wins, 44 points, 13th in the SHL

S38 SHL Entry Draft

After finishing last in S37 the Pride entered the S38 entry draft with out their own 1st round pick which ended up 2nd OA after the lottery. They were also missing their 2nd and 3rd round picks.

1st - 14th OA -Sigurd Hansen 355 TPE
2nd - 19th OA - Kyler Gill 614 TPE
3rd - 34th OA - Marietta McCafferty 203 TPE
3rd - 36th OA - JR Richie 222 TPE
3rd - 42nd OA - Oliver Hunter 261 TPE
4th - 43rd OA - Miro Jokinen 192 TPE

Sigurd Hansen had a great junior career with the Kelowna Knights. Sigurd showed promise but the shut down defencemen couldn't put it together to get to the next level with real success. After winning two four star cups he moved on to playing for the Rage. He currently is a depth defencemen for the last place club.

Kyler Gill was a solid pick in the second round. Kyler is still a member of the pride and has become a dependable offensive depth forward for the club. The club used their first of the three third rounds on the Aussie goalie Mariettea McCafferty. Mariette was a dependable junior goalie, but never made it to the big show and has since retired. The next pick wasn't any better, JR Richie is a free agent currently looking for a depth job, he will likely need to go over sees to continue his career. Left winger Oliver Hunter had a respectable junior career but like two before him he couldn't put it together to make it to the SHL. Lastly, not much is expected from a 4th rounder, but Miro Jokinen also falmed out.

Results: 1 active 614 TPE, 5 inactives

S39 SHL Entry Draft

San Fran also spent most of this draft with out many picks. Their 1st was again with Toronto, their 2nd was with Calgary and there third and fourth picks were also gone.

3rd - 34th OA - Chris Partridge 669 TPE
4th - 55th OA - Hans Gruber 235 TPE
5th - 66th OA - Niklas Mueller 155? TPE

The Pride had a lot of time to think about their first pick at 34th OA and they made an excellent pick, drafting their current starting goalie Chris Partridge. Chris has been a steady presence on the blue line and looks like he'll be the teams starting goalie for the forseeable future. Don't have a lot of picks, you got to make them count. Gruber was a solid player for the Raiders who continued to play a supporting role until this year where he was cut from the team and Niklas Mueller, well... we have no trace of him. We wish him and his family the best.

Results: 1 active 669 TPE, 2 inactives

S40 SHL Entry Draft

This was the first season the Pride had to forgeit their 1st round pick from the Portland scandal. The team did have many second round picks, which amounted to...

2nd - 24th OA - Rainier Cartwright-Davis 173 TPE
2nd - 25th OA - Jackson Conklin 227 TPE
2nd - 26th OA - Daniel Garland 232 TPE

With back to back to back picks the pride were looking to start to fill up the cupboards. Rainier never really had success at any level, not being a stand out player in the SMJHL and as a result never making the SHL. Rainier is currently an SMJHL free agent looking for a team. Good be a solid depth signing on an SMJHL club. Jackson Conklin has become a solid player for the Armada, a solid middle six forward which has helpted the team make the playoffs this year, but again another player who won't be seeing any SHL minutes. Which leaves us with Daniel Garland, who is surpisingly an SMJHL free agent despite being a junior player of at least equal or greater calibre than the other two Pride draftees. Hopefully Garland can sign a contract this next season in his last year of junior elgibility.

Results: 3 inactives

S41 SHL Entry Draft

The Pride had to forfeit their 1st round pick, they traded their 2nd to Manhattan, and their 3rd to Toronto. Which results in San Fran drafting no players in what was a very weak draft anyways.

Results: Nothing

S42 SHL Entry Draft

Which brings us to last seasons draft. The Pride finished last in what was set to be a very solid draft class. Unfortunately the Pride had traded their first round pick to New England. New England went ahead and drafted super start Rafe Ulrich with the first overall pick while the pride sat and watched till the 26th pick to make their first selection.

2nd - 26th OA -  Karl Von Wittelsbach 243 TPE
3rd - 42nd OA - Charlie Shieck 431 TPE

With their 2nd round pick the Pride took a promising young defender in Karl Von Wittelsbach. Unfortunately Karl's development fell of a cliff. The once rising star fell off completely and looks like he'll be a career SMJHL player. None the less he's been solid for the Armada. With the third round pick the Pride took Charlie Schieck, which is finnally a home run pick! (I know it's Grapes guy and was auto drafted but still...) Schieck has been a stud for the Militia being their clear number one defender, practically since he arrived. Schieck will make the jump soon and be an elite player for the Pride.

Results: 1 active 431 TPE, 1 inactive.

Overall recap of the Prides draft history:
- 5 SHL Drafts
- 14 selections
- 3 actives, S42 431 TPE, S39 669, S38 614
- 11 inactives

The Pride will be making twelve picks this draft coming draft alone including the 1st, 3rd and 5th OA picks. The Pride have empty cupboards currently and holes to fill everywhere, but they've picked a hell of a draft to potentially turn it around. This draft is as deep as any in SHL history and the Pride have three early picks and a bunch of late ones thanks to some savy trading from GM Grapehead.

1st - 2nd OA - San Fran
1st - 3rd OA - Seattle
1st - 5th OA - Minnesota
2nd - 25-28th OA - Hamilton
3rd - 31th OA - Seattle
3rd - 33th OA - Minnesota
3rd - 35th OA - Los Angeles
3rd - 38th OA - West Kendall
3rd - (39-41)th OA - New England
4th - 44th OA - San Fran
5th - 56th OA - San Fran

Here's hoping to a brighter drafting future for the Pride, we wish them the best of luck in the S43 entry draft!

It's embarrassing that this is my SHL draft record! Enjoyed the write up king, but hopefully when we do this again in 5 seasons it'll be all homerun picks

and bukss but that was the Admirals technically. Rebrand came after that draft. That draft would've actually made this article worse tbh
