VERSUS

Welcome everybody to the 91st game of this season where the Colorado Raptors just faced off versus the Detroit Falcons.
Looking at todays line-up’s we notice that there is one big surprise in the Raptors net as Low Temp is starting for his 4th game of the season. The Colorado backup goalie will have a hard game ahead of them as the Falcons are one of the strongest teams this season. Let’s see how well he fared

1st period

In an evenly matched first period we see that the Falcons are opening the score when Raino Kyllonen scored his 7th goal of the season, assisted by his linemate Nurmagomedov he managed to capitalize on equal strength. Not long after that we see Satoshi Zizagooney go off for a hooking penalty, giving the Raptors the chance to equalize on the games first powerplay situation.
This is something you don’t have to tell Henrik Lekberg Osterman, as within 10 seconds of getting the powerplay he scored his second goal of the season after an assist of Crudelli and a secondary assist of the back-up goaltender Low Temp.
This would not be all yet for the period as it once again is Detroit who are taking the lead in this game. When Derek Bohne Jr. got sent to the box for hooking, it was Austin Roenick who scored his 9th goal of the season on the powerplay, giving Detroit a 2-1 lead after the first period.

2nd period

In the second period we also see both teams putting work in offensively, with Detroit getting slightly more scoring chances as Colorado, but it are the Raptors however that are getting the first goal of the period to equalize this game. After already having scored a goal, Henrik Lekberg Osterman finds fellow rookie Vorian Atreides who buries the puck for his second goal of the season. But this is not enough yet for the Raptors, as despite the fact they are getting outshot, they do manage to get in front of the Falcons after Ja'Aj Coitus-Wagg scored his eight goal of the season. The score remains 3-2 as the period ends and the last period will have to decide the winner in this game.

3rd period
In this last period we see an even bigger offensive burst from the Falcons as they managed to shoot at Low Temp for about 15 times, it is the Colorado goaltender however who stands tall and manages to get all the pucks out. Colorado on the other hand was not able to show much offensively as they gave it their all to defend the lead. With just 5 shots on net they also did not put out any more offense. However due to the great showing of Low Temp who stopped 31 out of 33 shots this game, the Colorado Raptors are taking home the win.

And I'm an idiot and did this in the same sim week I already have 3 TPE for... Gonna leave it anyway because I already wrote it.

Penalties Penalties Penalties

This game was a race to see who can capitalize on special teams. With an astounding 12 penalties, each team spent their fair share of time in the box. However, this game stood out due to the amount of matching penalties called.

Of the 12 calls, 6 of them were matching minors (and one double minor) which brought out the 4 on 4 squads. The Raptor's Ja'Aj Coitus-Wagg was the only player to cash in on these 4-on-4's late in the second. Though Detroit managed to land their two goals on Power Plays in the first.

Both teams will have to work on their discipline if they want to realize their aspirations of winning the cup.

Impressive Showing from a Veteran Goaltender

The Colorado Raptors have been primarily playing their 2nd year goalie Knox Booth this season over their 5th year backup Low Temp. Temp hasn't exactly been improving his game over the past years and has been relinquished to a backup role. This is an odd time for Colorado to put in their backup as Detroit is leading the league in the standings, but Low Temp stood on his head today. He stopped 31 of 33 shots with the two that got in coming in the first. He then stopped 24 straight shots to end the night with a 0.939 save percentage to land his 2nd win of the year in his 4 starts. Backup goaltenders can have it tough at times, but this was a truly impressive showing by Low Temp.

Three Stars:
In this segment, we will analyze the players that Simon T chose as the three stars, and determine whether they deserve the accolade.
3 - Low Temp Raptors

Temp was a devastating force for the Raptors in this hard-fought victory against the league leaders. He faced 33 shots scattered from all over the defensive zone behind his weaker defensive core. He made 31 saves which were nearly double the other team's goaltenders amount and allowed his team to squeak out of this game with the W. Alongside the .939 save percentage, he also had an assist on Colorado's first powerplay goal.
2 - Calogero Crudelli Raptors

Crudelli was a great playmaker in this narrow win against the Falcons. Creating plays on the first and third goals of the game for the Raptors, that allowed for the game-winning goal to be scored. He also had 2 shots, a hit, and ate up over 21 minutes in the game. Definitely deserving of the third star as he worked hard to earn his stats.
1 - Henrik Lekberg Osterman Raptors

Osterman had a key role to play in the tight victory over Detroit. Scoring the first goal to get the Raptors scoring in this game going, and then setting up the game-tying goal. He also had 2 additional shots, a hit, but only had limited minutes. I would've preferred one of the other goal scorers to appear as the first star in this game, as they may have played a more prominent role in this win.

Standings Shakeup:
Detroit was wrapping up their three-game homestand with a game against the Colorado Raptors, coming off a shutout victory against Halifax three days before. Their record entering this one was 13-3-1, obviously good enough for first place in the league after a long run of victories shortly after the beginning of the season. Meanwhile, Colorado was also coming off a win of their own against Vancouver. Their overall record is 9-6-3 entering this game, meaning they had accumulated 21 of a possible 36 points, which put them above .500 in the league which is above average. This game did nothing much in terms of the standings against each other for the Raptors or the Falcons, moving Colorado slightly closer to Detroit in the table.

Turning Point:
The ice tilt in this contest between the two cross-nation rivals was like a roller coaster as it shifted constantly until the Raptors took the final point of control in the second period. The first period was like the caterpillar portion of the coaster as the Falcons took the lead in the fifth minute, then the Raptors evened the strength on the powerplay just 2 minutes later, before the Falcons got a power-play marker of their own just 3 minutes before the end of the first frame. It only took 8 minutes into the second period before we were back on equal playing terms and then only an additional 6 minutes after that until Colorado took the lead and then held on for dear life until the end of the game.

DotG - Satoshi Zizagooney - Defenseman, Falcons

Dud of the Game goes to Satoshi Zizagooney of the Detroit Falcons. The Japanese defender cost his team the lead with a boneheaded penalty seven and a half minutes into the first period, and was present on the ice for both of Colorado's goals in the second period. No shots on goal, no hits, no blocked shots... no help to his team, at all.

⭐⭐⭐ - Low Temp - Goalie, Raptors

A performance like Temp's is what a coach dreams of when he realizes it's time to play the backup. Some of his highlights were an acrobatic save on Detroit defender Travis Bitties in the first period, covering up on a frantic scramble in front of his net late in the third, and slashing the shit out of Khabib Nurmagomedov's shinbone early in the second period. Whether for good or bad, Temp was implicated in the game and helped earn his team the W.

⭐⭐ - Calogero Crudelli - Winger, Raptors

Crudelli's puck movement was on full display in this game. Two assists were fitting reward for a player that had the puck on a string all night, but that's not all he brought to the table: yeoman work on the penalty kill helped keep the game close, and his bone crushing hit on Detroit's Raino Kyllonen just seconds after a face-off gave his team momentum that would prove key in holding onto the lead in the third.

⭐ - Henrik Lekberg Osterman - Winger, Raptors

Perhaps the best part of Henrik Lekberg Osterman's game is how balanced it is; he seems equally comfortable skating with the puck, dishing it off to a teammate, or shooting it. His goal on the powerplay in the first period was a nifty one, flipping a loose puck over Emiko Spector's shoulder with craft and skill, but the highlight of his night (and anyone else's for that matter) was a no-look pass to teammate Vorian Atreides to tie the game half-way into the second period. Top marks for a top prospect.

Physical Play Comparison

What the fudge. Does someone want to tell Colorado and Detroit this is a contact sport? There were a fair number of penalties, so I guess this could be the ref’s fault. 19 hits total is really low. As someone who really enjoys hits, it makes me a bit sad. Needless to say, no player had more than 2 hits for either team. Blocks are a little more normal, except that Colorado had twice as many as Detroit. Lee Samson had 3 of Colorado’s blocks, so good on him. This seems like a game Detroit should have won, except Colorado had a bunch of time on the power play. I guess I give the physical advantage to Colorado. Both teams lost the hitting game, but the Raptors clearly won the shot blocking. That combined with the disparity in penalties awarded probably played a big part in earning them a victory.

When the Game Got Away

The game never really got away from the Falcons. They were always in the game, and outshot the Raptors 15-5 in the 3rd period. But, some penalties were costly, and may have taken enough away from their victory. They had a chance for a powerplay in the 2nd period, but instead Nurmagomedov made it offsetting penalties, and so it was 4 on 4. 8 seconds after 4 on 4 started is when the Raptors scored the winning goal. The Falcons then took 2 more penalties in the 3rd. They never gave up another goal, but they did waste 4 minutes where they either couldn't attack, or their attack was severely limited by having only 4 players on the ice. It didn't get away from them, but penalties cost the Falcons the game.

Goaltender Battle
Today's match up saw a good fight between two of the higher end goaltenders in the league. With Low Temp representing the Colorado Raptors between the pipes and Emiko Spector taking the start for the Detroit Falcons, it was bound to be a good match up and we definitely weren't disappointed. Temp put up an amazing night with a .939 save percentage on the evening to take home the win while Spector held their own in net despite lackluster defensive performances all around. Both goaltenders showed that they are of an elite calibre of play in this game.

Defensive Leader
Lee Samson of the Colorado Raptors was a major game changer tonight as they would go on to be a +1 player, post two penalty minutes, but most importantly have three shots blocked. Samson was all over the ice tonight helping their team secure the win and had a huge defensive impact for their team. If not for solid players around them though, the tale of the tape may write a different story, but it was a hot not unquestionably for one of the Raptors most promising young players. As we move into playoff time, Samson will need to show that same drive night in and night out.

Offensive Catalyst
Calogero Crudelli is a player that you may not hear about very often, but tonight was a night to remember for the Raptors player. Two assists, two shots and a hit makes for a pretty strong stat line for any player, but Crudelli's lackluster performance through out the rest of the season makes it even more impressive. This was a big game for the young player who will look to take their career to greater heights when things become tough in the post season. With only a few short games before playoffs begin, it's do or die time to prove themselves.

I've always heard of the idea that teams that can spare the occasional loss should play a game from behind to prepare for that mentality, but it is an entirely new concept to me to have a practice for your Penalty Kill in the middle of a game. I mean, come on, why else would Detroit suffer five full penalties through the game? Detroit's Penalty Kill unit killed off all but one of the Colorado opportunities, but part of the "arm tied behind your back" strategy is that you know you can win this game. The risk Detroit took may have been calculated, but they must be pretty bad at math up in the "pleasant peninsula." Discipline is going to be a big factor to keep an eye on for Detroit in their next few games.

4th Star

In another 3-2 final, Colorado was able to beat Detroit, shutting them out in the second and third period. And tonight’s 4th star of the game goes to Ja’aj Coitus-Wagg. Coitus-Wagg scored the game winning goal for the Raptors with just over 5 minutes remaining in the 2nd period, and was one of four players to finish positive in +/- tonight, for his team. Also, Ja’aj did well on faceoffs winning 12/26 helping Colorado win that battle on the night 47-40. Coitus-Wagg also played an extremely physical game getting a slashing penalty called on himself, as well as getting a couple clean hits against the Falcons. Fortunately, Colorado was able to kill the penalty and win the game with the help of Coitus-Wagg performance tonight.
