S47 Top 3 TPE by Position Scouting Report
#1

LarksTongue's seasonal TPE draft guide: S47 Top 3 TPE by Position (2795 Words) (x2 Draft related Research)

Here is a breakdown of the top 3 earners for each position. Different than last season as I am too lazy to write for all SMJHL teams again. I’ll try to keep the format the same and discuss both season and playoff performance. Keep it more in the sense of a scouting report on the players. Hope it helps some of your mock drafts.

*Position is designated by chosen position when player was created. TPE data taken from luketd’s tracking spreadsheet*

Centers:

Marc Hagan - Montreal Militia  Militia  - 277 TPE

Top earner among S47 centers; Marc Hagan hails from the USA. Marc Hagan played 3rd line center for the Montreal Militia averaging 16.5 minutes a game with regular power play duty. Hagan came 8th in rookie scoring, coming out with 7 goals and 13 assists good for 20 points and a respectable -2. Hagan ended the season with a 0.48 P/20. Hagan saw his playtime increase in the playoffs when the Militia made a surprise run going up to 20 minutes a game as the Militia traded away players at the deadline. Hagan put up 7 points in 12 playoff games, 4 of them being goals. Ironically enough this tied him for 1st among rookies in the playoffs with Filip Zadina and Esa Parmberg both which played more games. Hagan’s only part of his game that didn’t show up on the score sheet was faceoffs like many young centers.

Hagan is a 6 foot 3, 204 pound two way forward with strengths in Scoring, Defense, Skating, and a weakness in checking. As reliable as a pick as there is as @CampinKiller has previous player experience, simmed the SMJHL last season, active in the Montreal LR with advice, and has the player to compliment I see him going top 5.

Espen Knutsen Jr. - Detroit Falcons  Falcons  - 275 TPE

Only 2 points behind Hagan is the Norwegian born; Espen Knutsen Jr. Despite being listed as a center on luketd’s mega spreadsheet, Knutsen Jr. played 2nd line right wing on an offensive role with heavy power play time. Don’t let that detract from Knutsen Jr.’s stock as a center, as he still has points put into faceoff. Although listed on the 2nd line, Kuntsen Jr. only averaged 14 minutes a game. Despite this, Knutsen Jr. finished one point ahead of Marc Hagan with 21 points. 4 of them being goals. This ties him for 6th in rookie scoring with Martijn Westbroek. Knutsen Jr. finished the season with a 0.60 P/20. Like many rookies Knutsen Jr. saw his ice time go up to 16 minutes a game in the playoffs. Knutsen Jr. was the story of the Falcons scoring 5 goals in 9 games with 3 of them being game winners. And one of them was a game tying goal as well. Just plain clutch. That put him 5th in rookie scoring during the playoffs. He led all rookies in goals in the playoffs.

Knutsen Jr. is 6 foot, 180 pound playmaking forward with strengths in; Passing, Skating, and Defense. Checking is his chosen weakness. In contrast to CampinKiller; @Randominoe is a relatively new user from Feb. He just dished out a big x2 article for $$$ and has quite a lot of rep. Sort of quietly consistent. I see Knutsen Jr. as an easy first rounder.

Sami Raanta - Vancouver Whalers Whalers - 274 TPE

It was close this year for centers among the top 7 TPE earners. Only 10 points separate 1st from 7th. Only one point behind Knutsen Jr., and one point ahead of Esa Parmborg is the Finnish born Sami Raanta at 274 TPE. Like Knutsen Jr., Raanta played 2nd line right wing for the Vancouver Whalers playing with fellow rookie Theo Morgan. Raanta played 14.6 minutes a game with light power play duty. Raanta did not perform as outstanding as his peers in the top 3. Raanta grabbed 11 points and 3 goals and took a -11. 1 of those goals was a game winner. Despite the lack of production Raanta was disciplined and took only 6 penalty minutes. Raanta isn’t scared to take a shot and finished the season with 71. During the Whalers 5 playoff games Raanta got 15.5 minutes a game, got 2 assists and took 13 shots. He also dropped the mitts once and won.

Raanta is a 6 foot 3, 220 pound playmaking forward with strengths in Passing, Skating, and Puck Handling. His chosen weakness is checking. Despite the poor season for Sami Raanta, @Sami has been very active in the media department and has contributed the very interesting TPEI%. He is also one of the GMs for S46 WJC Schwösterland team, who are looking tough to beat. This likely has risen Sami Raanta’s stock considerably and will be drafted high.

Defense:

Charlie Serpe - St. Louis Scarecrows Scarecrows - 280 TPE

First among defensemen is the left handed, American born Charlie Serpe. Serpe played 3rd pairing for the St Louis Scarecrows playing 19 minutes a game, and regular special teams. Serpe had a great season with 20 points and 1 goal. That point total ties him with Marc Hagan for 8th among rookies. And 2nd among rookie defenseman. A power play specialist he dished 9 power play assists. Sound defensively with an even +/- and 40 blocked shots. Serpe went 49 games without a goal in the season which I thought was pretty unlucky. Serpe’s production dipped in the playoffs and he got 4 points and one goal in the St. Louis 19 game cup run. However he led all defensemen on the Scarecrows in +/- and blocked shots with a +3 and 33 respectively.

Serpe is a 5 foot 11, 185 pound offensive defensemen with strengths in Passing, Puck Handling, and Defense. Like most Serpe chose checking as his weakness. Serpe is another high end pick that has it all. @Serpe x 13 is an older user who I believe just came back. I can see Serpe being drafted very high with all that previous experience and a cup winning player to boot. Possible 1st overall.

Jax Duggan - Vancouver Whalers Whalers - 275 TPE

Tied with Corey Kennedy at 275 TPE is the canadian born Jax Duggan, who shoots right. Duggan played top pairing minutes averaging almost 21 minutes a game. Duggan rises above Kennedy on the simple metric that he scored more points. Duggan grabbed 22 points and 4 goals. He led all defensmen on the Whalers and all rookie defensmen in the league. That is good for 5th among all rookies. Always involved Duggan also took 66 penalty minutes tied for 6th in the league. Good on both ends of the ice with a +4 and 40 blocked shots and 80 hits. Duggan does it all. In contrast to Serpe, Duggan played 5 playoff games and kept up his  involved play with 2 points, tied for team lead +1, team leading 7 blocked shots while playing 21 minutes played a game.

Duggan is a 6 foot 4, 250 pound offensive defenseman with strengths in Puck Handling, Passing, and Defense. Unlike everyone else he elected to choose strength as a weakness. Duggan has used his strength change. @SecondSucks22 is a newer user but that hasn’t held him back from being active. A consistent media contributor and a vocal guy in the LR getting him an assistant nod for Team Canada at the WJC. Another high pick. I kinda see 1st overall between Duggan and Serpe.

Corey Kennedy - Anaheim Outlaws Outlaws - 275 TPE

With a few less points than Duggan is the Irish born Corey Kennedy. An honourable mention goes out to Tony Ford who is only 2 points behind Kennedy. A natural right defenseman, Kennedy played 2nd pairing for the Outlaws averaging 18.5 minutes a game. Kennedy played on the power play and got 7 of his points on the power play. Kennedy grabbed 16 points in total and 6 goals. Which I believe puts him 3rd among rookie defenseman..A shoot first minded defenseman unlike Duggan and Serpe, Kennedy had 60 shots good for 2nd among Outlaw defensemen. Kennedy also blocked a respectable 37 shots. The Outlaws had a short playoff with just 5 games but Kennedy managed 2 goals and 4 blocked shots.

Corey Kennedy is a 6 foot 4, 205 pound offensive defenseman with strengths in Scoring, Skating, and Puck Handling. And a weakness in checking. @SDCore is another new user who has contributed regularly to the SMJHL media. He also did Game 5 PbP for the Four Star Cup Final. So many great defenseman picks here however Kennedy is a shoot first defenseman. SHL Team needs might affect his position.

Left Wingers:

Cullen Gray - Vancouver Whalers Whalers - 279 TPE

First among left wingers is the canadian born Cullen Gray. Gray had an outstanding season and is the likely pick for rookie of the year in the SMJHL. Gray led all rookies with 35 points and 13 goals. That point total puts him 3rd among left wingers. Gray played first line right wing with the also likely SMJHL MVP; Borromini Cannellini. Gray averaged around 17 minutes a game with heavy power play duty. Gray did it all going +12, blockied 10 shots, taking 127 shots, 5 1st stars, 2 game winners, and 3 game tying goals. During the Whalers short playoff run Gray got a goal and an assist, and went +1. Not much more needs to be said.

Gray is a 6 foot, 192 pound sniper with strengths in Scoring, Puck Handling, and Skating choosing checking as his weakness.@Gray is another user that started in February. Unlike other active media members, Gray decided to do graphics which he is very active in and is currently a media grader. With that in mind and with Gray’s outstanding season performance anyone looking for a future 1st line sniper will quickly think of drafting Cullen Gray.

Eko van Otter - Anchorage Armada Armada - 274 TPE

Only 5 points behind Gray is the Norwegian born Eko van Otter. Van Otter played great during the season with 3rd line left winger duty. Van Otter did not play much on the special teams. Due to this he played a little less than 15 minutes a game. Van Otter grabbed an amicable 15 points with 6 goals and a +4. Van Otter led all Armada rookies in points and was pretty clutch with 3 game winners and 1 game tying goal during the season. Van Otter isn’t scared of contact as he had 48 hits putting him 4th on the Armada. Van Otter struggled during the Armada playoff run and only got 2 points in 11 games. Unlike many other rookies he saw his ice time go down in the playoffs to almost 13 minutes a game.

Van Otter is a 5 foot 11, 183 pound playmaking forward with strengths in Passing, Skating, Defense and a weakness in checking. Van Otter has used his free strength change. Another new user since February; @bwrabbitt has been an active member of the media and has touched his hand in graphics. The Smoke Show Article gave me a good laugh when I first read it and he even pumped out a new draft day article. Van Otter could easily be drafted top 10 for teams looking for playmaking ability on the wing.

Joseph Laraque - Halifax Raiders raiders - 267 TPE

Third among left wingers is the USA born Joseph Laraque. Laraque had a great season production wise and finished the season with 29 points and 16 goals! That goal total likely puts him first among rookie goal scorers. In the end Laraque came 3rd in rookie scoring and 9th best left winger in the league. Laraque picked corners all season and came 1st league wide with a 19.75 shooting percentage. In fact Laraque led his team in P/20 with 0.73. Possibly a sleeper pick for rookie of the year as he also grabbed 3 first star nods. Laraque played 3rd line left wing and averaged about 16 minutes a game and regular power play time. During the Halifax playoff run Laraque’s ice time went up to almost 20 minutes a game grabbing 6 points and 4 goals in 11 games. Laraque maintained his high shooting percentage with a 18.18%.

Laraque is a 5 foot 11, 187 pound sniper with strengths in Scoring, Puck Handling, and defense. Choosing checking as his weakness. @blix900 is a returning user from 2012 who is committed to Joseph Laraque. blix900 has a presence in the media department and tried graphics too. Lots of great picks among left wingers making it tough for GM’s to choose.

Right Wingers:

Filip Zadina - St. Louis Scarecrows Scarecrows - 305 TPE

Leading all S47 SHL draftees in TPE is the Czech born; Filip Zadina. Zadina played 3rd line left wing for the Scarecrows and did not play on any special teams. He ended the season with only 11.5 minutes a game. Despite this, Zadina makes the most of his ice time as he came out with 14 points and 7 goals giving him a P/20 of 0.49. This places him 2nd among Scarecrow rookies in scoring. Only behind fellow high end rookie Charlie Serpe. During the Scarecrow cup run, Zadina played around 13 minutes a game, and nabbed 7 points and 4 goals in 19 games. Zadina still was not given any power play time. He led all scarecrow rookies in the playoffs with points. Zadina tied with Marc Hagan for 1st among rookie scorers in the playoffs. Zadina also was tied for 6th in shots taken during the playoffs with 44.

Zadina is a 6 foot, 196 pound sniper with strengths in Scoring, Skating, and Defense. Like almost all players he choose a weakness in checking. @jjlangabeer is another returning user from 2012 who is looking to get back into SHL after retiring John Langabeer. Because of this he is loaded with money and will have no issue developing further despite no media contribution recently. A top 5 pick.

Gunnar Söderberg - Kelowna Knights Knights - 286 TPE

After Zadina is the Swedish born Gunnar Söderberg. Söderberg played 4th line for the offensive Knights giving him only 9 minutes of ice time a game, and no special teams. He only had 5 minutes of power play time and got a point out of it. The 9 minutes didn’t stop him as he still got 10 points and 3 goals leading all Knight rookies in points and finished with a 0.44 P/20. Söderberg’s usage in the playoffs was the same and he came out with just 3 goals in the Knights deep playoff run. 2 of those goals were game tying goals. With such limited ice time it’s hard to judge Söderberg on his season production but he still performed well with that limited ice time which likely allowed the Knights to capture the regular season trophy.

Söderberg is a 5 foot 11, 195 pound playmaking forward with strengths in Passing, Skating and Puck Handling. Checking is the chosen weakness. @sköldpaddor has been a user since late January. He has a regular media called “Making the Play”, makes signatures for fun, and contributes graphics normally giving him a great rep. I wonder how Söderberg would have done with a bit more play time. A possible sleeper pick as his SHL activity is above and beyond to me.

Austin Roenick - Lethbridge Lions Lions  - 279 TPE

Last to go on my draft review is the Irish born Austin Roenick. Roenick was critical to the Lions team playing 2nd line right wing and getting 19 minutes a game with regular special teams duty. Because of this Roenick came 2nd behind Cullen Gray in rookie scoring, with 30 points and 14 goals. A dominant player going +10 and taking 107 shots thru the season. Roenick also grabbed 4 game winning goals and 1 game tying goal. He also nabbed 1st star nods twice. In the end he had a very impressive P/20 of 0.63. Lions were one of the lower scoring teams and with his production might push him into Rookie of the Year talks. The Lions had a short playoff run with just 5 games and Roenick did not register a point despite the same amount of time on ice.

Roenick is a 6 foot 1, 210 pound sniper with strengths in Scoring, Puck Handling, and Defense. Like most his weakness is Checking. @XLeafer is an older user and well liked by the community it seems. He is starting a new player as a recreate after retiring RW Leafer Rielly who had quite the career. No doubt his bank is loaded so no worries for development for him. The definition of a safe pick for any team.

*Omitted goalies as there are only 3 goalies available.*
