Aaron Wilson was just selected 37th overall by the Vancouver Whalers. First of all, congratulations on getting drafted. What does it feel like to be a part of the Whalers? It feels amazing. Everyone in the organization has been very welcoming and I think this is a great team to play for. There are a lot of banners in the rafters here and hopefully, I can help bring another one this year. We have a great group of guys and I have no doubt that we can win the cup this season. Can you describe your game a bit? What are your strengths? Things you want to work on? I try to play a responsible 200-foot game. I win a lot of face offs usually and I have a pretty good wrist shot. I feel like power play is where I really shine and I can kill penalties too. My 5v5 scoring is not where I’d like it to be yet, and I’ll be working every day to improve my skating and playmaking skills. Can you evaluate your performance at the SMJHL showcase? Um… Well, it definitely didn’t go as I had hoped. We struggled as a team and I’m partly to blame. This was my first experience playing at this level and I didn’t play well at all. I think I was like -5 in 20 games and our line didn’t generate nearly enough offense. So yeah, it was disappointing but it helped me identify weaknesses in my game. Hopefully, I’ll do better at the SHL showcase in the future. Speaking of which, how amazing would it be to get drafted into the SHL? Oh man, I can’t even imagine how that would feel. Every hockey player around the world dreams about playing in the SHL, and I sure hope I’ll be able to make a name for myself in this league. You were selected 37th overall. Is that later than you expected? I mean, there is no doubt this draft class is loaded with talented players but I definitely felt like I should’ve been selected earlier. But at the end of the day, it doesn’t really matter where you get drafted as long as you get drafted. I’ve been under the radar my whole life and I’m eager to prove that the 9 GMs who passed on me made a mistake. How long do you plan to stay in juniors? A couple of seasons, probably. What kind of role do you see yourself playing as a rookie this year? To be honest, I really have no idea. I know what I can bring to the table but I’m ready to do anything I can to help the team win. You must be getting a lot of text messages from your friends and family. What’s the most inspirational message you have received so far? I’m going to draft you in my fantasy league, don’t (expletive) suck. Ok, thanks for the interview and good luck. Thanks, can't wait for the season to start.
