Eddie Morozov Tries Again With Filip and Jebany Franciszek
#1

Let’s try this again one more time.

Last week, I was able to reach 5 of the 7 of the Franciszek Family, a hockey family of heptuplets, the story of a lifetime and Poland’s best chance to carve their place in the hockey world. As great of a story as it was, there was one part missing in my report, or rather, 2 things missing.
Jebany and Filip Franciszek were unable to answer my call to an interview for various reasons. For Jebany, an injury on the ice led to a bad case of appendicitis, for which he needed serious emergency care. Filip, on the other hand, politely declined to get an interview with me. I would soon find out why. I was able to talk to Filip, the quiet, skilled and strong-but slight in stature right winger, was a virtual unknown. No one knew what he liked, who he based his play on, and why he was so good at what he did.

Eddie: You’re a tough kid to find, you know. I’m glad to finally meet you.
Filip: Likewise.
Eddie: So no one knows a lot about you, first of all, who do you base your game off of?
Filip: Zadina. Filip Zadina. A wonderful Czech player. Strong with the puck and quick too. I love watching him.
Eddie: By how many minutes are you younger than your brother?
Filip: I’m 4 hours behind Rigger and just 3 minutes behind Jebany. Youngest by 3 minutes.
Eddie: Do they treat you like the youngest?
Filip: If by youngest you mean they leave me alone. I taught myself everything I knew about hockey, my brothers never taught me anything.
Eddie: Do you like playing for them though?
Filip: I wouldn’t trade it for the world, I love it.
Eddie: Who inspired you and your brothers and their love of hockey?
Filip: No one did. We taught ourselves to love the game, watching it on the TV or listening on the radio, and acting out the plays we heard on the cast.
Eddie: And then you’re planning on playing junior hockey with your brothers. What’s your favorite team?
Filip: My brothers and I like the promise in Detroit. Good team, good goalie, good defense. Good team.
Eddie: Is your brother doing better? I’m meeting him tomorrow.
Filip: Jeb’s a glass cannon. A good guy, you’ll like him. Real dry sense of humor
Eddie: Thanks for the time.
Filip: No problem.

After Jebany was able to sit up in bed, I was allowed to meet with him in the local hospital. Just like his brother said, the dry-humored, fast skating defenseman was happy to meet me after waiting so long.

Jebany: Sorry for making you wait.
Eddie: Not a problem.
Jebany: For you, maybe. I’m the one bed-ridden with stitches in my side.
Eddie: Alright. Your younger brother Filip said that you were a glass cannon. Is he right?
Jeb: In a sense, I reckon. I’ve got a pretty good shot as far as I know.
Eddie: Are you certain you have what it takes to make it in the league?
Jeb: I’m very sure.
Eddie: Who’s the troublemaker in your family?
Jeb: Ryszard would always get us in trouble, and Konrad has the bigger mouth. Usually the two of them get us in trouble.
Eddie: And who’s the comedian?
Jeb: As much as I try, I will never be as naturally charismatic and funny as Daichi. He’s just the nicest guy in the whole wide world. We love him.
Eddie: Thank you so much.
Jeb: It’s been nice.
Eddie: Please, take your time and get well soon.

Thus concludes my adventures with the Franciszek brothers, their escapades, and who they really are in public and in private. The brothers are an interesting look into the future of Polish international play, and they could force the IIHF to create a team for Polish players to compete.
