Randolph Reporter here reporting from the S46 SMJHL draft. I've had the chance to sit down with Lethbridge's newest rookie, drafted 41st overall, Harry Carpet from Finland.
RR:
Harry, first of all congratulations. Please take us through your past 24 hours.
HC: It all happened really fast. I'm just catching up on everything and trying to get it into my head. I was both excited and nervous to play game 3 of the finals vs the Blazers. I'm a very competitive person and I wanted to win this tournament from the moment our rosters were announced. We've had a great group on the Vipers and I'm not too happy how the final game went. Maybe I didn't have enough coffee, maybe there were other reasons, it just didn't end the way we wanted. It was an amazing tournament though. I've met a lot of friendly people and great players and whoever drafted the other Vipers will have great guys on their team. Then we all had to head over to the draft...which had already begun before our game had ended. Whoever came up with that idea.
RR:
Can you describe how the draft went from your perspective?
HC: Honestly, I didn't know what to expect. I had only been talking to a couple of GMs prior to the draft. So I knew which teams were interested in me. Ironically, I was drafted by a team I didn't even have on my radar. I was getting nervous after 4 rounds had gone by and nobody had picked me yet. However, I'm honored to be a member of the Lions now.

What did you know about the Lethbridge Lions before the draft?
HC: Not very much, actually. I didn't even know where Lethbridge was on the map, haha. I'm not even sure now, but I'll find out soon enough. My first thought was how awesome it is to play for a team named 'Lions'. You know the nickname for the Finnish national team is 'Leijonat' which means Lions. Perhaps I really was meant to go here. It's also cool to be on a team only going into its second season. You're essentially still part of the beginning and can help to shape everything. I'm really excited.

Has your new team already reached out to you?
HC: The GM briefly met with me and welcomed me to the team. My new captain has also introduced himself already and answered a few questions. I'm looking forward to meeting the rest of the guys. I already know some of the other rookies from the tournament and I'm happy to have one of the best defensemen like Thomas Bathory and one of the top goal scorers Austin Roenick on my team now. Both Borůvka Banananák and Jules L'Éclair were also outstanding in the tournament, even though I'm not too happy about losing to them in the final.

Let's quickly recap the SMJHL Showcase Tournament again and talk about the Vipers. Your team seemed to have bonded rather quickly.
HC: Sometimes it's weird how these things just happen. I arrived there not knowing anything or anyone, but the Vipers were one of the greatest random bunch of people I've been part of. It feels like I've known them forever, we were like a family for a short time. And then there were these other things that I'd rather not talk about. It's almost a bit depressing to know that I'll have to play against them now. We all plan to stay in touch though.

Is there anything you'd like people to know about you?
HC: Let's see. I'm a winner. I run on coffee, so don't even try to talk to me before I've had any caffeine - I don't like talking about myself much.
