Let the Countdown Begin....

Esa Anrikkanen looks up the ice and towards a historic SHL milestone...

Esa Anrikkanen sits at 495 goals through the first 11 games of the S45 season, his 28th year playing for the Calgary Dragons. Yes he’s old as fuck, but coming off a 20 goal, 37 point pre-season and with 6 goals, 10 points in 11 games so far in this regular season, the Parm King continues to defy the laws of age and physics.

By now his balls should be dragging on the ice slowing him down, but his game is actually picking up. Currently on pace for a 20+ goal, 40+ point season, we’re watching one of the greatest players in SHL history continue to do what he loves every time he steps on the ice. Score goals and help the Dragons win games.

Last year we saw a historic race to 1000 points between Esa Anrikkanen and Kristian Eriksson, the league watched as Eriksson broke the mark first, followed be Esa the next day. The only two players in our 45 year history to reach this amazing milestone, which more than likely will never be done again. It was remarkable.

500 goals is possibly an even more remarkable achievement, if and when it happens...

Currently there are only 3 players in history with over 400 SHL goals. Esa with 495, Eriksson with 489 and Theo Kane with 435. The next closest person is the great David Winter at 394 and then about a dozen with over 300. Esa about to break 500 goals is truly amazing and testament to his consistent scoring prowess and trail blazing legacy.

There’s no doubt his career is winding down and we will see the end very soon, but not before we get to celebrate another first for a player who’s been setting the bar for nearly 3 decades. He was the first player in history to hit 2,000 tpe, the first to score 400 goals, he's won an astounding 5 cups, was the player to break Joe McKeil's 926 point record, then one of the first two players to break 1000 points, and now will soon become the first player ever to score 500 goals.

Whether you’re a fan of Esa’s career or not, his longevity, his ability to fight regression, or a fan of the Dragons, any way you look at it, we’re watching SHL history and it’s something to be excited about.

Esa’s always been a classy player who’s tried to gain respect of his teammates, fans and league members with how he’s carried himself in the SHL throughout his career. This is definitely a story people can get behind and he's a player to root for.

With 39 games remaining, Esa needs 5 goals to reach 500, with any luck he’ll get there, if not and he ends up at 499 then this article is to blame.

We’ll be tracking this milestone and story as it develops. At this point every goal Esa scores is historic....

Esa's fans can barely contain themselves as he scores goal # 495!

Calgary will be traveling with a special 5 foot chicken parm sandwich to wheel out on the ice when Esa’s scores #500.

Goal #496 came in a Win against division rival Los Angeles Panthers when Esa scored late in the 2nd period to tie the game back up at 3-3, a big powerplay goal that ignited the Dragons for a 2 goal 3rd period and a victory!

Esa opened the scoring against another divisional opponent in Texas. Goal #497 came on a powerplay howitzer from the point early in the 1st period to put the Dragons up 1-0 in what would be his first of 2 goals in the victory!

Goal #498 would come in the same game, a big 5-2 win against Texas when Esa unleased a twisted wrister in the 2nd period to put the Dragons up 4-1 and help put the game out of reach.

Goal #499 came in a close game against San Francisco when Esa sniped one in the 2nd period to make it a bring the Dragons within 1 goal 3-2, but they would eventually lose this game 4-3. A tough loss but only 1 more goal to go for the iconic #500!!!

NUMBER 500!!! Ahh

With his 11th goal of the season, Esa Anrikkanen has made history by becoming the only player to ever score 500 goals!!! Esa ripped one past Beajeaux Biscuit for the historic marker that cut the game to 4-3 late in the 3rd period, but the Dragons were not able to pull out the victory to make it a perfect scenario.

The 5 foot chicken parm (which had been frozen for the past 34 games) was wheeled out on the ice after the goal and there was a long stoppage in play as Esa skated around the ice with the parm in his arms, he threw chunks of it to the fans, even though he was not on home ice everyone appreciated the gesture and being part of history. Esa ate a good portion of it then shared the rest with his Dragons teammates. He also gave a piece to his long time teammates now on West Kendall Roman Augustus and Dani Forsberg. It was kind of special to have them in the arena for the 500th goal. It was probably not as special that Beaujeaux Biscuit will now be forever in history for allowing this goal, so Esa kindly gave Bojo the last piece of his parm.

It was a historic night, everyone was a part of history and a milestone we may never see again.

After the game we caught up with Esa for his comments...

"You know, I've gotta admit this is a truly special night for me... I've been playing in this league a long time, some would say too long, but I just love the game and putting on the Dragons jersey year after year. It makes me feel young. I know I have to hang it up soon, but achieving another league first is really something that means a lot to me. I never imagined I'd score 500 goals. It's kind of astounding to think about to be honest, but it's a very cool honor to achieve as the end of my career is on the horizon. There's really not much more I want to accomplish so this may be the last cool thing I do in my career. It's been a great run, I'm honored to score my 500th goal and represent the Dragons and the SHL. Thanks to everyone who's been a part of this, I appreciate you all more than you know."
