The Knights have done very well so far, currently in a battle with Detroit for first place. With a +22 goal differential they are only one of three teams with a net positive. 5 on 5 hockey has been great for the Knights which will help them come playoff time, they're on the bottom half for shots generated but near the top for shot suppression with an overall total 102% shots for/against. Special teams are something the team needs to practice more as they are currently dead last with a 14.63% power play. The penalty kill is 6th place with 80% and they're 9th overall in combined special teams with 94.63%. The third line of Eriksson-Shepard-Barbashev has been very solid for the team so far, only a combined 15 points, but every player has +3. The coach is able to trust them when the top 6 needs some time to rest.

The Anchorage Armada got off to a bit of a rough start this year. In the first 14 games, the Armada had a record of 2-11-1. This poor performance could be put on anyone's shoulders, but what happened after makes it pretty clear what happened. When management implemented two-a-days until the team got better, it brought everyone together in an unprecedented way. On top of that, the leadership structure was firmed up in the locker room with the captaincy vote. In the past 11 games, the team has posted an impressive record of 2-9-0.

A problem that persists for Anchorage is the relative lack of offensive production. The Armada are tied for last in the league for Goals For, at 2.64 per game. Sitting at 3.12 Goals Against per game, they're in a tough situation. In Goals For/Against, they're second last in the league with 84.62%. Only 3 teams have a positive Goals For/Against, and Anchorage needs to be one of them if they want to make it far in the post-season.

Raptors

A season that started with low expectations is now firmly back where it belongs, with the Colorado Raptors' play of late falling back into the realm of what hockey pundits projected after briefly sitting above .500 and flirting with home-ice advantage in the first round of the playoffs.

Halfway through S49, the Raptors' play can be described as better than expected, with the core of young S50 rookies showing lots of promise and indicating a bright future for Colorado if they are able to retain the talent. However, talent takes time to develop, and with the Raptors having lost 3 in a row and 7 of their last 10, the growing pains are evident.

Goal scoring has been a problem for Colorado, as their 66 goals for are tied with Anaheim for lowest in the league (though the Outlaws have a game in hand on the Raptors). The Raptors' have allowed 74 goals for a differential of -8, and you get the feeling that if the team could start finding the back of the net with more regularity, they'd end up winning more of the close games. Their four overtime losses are second only to the Halifax Raiders' five.

Also, for whatever reason, the team seems to play much better on the road than at home. Maybe the rookies get nervous in front of the Colorado faithful, but the Raptors are 6-2-2 in their last 10 road games, compared to 3-7-0 in their last 10 home matches. This seems like a statistic that will even out over time, but it's still noteworthy.

That said, there is a lot to be excited about with regard to the future of the Dinos. Let's break it down.

Henrik Lekberg Osterman @Thatguy91 leads the Dinos' crop of talented rookies with 2 goals and 8 assists for 10 points in the first half of the season. Osterman is 10th in rookie scoring in the SMJHL, which isn't too shabby for a guy who was drafted in the 6th round, 52nd overall, in the most recent SMJHL Entry Draft.

(Shout out to Alexei Rykov @RaginCajun, who was taken two choices earlier by Montreal at 50th overall and currently leads all rookie scorers in the SMJHL with 17 points)

Osterman benefits from playing on Bo Kane's @NONAME wing. The second-year center and San Francisco Pride prospect has evolved into a true leader for the Raptors, taking the young players under his wing and leading by example with 10 goals and 9 assists for 19 points to date this season. While he has since cooled from his league-leading pace to start the season, Kane continues to be a force for the Raptors and an important leader on and off the ice.

One player that the Raptors would like to see more from is Hariken Urawa @uhh . The viral YouTube sensation from Japan has made strides in adapting to the pro game and is clearly on the right development path, but has been playing limited minutes on the fourth line. Still, even in limited time, Urawa has scored 5 goals and 2 assists, and he averages 1.86 points per every 60 minutes on the ice. Notably, he is also one of the eight players in the league with multiple game-tying goals (2).

Urawa was seen taking practice on the third line this morning, so an increase in ice time may be in his future. He was also spotted after practice doing one-on-one drills with Denver Wolfe @iRockstar, another Dinos veteran who has taken a shine to the young Japanese winger. With 19 points in 25 games, Wolfe is fifth in the league in scoring amongst defensemen, and is the veteran anchor on the Colorado blue line.

Lastly, it wouldn't be right to run a recap of the Raptors' season-to-date without mentioning Calogero Crudelli @jason97. Crudelli is having a monster year, tied with Mika Kandinsky @Mika_Kandinsky for second in league scoring with 28 points, one behind Gaspard Boone @Im_A_Boonana. Crudelli has already matched his S48 point total in half as many games, and is on pace for his first point-per-game season. The third-year junior seems poised to make the jump to the SHL if his development keeps up.

Although most people seem to agree that the Raptors would be bottom feeders this season, they have been a pleasant surprise in the eyes of the fans. They have been sitting around the middle of the pack for most of the duration of the season so far, currently sitting in 8th place with a record of 10-11-4. This may not sound particularly promising but after a quick glance at the underlying statistics the Raptors quickly become a very interesting team with a ton of potential.

First, lets go over the positives;

Defensively sound
The Raptors are currently one of the best defensive teams in the SMJHL with an average of 24.68 shots against per game (2nd in the league) and 2.96 goals against per game (4th in the league). Defence really is not the problem for the Raptors.

Young Stars
The rookies have also been a pleasant surprise. The team is currently fielding 10 rookies (tied for 3rd most in the league), 7 of which are at or above the league average for rookie points production which currently sits at 5. This bodes well the team moving forward.

Faceoffs
The Raptors have been fantastic in the faceoff circle, currently sitting first in the league with 52.28%. Getting possession of the puck is no doubt an important part of any game, so this is definitely a big positive of the team.

Now, lets go over the negatives;

Offensively lacking
The Raptors really are a bipolar team. Great defence but a very lacklustre offence. They are currently last in the league as far as shots for goes with a meagre average of 23.72 per game and second last in the goals for category with an average of only 2.64 per game. This makes them the worst offensive team in the league.

Specialty teams
This, for me, is the biggest problem that the Raptors are facing. They have the worst special teams in the league, currently sitting 9th in powerplay percentage with only 15.46% and 10th in penalty kill percentage with an 77.01%. This adds up to an abysmal 92.48% combined special teams percentage.

All in all there are some great pillars for the team to build upon and if they can only fix their offence and special teams situation and get them up to the league average they would truly be a team to be reckoned with.

The chemistry for the Colorado Raptors is gone for a bit as they went on a 6 game losing streak. They are now down to the 8th place in the standings after a great start of the season. Due to this it is time to change lines a bit, a few people have been switched around and for example Bo Kane is now getting his shot at first line center. One of the main reasons for their struggles might be their powerplay %, as they are in 9th place overall with only 15.46%. Their penalty kill is even worse as they are listed 10th overall with only 77% of their penalties killed. The Colorado Raptors look like they need to shoot the puck more as they are also 10th in shots fired, with just 23.72 per game average. There are a lot of improvements possible for the Raptors, so hopefully the linechanges will have a positive effect on the team chemistry and to get ready for the playoffs.

Phineas Gold - Militia

The Militia have been off to a great start this year.  Backed by a squad of 14 rookies who are playing in every game, they are currently 3rd in the league and only one of three teams to have a positive points differential. If they want to contend with the Knights and Falcons a few things are going to have change, or improve.  In their matchups the Militia have been great on getting those rebounds into the net.  The shooters are getting their shots in a critical moments but as compared to the league we are basically average or below average in almost all the stats.  If we can get our core rookie group trained up we should have no problem in the playoffs.

Here is what we are doing right.  We currently are delivering the most hits in the league.  We are a small but aggressive team.  It seems we have the other teams cowering away from our physicality and its giving us opportunities that our middle of the road numbers otherwise don't back up.  Currently we are at 18.63 hits a game.  Not bad for a team rebuilding.

We really need our centers to be winning more faceoffs.  While our centers are driving our plays and getting the puck where it needs to be, we currently have lowest faceoff win percentage of any team.  At 45.15% midway through the season, improving on this should really help bolster our playoff potential.

While most of our rookies are playing well, the 3rd and 4th lines are still trying to find their rhythm. These line seems to be on more often than not when the goals are getting scored and has lead to a huge disparity from -5 on the bottom to +14 on the top.  These lines really need to start producing or our top players are going to be too tired to even play in the playoffs.

In fact, looking at our stats one would wonder how we're third in the league.  I guess someone out there is rooting for a team that was considered to be the underdogs by many going into this season.  A team that had been collapsing inwards has now found new life with a vibrant locker room and great players who are really putting themselves out there.  Once these rookies are no longer rookies, it can be safe to assume that this will be a powerhouse team to contend with over the next few seasons.

The Anaheim Outlaws have had some successes and some weak points throughout S49. After winning the Four Star Cup in S47 and losing in the finals in S48 the Outlaws then lost a number of top players due to SHL call ups. We have been consistently in the middle of the pack of the team standings and hope to shore up some holes as the season progresses. One shining point for Anaheim has been the 5-on-4. The Outlaws are at the top of the league for Power Play conversions at 27.27%. Our ability to take the man advantage and turn it into points is no small reason why we are picking up some of our wins. However, that can be contrasted with our lack of conversion at even strength. As the lineup is maturing we are hoping to bring those even strength goals up and continue to produce on the PP.

On the other side of the ice Anaheim is second to last in the league for Goals Against and last when it comes to Goals For / Against ratio. There are a number of causes to that and early in the season our nearly capped goalie was called up the SHL for 8 games, but we have been working to solidify that defensive core. With a few tweaks here and there and some TPE gains we are hopeful that we can plug some of those holes and keep the offensive production high.

raiders Halifax Raiders  raiders

▲▲ Penalty Kill
The efficiency of the penalty kill has been a major asset for the Raiders so far, with a PK% second only to the Lions.
Special mention: Rookie defenseman Adam Barron, T-4th league-wide in shot blocks.

Defensive Zone Face-offs
Of all the places to take a face-off, there is none more dangerous than your own zone. Maintaining a high efficiency in these situations can be key to holding on to a lead or preventing your opponent's from growing out of reach, and the Raiders have done well in this regard: a 53.53% rate on DZ face-offs is good for 2nd in the league.
Special mention: Center Conor Tanner, who leads the team with 54.59% in face-offs on the season.

Hitting
The Raiders are second in the league in hits per game; only the Militia can boast a better number. Though a few players in particular have contributed more to that number, on down the lineup you'll see players that aren't afraid to take the body.
Special mention: Team captain Atlas Rush, who leads the league in hits.

Shootouts
Halifax has gotten to the shootout five times thus far this season, and has won four of them. Coach Ed Balls does seem to focus on keeping focused in the SO, and a few of their shooters have made names for themselves with their unpredictability in one-on-one situations.
Special mention: Raiders goalie Biz Nasty, who has a .800 save percentage on penalty shots/shootout attempts.

Power Play
When you have the chance, you want to make it count. Despite boasting some skilled skaters in the lineup, Halifax's power play ranks 7th out of 10 with a rate of 17.17%. The combined power play/penalty kill percentage is enough to get over that highly sought-after 100, but there is room to improve puck movement and zone entries with the man-advantage.
Special mention: Veteran defenseman Oliver Klozoff, who has tallied 7 of his 19 points on the power play.

Shots For/Against
One of the most useful ways one can track the direction of play is to take into account shots for and against. If you aren't shooting, you aren't scoring... and if the opponent is shooting more than you, then you better hope you have a capable goalie, or that you can limit those shots to low-danger areas. Halifax is 9th in the league in shots for, and 8th in the league in shots against.
Special mention: Winger Ricky Spanish, who has 62 shots on goal but also 15 of his shots blocked and 57 shots that missed the net entirely.

Consistency
A sure sign of a team that needs to mature is a high amount of swings in either direction: the Raiders have won three games in a row twice this season, but have also gone on five game and three game losing skids. Perhaps this is a greater reflection of inconsistency in the roster: key players have been prone to go on long droughts without scoring.
Special Mention: Rookie defenseman Adam Barron, who scored 3 of his 4 points in the first five games of the season.

▼▼ Wins in Regulation
Halifax is dead last in the league for wins in regulation, with just 6 of their 11 wins earned without extra time needed. It's up for debate whether this is down to a lack of killer instinct, or if the coaching staff needs to have the players better prepared for game time.

Lethbridge Lions

When looking at a team with 12 rookies in the starting lineup and including 2 more in goal, the Lethbridge lions could not ask for much more standings wise coming into a new week of the SMJHL. With all of these rookies come growing pains especially in the net. With a young defense core and young goalies, this team struggles hard with keeping shots off of their new goalie with almost 30 shots against a game, this is almost 7 shots worse that the best team in the league. Making sure the defense are getting to the net to prevent rebounds in going to be one of our biggest challenges moving on into the new part of the season.

When looking at the opposite side of things Lethbridge lions have somehow been making it work on the road. Their stats on the road are much better than the are at home which seems to surprise me for a team of rookies. Out of their element they are striving to be the best they can with a goal differential of +7. With a record of 8-3-1 on the road, it is the second best away record in the league to the Kelowna Knights. On the other hand, they also have the worst home record of any team at 2-8-0 with a goal differential of -14.

Records aside, the Lethbridge Lions do not have to much to worry about only being 5 points out of third place. With some bigger and smaller improvements shown already, one of the stats that really took my eye was the PP+PK% for this team. With a stat line of 103.54%, they are fourth in the league but only behind first place by 3%. With most of their % coming from the PK at 85.26%, with a few more chances on the PP, this team will be a team to be reckoned with on special teams.

The St. Louis Scarecrows have been hovering right around the middle of the pack for the majority of the season so far. With 25 points in 24 games, the winning percentage is just a hair above .500. Unfortunately, the team is in a bit of a rough patch, as they've gone 3-4-3 over the last 10, despite some scoring prowess from 2nd- and 5th-leading SMJHL scorers Mika Kandinsky and Nicolaj Muller. The 'Crows are sitting at a -5 goal differential which is tied for 4th best in the league. Look for the boys to build on their stellar 1 game winning streak as the Detroit Falcons swoop into town. Luckily, the Scarecrows are at home for the next game as they have 13 points in home games vs. 12 in away games.

The rookies are starting to blossom, with scoring starting to pick up. Rookie scoring is led by Yamamoto Mitsuharu with 11 points. Lowly, lowly Sasha Dangelchek is bringing up the rear with just a single goal in 24 games. Morale remains high in the locker room and the team has really come together. If only that Dangelchek could stop being such a pigeon...

Go 'Crows! (197)

S49 Crows in Review

SMJHL's S49 hasn't gone as hoped so far for this iteration of the Crows, as they have so far struggled to a tie for fifth place with Anaheim. At 11-10-3, St. Louis has limped to a .458 winning percentage, and hopes to turn it around for the second half of the season.

Oof: Special Teams

With a loaded top-line that includes multiple players in the hunt for the scoring title, the Crows must be a little disappointed in their sputtering powerplay. Having converted on only 13 of their 80 man-advantage opportunities, the Crows are sitting at a terrible 16.25%, third-worst in the league and far away from Anaheim's league leading 27%. Their penalty kill is faring better, but not by much. Killing 79.61% (82/103) of their penalty kills, the Crows PK is 4th worst in the league. Turning their special teams around into what they should be should see the Crows start to pick up more and more wins.

Uh-Oh: Schedule

St. Louis so far has put up middle of the pack numbers, against a middle of the pack schedule. With St. Louis having played only 9 of their 24 games against the top half of the league, is St. Louis' inability to compete with the big boys a sign that this is the season they run out of steam.? So far, St. Louis has played 9 games against the 4 best teams in the league, putting up a record of 3-5-1. StL has played 15 games against the teams below them, achieving a record of 8-5-2. Good, but when you take into context that StL has gone 2-3-1 against the league worst Whalers, you discover a team that could be much higher in the standings.

Playoff Projections

St. Louis has been your typical average SMJHL franchise this season. When facing off against above average competition, St. Louis has struggled mightily, only being able to collect 7 out of a possible 18 points. With their schedule only getting harder in the back half of the schedule, with 13/26 games against the teams currently above them, it is very possible that the Crows continue their middle of the pack play. An inability to get points off the big guns makes it awfully hard to trust the Crows in the playoffs, when they'll have to beat these teams on a consistent basis to achieve their postseason goals. StL has time to turn it around, but the question is, can they?

The Raiders are sitting 4/10 in the SMJHL off very strong overtime points. We are last in the league with only 6 regular time victories, but have won 4/5 shootouts and have picked up points in 2/3 of our total games played. It may not be pretty, but it's effective now. Come playoff time we will need to find a way to turn those overtime losses into wins, because game points wont mean anything.
Sitting second in Penalty Kill % (84.88%) allows for some more aggressive play and we should aim to take advantage of that by playing a more aggressive style of hockey. We are also second in hits per game, so we have been bringing the punch, but have been keeping it clean. I believe continuing this style of play will benefit us in the long term as other teams get worn down.
We take the second least amount of shots for per game, averaging at 23.83. This is 6 shots per game average behind the current leaders Detroit. This paired with allowing the 3rd most shots against per game with 27.04 mean that the goalies have been playing above average to get us into extra time situations to gain a point, but we need to put some focus here to improve both these categories. This stat is a bit worrisome because it will be very difficult to win games in the post season having these metrics.
The Raiders have a lot of work to do to get in prime shape for playoffs, time to hit the gym!

Lethbridge is just starting to hit its stride as the season comes heads into its main phase. After some early struggles which had us at the bottom of the table by a significant margin, we are now right in the middle of the pack with only 3 points between us and 4th place. The main two things that kept us down in the first half of the season were our powerplay struggles and an abysmal home record. We are 3-8-1 in our own barn, and while our powerplay percentage has been held up to a respectable 18.28%, that is pretty much all through our second unit, the 1PP has been mostly held in check. The stats that give us optimism are our penalty kill percentage and the number of rookies we have on our team. Our PK is number 1 in the league stopping 85.26% of opposing powerplays from converting. The number of rookies on our team may seem like a disadvantage but for us, it signals room for growth. With 13 rookies on our roster, we have extraordinary room for growth as they rack up early TPE like training camp and Post Game Shows. We hope that our young team can hit its stride at the right time and make moves in the playoffs.

Well, the first games are over in the season and the Raptors had a nice start, but felt a bit behind the last few games. The Raptors are 8th at the moment. Think one of the weakness of the Team is the scoring that we have to improve for the next games. The Defensive is well, but not the best in the league, but I think good enough to win games. One of the scoring issues are the shots, there is just one player of the Raptors in the Top 10 by shooting (Calogero Crudelli with 87 Shots in 26 Games), there has to be at minimum 2 Players with that many shots. Calogero Crudelli is also the scoring Leader, but second … far away on position 27th is Denver Wolfe. So, that the hole team has to improve. Also the Power Play need to be better, just 17.00% of the power play opportunities are successful for the raptors and also the PK is at position 8th in the League with 77.42%. So, a lot to to the next weeks for the staff and the players.
