Throwing Weight Around - Hits Per 60 in S44

(This post was last modified: 12-18-2018, 06:03 PM by Thelastheraclid.)

I'm a simple man. I see a puck-carrier, I throw a check. All these new fangled advanced stats ignore the physical part of the game so I went through the season 44 data and calculated the hits/60 of everyone in the league. This had some interesting results.

First off here is the top 10 for hits in season 44:

1 Dank Boija (DET) 141
2 Boris Denisovich (MTL) 113
3 Vladimir Vaskov (DET) 111
4 Jean-Pierre Gay (COL) 107
5 Pierre Laroche-Durocher (HAL) 103
6 Daniel Daniil (MTL) 101
7 Jeffery Murphy (KEL) 101
8 Poopity Scoop (DET) 95
9 Benois Minuscule (VAN) 94
10 Shaquille Derisraka (VAN) 91

To calculate hits/60 I took each player's (hits/minutes played)*60. This definitely shook up the top 10 rankings. From the previous list only four remained. Let's check it out:

1 Tim Murda (COL) 14.09 hits/60
2 Vladimir Vaskov (DET) 8.33 hits/60
3 Dank Boija (DET) 8.32 hits/60
4 Rainbow Dash (HAL) 8.1 hits/60
5 Nat Emerson (DET) 7.98 hits/60
6 David Kastrba (VAN) 7.93 hits/60
7 Lillie Jacobs (COL) 7.58 hits/60
8 Jeffrey Murphy (KEL) 7.56 hits/60
9 Takehiko Yukimura (ANC) 7.39 hits/60
10 Poopity Scoop (DET) 7.16 hits/60

Tim Murda is living up to his name with an insane 14.09 hits thrown per 60. Keep in mind he only played 183 minutes. With more minutes played that number will definitely come down. Looking at this list you can see that playing against Detroit is going to be a painful experience seeing that they have 4 of the top 10 in hits/60.

Teams ranked by average player hits/60 looks like this

Colorado Raptors 3.87
Detroit Falcons 3.73
Montreal Militia 3.45
Anchorage Armada 3.41
Halifax Raiders 3.26
Vancouver Whalers 3.23
St. Louis Scarecrows 3.16
Kelowna Knights 2.5

What does this teach us? Nothing really. Hits/60 doesn't seem to have much of a correlation with the regular season standings besides Kelowna being last in both regards. Maybe if Kelowna could grab a couple more physical players they might secure a few more wins next season.
