Earlier this morning, the Vancouver Whalers named their captain for the current season. Coincidentally, today is also day 38 of the season, meaning it is time to update everyone on how the Whalers have faired so far this season.
The Whalers currently have an unbelievable 10 rookies in their lineup this season. And these rookies have contributed greatly to their season so far. However, first we must pay our dues to the team vets. The Whalers are lead in scoring by high flying forward Borromini Cannellini, who has amassed a team 26 points through 22 games. He is an even contributed, with 13 goals as well as assists. He currently leads the SMJHL in goals, 2 clear of second place, as well as shots. Right behind him is linemate Petr Mikulak. Petr has 11 goals and 12 assists through 22 games, good for second on the team with 23 points. Pter is 4th in the league with an astounding 18.97 shot percent. On defence, the Whalers top pair has also been contributing in bunches to the score sheet. Top defensemen Egor Kucherov and Bernik Vzarla have 15 and 10 points respectably. They are one of the huge reasons that the Whalers are currently in the playoff hunt. Between the pipes for Vancouver is none other than Casimir Stevens. He is currently 5th best in the league with a 0.899 save percentage through 17 games played. Back up Eddy Ask. Jr has functioned very well in relief of Stevens, posting his own respectable save percentage of 0.867. The Whalers have a wealth of talent outside of these few standouts though. Carlo Russo, William Goose, Andy Kerr, Tauras Karazjia, Jeremy Chan, AJ Robertson and Rudy Mentz have all contributed this season. Russo is fifth on the team with 11 points. Goose and Kerr are not far behind, with 10 and 9 points respectably. Karazja, and Chan have been very steady on the second pairing, giving GM luktd confidence in his depth on defence. Robertson and Mentz have also contributed valuable minutes to the squad. All of the depth talked about above has led to the Whalers being able to ease their large rookie class into the lineup. Cullen Gray has been a breakout star, and seems like a lock to win rookie of the year for Vancouver. 12 points is good for 4th on the team, and 3rd in rookie scoring. Jax Duggan has become a staple on the defence, posting a positive plus-minus, while Aaron Wilson has contributed heavy minutes to the squad. Sammy Raanta andTheo Morgan have contributed with 4 and 3 points each, while Joe Ackryod and Ghengis Con have a +/- of 6 and 4 respectably. Both Aleister Crowley, Dale Miller, and Igor Volkov have all also contributed greatly to the team. GM Luktd deserves a lot of credit for building this team with an eye for now, as well as the future. This Vancouver Whalers team has a good mix of youngsters and Wiley old vets. Look for the Whalers to make a run not only this season, but for the foreseeable future as well.
