Draft Prospect view

With the Regular season quickly approaching we turn our attention to the SMJHL entry draft. With the draft now close to 5 rounds deep, we take a look at a few players and where they may end up filling some team needs. Here they are in no particular order.

1- Centerman Gordon Bombays an American playmaking centre. Excelling at Passing, Puck Handling and Face-offs, Bombay is sure to be a sought after Centerman. That being said, he has a solid knack of scoring. While his defence and skating need work, these are able to be worked on. The real thing that needs to be worked on is Strength. While winning draws is a solid attribute, getting knocked off the puck easily will be a problem. A little bit of time in the gym will be necessary.

All teams in this league would love to have Depth at the centre position, While most are solid in the Centre position, Colorado or Detroit may benefit from having a solid Centerman like Bombay. Possibly a high 2nd rounder, we don’t expect him to on the board too deep into the draft.

2- Goalie Biz Nasty is a German butterfly goalie with great Rebound control and solid style control and hand speed. Skating is a definite weakness but overall he is solid goalie with a ton of potential. Solid agility and a good size, this 6 foot 7 inch prospect will be a definite A+ prospect to any team in the league. Puck handling is not the best but it is not a major concern over all. Work on skating will be a must but time with a skating coach should help that down the line. Overall a solid pick up for any team.

Goalies with this potential come by regular, However Biz Nasty may be a solid prospect on his way to elite status. He can end up anywhere, however Halifax, Lethbridge, Colorado may be the teams that move on him. However, Detroit may very well be his Landing spot.

3- Latvian Left Winger Calogero Crudelli comes with some offensive skill. With Passing, Scoring and Puck Handling as his strength he brings a strong offensive game. An average strength player with solid skating ability, Crudelli is a very solid pick. Most likely a 1st round or early second round pick. His Checking game needs work but he is disciplined. A solid prospect that can be a scoring leader in this league.

Teams in need of offense may want to get their claws in this player. Colorado, Detroit are probably in on him, also Lethbridge would probably be interested to boast their offense.

4- American right winger Freddie Sweeney is a high Scoring, Fast Skating, solid Puck Handling forward. While Checking is an issue, offense is not. Strength needs work as it is still in development. He does get knocked off the puck because of it but can be easily fixed. Passing is also weak and in need of some work. Defense may also be an issue but also something that can be fixed with enough training.

In reality, Sweeney can be a solid offensive player for any roster. Some defensive work will help his positioning on ice. Look for Montreal to get in on him as well as St.Louis.

5- Lyle Odelein III is a Canadian Defenseman whose strengths are Scoring, Strength and Defense. While Puck Handling is a weakness for him his skating is also in need of work. He has a slight tendency to get into fights and his Puck Handling needs work. While his defensive game is fine there is room to grow.

Lots of potential here, could be a late 2nd rounder 3rd round pick. Could be a solid pick up. Watch Anchorage, St. Louis here.

6- Mika Kandinsky is a Russia prospect with a solid game. Excels at Scoring, Defense and Skating. His game is balanced. Checking game needs work but not the worst case. The Prospect Showcase is where he has been shining. 10 Goals and 14 assists has him sitting 3rd overall in points after 20 games.

One thing that may have GMs worried about picking him is his open desire to go up to the SHL after his rookie season in the SMJHL. If not for that he could easily be a first round pick. Unfortunately that might set him back until the last 2nd or 3rd round as well. Watch Detroit on him.

7- Jack Bauer weighs is at 230 pounds. The 6’5” Japanese Defensman plays a strong defensive game. His top skills are Defense , Strength and Passing but don’t expect many goals from him as shooting is not a strong point. A solid checking defenseman with speed and endurance, he has a solid all around game.

Many teams will be in the hunt for Bauer. A solid first round pick, watch any of the ten SMJHL teams to pick him.

Overall the solid prospects in this draft run deep into the third round, over all we are looking at 5 rounds of prospects and teams lining up to get their players. Honerable mentions are Travis Bitties, Atlas Rush, Piotr Horvat, Nick Connolly. Lots of Defense and goalies in this draft. Will Every team get their player, probably not, but there are enough players to fill the void.
