For the upcoming Season 48 SMJHL entry draft we got the chance to talk to Swedish born Alexander Thorstrom. From this interview we hope to get to know the person behind the player and hope we can get some information out of him what he hopes his future will look like.
Q: What are your expectations for the upcoming draft? A: I’m really not sure what to expect. I just recently hired an agent to get a better feel for how the league views me. I know this is the springboard to my career. I know that whoever drafts me is going to be getting the best goalie in this draft. Q: Do you have a preference for any of the teams and why? A: I don’t, I truly have a lot of familiarity with the league. I’m looking forward to learning more about each team. The SMJHL has steadily grown over the year. I don’t have any specific preference but I would like to go to a place that wants to play me. Q: What are your goals for the upcoming season? A: To give myself time to adjust and continue to work on my game. It’s going to be the best competition I have played yet when I enter the SMJHL. I want to help instil a positive mindset to the club, to show them what it takes to improve at this level by action. I’m excited for the challenge. Q: What kind of goaltender are you? A: Well, I am a huge fan of routine when it comes to my preparation. I focus on doing the little things each day in practice, each week I have set goals to work on my fundamentals. Of course I have a long way to go to become the goalie I want to be. That goalie is someone who is consistent and aggressive on the shot. I want to always limit my second chances, I want my team to know if the shot comes I can not just block it but can control it. Q: What will you bring to the team that drafts you? A: Someone who is going to put in the work to consistently improve. I will bring a drive to whichever team I go to. My competitiveness is high and if you’re on the ice with me you know I want to beat you. That same mentality is how I approach a lot of things in life. Once I’m drafted to a team, my goal is to help that team by becoming the best player I can be and an example to my peers. ’m a very competitive person and I utilize my challenges and setbacks as a way to always keep me motivated. Q: Can you tell us a little more about where you grew up and how you got to the SMJHL? A: I grew up in Stockholm with my family; it was my mother and 2 brothers. My oldest brother Christian made a name for himself in the European League for the Stockholm Stampede. He played defense, I played goalie and our youngest brother was the forward. I guess we kind of covered it all as a family. My brother Christian dreamed of making the SHL. Q: What is your favorite NHL team and why? A: Sabres & Red Wings. Loved the goalie ![]() Q: Who is your goaltending idol and why? A: In the NHL? Dominik Hasek and Henrik Lundqvist - For Dom its a matter of being the greatest of all time. His style, his consistency, his ability to make these WOW-type saves. I feel like he did a lot for his teams in the way he played, he was a one man show at times. Lundqvist because, like myself, he is Swedish. He has proven for over a decade he is one of the best at his craft. It is incredible to see and learn his preparation. I was able to meet him one time on a trip to NYC with my brother and former SHL goalie Ryan Jesster. Q: Is there any reason why you play with number 39? A: Dominik Hasek, he is my inspiration. I hope to emulate his kind of success in the SHL one day. That is my long term goal, but I know there is a long path ahead of me. I always liked the Europeans who were able to dominant in North American hockey. Q: Do you have any pre game rituals? A: Honestly I don’t. I know a lot of times, goalies especially, get pegged as being superstitious to the extreme. I’ve been known to stick to my routine but its not because of some negative experience will happen if I don’t, it just works for me. It keeps me grounded in my day, regardless of the emotion of the game to come. Q: What is your favourite meal? A: Lasagna. Although I am trying to eat a bit less meat these days so I would substitute any meat sauce.
