Lethbridge Lions vs Montreal Militia

Welcome to the 113th game of the regular season. This matchup would see the third game between the Militia and the Lions. The lions we’re coming off a three game losing streak and the Militia were coming off a three game winning streak after their loss to the Lions in their 2nd matchup. The lions were looking for some mojo and the Militia wanted to keep their streak alive!!! Lets get into the game.

1st Period
We start off this action loaded period as normal with both teams sending out their lines and looking for moments to capitalize. The Lions wouldn’t have to wait very long as at 4:28 they got their first opportunity. The play started with a dump by the lions that was fielded by the Militia goalie Mike Hunt who tried to give a breakaway pass to Padraig Sarantez only to get intercepted by Liam Huthinson of Lions! In a quick turnaround Liam passed it off to his teammate Luca Veccelli who was all alone in the Montreal zone. A quick flick of the wrist and Lethbridge was up 1-0. That’s the Lions #2 lien for you. Quick at changing that pace and striking when they have their chances. Not willing to stop there the Lions steamrolled on. At 13:04 the Militia are handed their first penalty as Zbigniew Pokrywka is sent to the box for holding. Not 40 seconds later, Liam Hutchinson shoots the puck and get blocked by Padraig. Unfazed, he shoots again and misses the net. Now determined he grabs that free puck, he is a machine, he buries it in the back of the net. 2-0 Lethbridge. Within the next 30 seconds, not to be outdone by his teammate, Hugh Jazz buries his 10th of the season in a similar fashion. It seems the Militia have taken on more than they can handle and are now down 3-0 in the opening 14 minutes of play. In a bold move by the coach, the Mike Hunt is kept in play while Mitchell Maverick watched his team from the bench. In the last goal scored in the game, Montreal rallies behind rookie Bobby Lane who scores off a brilliant feed from Olin O’Dowd off the faceoff to make the game 3-1 at 14:48. We end the period with Montreal on the power play after Delver Fudgeson get 2 for holding the stick of Phineas Gold. 13 Shots for the Lions and 9 for the Militia.

2nd Period
The Militia were clearly rattled after that first period. While they were ready to go out there and fight, maybe they were too dedicated to the idea. This game they decided to really live up to their team name as the Militia. These boys were ready to be rowdy and this period certainly showed that. One thing to remember guys, you cant win if you’re only playing defense. No goals were scored in this period, but the Militia managed to rack up 3 penalties. Montreal's budding star forward Alexei "Rajincajun" Rykov, who has been on fire this season, threw in a high stick at 47 seconds into the period. In an attempt to retain possession of the puck after a pass by Padraig he whipped that stick up catching a man with no blood. So into the box he went as he watched his team go on the PK again. At 6:44 after being ejected from the face-off, Cap Hatter was looking for blood but found only a penalty instead. After Phineas Gold delivered a hit on Cant Eykhil, Cap Hatter was caught in a roughing play across the ice after being taunted by one of the Lions. We end the period with one more penalty to star forward Herry Morris IV for holding on Akira Ren after the former lost the puck to one of the star rookies on the Lions team. Look out Herry, the young blood are coming for you. The period ended with no goals and 20 shots for the Lions vs the 11 for the Militia.

3rd Period
Again this period is marked by no goals and was a bit more even in terms of strength for the two teams. Lethbridge picked up two penalties and Montreal picked up one, but neither team was able to distinguish themselves any further. Boruvka Banananak pulled the first penalty for interference at 4:31, Herry got his 2nd of the game for hooking at 10:44, and Akira Ren pulled in another penalty for tripping at the same time pushing the game into a 4v4. Keeping their goalie on the ice, both teams played out until the buzzer sounded ending the game with a decisive victory for the Lions. Shots for this period were 9 for Lethbridge and 12 for Montreal.

DotG - Alexei Rykov - Winger, Militia

Dud of the Game goes to rookie forward Alexei Rykov, who finished the night with a -1 rating and no shots on net. With the exception of his presence on the ice for Luca Veccelli's goal at 4:03 of the 1st period, Rykov was held off the scoresheet completely. A lack of physicality coupled with poor offensive instincts indicated an off-night for the young Russian.

⭐⭐⭐ - Luca Veccelli - Center, Lions

Lions center Luca Veccelli earns the third star, finishing the night with a goal, assist, nearly two minutes on the penalty kill, and an even 50% on the face-off dot. Veccelli's playmaking skills were on display all night, feeding pass after pass to his linemates Liam Hutchinson and Eva Lykke Aparjode, who had five shots apiece.

⭐⭐ - Liam Hutchinson - Winger, Lions

A crunching hit into the boards. A deft pass between a defender's legs. A rocket release that finds the back of the net. Lions winger Liam Hutchinson did it all in his team's 23rd game of the season, and were it not for the show put on by his goaltender, the power forward might have taken home top-honors.

⭐ - Markus Tegernako - Goalie, Lions

The Swiss rookie net-minder put in a fantastic performance for the Lions and earned his first star billing. He made 31 stops on 32 shots, none better than a sprawling save to deny Militia defender Touncie Bitties at 15:40 of the 3rd period. Reaction time and rebound control were major strengths of his game, and Lethbridge takes home 2 points in large part due to winning the goaltending battle.

Physical Play Comparison

This is more like it. There is a lot to like in this game if you like checking. A total of 48 hits in this game makes me happy. 22 for Lethbridge and 26 for Montreal. Baruvka Banananak went off on this game, contributing 6 hits for Lethbridge. Face of the Franchise had 4 for the Lions too. On the side of Montreal, Herry Morris IV had 5 hits, while Padraig Sarantez and Ravyn Tedisko each had 4. Blocks favored Lethbridge, 16 to 11. Jack Wilson had 7 blocks, nearly half of Lethbridge’s total, all on his own. Touncie Bitties and Wyatt Ruschkoff each had 3 blocks for Monreal. As much as I love hits, I have to slightly favor Lethbridge for their physical play in this game. I’ll take 5 shots blocked over 4 hits any day. I don’t know that it made much difference, since Lethbridge took an early lead in this game and never let it go.

First Comment - 118 words

The Good:
Montreal’s Third Line consisting of Tom Fiddler, Bobby Lane, and Ricky Bobby combined with the second defense pairing of Olin O’Dowd and Zbigniew Pokrywka were able to make the only goal for Montreal in the first period. Montreal’s Penalty kill also did a decent job of a 75% success rate managing to shutdown Lethbridge 3 of 4 attempts. Montreal also leads the way with 26 hits once again showing their highly physical level of play they have shown this regular season. Lethbridge has been a rough matchup for Montreal the entire season and while the squad is heavily ladened with rookies we are still seeing standouts even in the tough battles against a strong Lethbridge team.

Second Comment - 108 words

The Bad:
Mike Hunt while having a save percentage of .929 still gave up three goals and one of them on the power play. This on top of the fact that Hunt faced 10 more shots than Tegernako who only gave up one goal shows a gap in Montreal’s defense and the inability to generate an offense against Lethbridge consistently enough to win. The other bad part is the game was an absolute snore after the first period as never once do we see anyone come close to scoring again and both goalies manage to shutdown the ice after giving up the only goals in the first period.

Third Comment - 162 words

The Ugly:
Montreal took 10 penalty minutes in the game with Zbigniew Pokrywka’s holding call allowing Liam Hutchinson to score a goal on the powerplay. The lack of discipline only seemed to escalate from there with the Russian rookie Alexei Rykov losing his shit within 43 seconds of the second period and going for a high sticking seeming to forget to play the puck and the nearest opposing skull. Capp Hatter then also got a penalty for roughing and Herry Morris IV getting a penalty for holding. Harris decided the sin bin was the place to be and returned in the third period for a hooking call. Rykov was especially embarrassing as he has played relatively cleanly and for someone who was at one point leading the rookie class in total points he needs to learn to channel his inner peace or face more penalties as he adapts to the much more aggressive playstyle we are seeing out of Montreal this season.

Lines Usage for each team
This is a classic tale of too many penalties for the Militia. The Militia have a strong crop of rookies to rely on and therefore they try to use their 4th line more than most teams. For this particular event, the Militia attempted 12% usage of their 4th line, while the Lions opted for just 10%. Many teams opt for much less. The unfortunate reality for the Militia this game is that too many penalties wore down the top 3 lines, leaving their 4th line with 10:30 minutes of game time, 10% more than desired and more than their 3rd line. The Militia special teams penalty kill unit conists of Boone and Morris IV, two of the Militia's best players and scorers, and Tom Fiddler with Tedisko. Tom centers the 3rd and Tedisko wings on the 2nd, leaving the 4th line to eat up precious minutes in the game.

Strong game for Ricky Bobby
Despite no points on the board, Ricky Bobby continues to impress. Playing just 11 minutes with no special teams time, Ricky Bobby managed 5 shots on goal. Ricky Bobby and Bobby Lane have shown chemistry in the past and continue to do so here. Late in the 2nd, the pair would dazzle with a quick tick tac toe that unfortunately ended in a big save. Pass to Bobby, Pass to ricky, Pass back to bobby, pass back to ricky for a shot. Later, Ricky Bobby would continue to get opportunities with a beautiful hit to force the puck to a Militia D-man, only to receive the puck shortly after for a shot

A Tale of Two Goalies
Markus Tegernako, Lions starting goaltender, took home the first star of the game today, but credit should be given to Mike Hunt. Tegernako made some incredible saves to keep the lead, stopping 31 of 32 shots. Not to be outdone, Mike Hunt faced 42 shots. Unfortunately for Mike, a slow start for his team and himself saw 3 pucks end up in the back of the net on 12 shots. But Mike rebounded in the second and stopped all 20 shots. Without strong support from his team, ultimately the W went to Markus. Markus saw one goal in the first period, where all 4 goals this game were scored, versus the Militia's 3rd line.

When the Game Got Away

Montreal let this game fall from them quickly. 14 minutes into the game they were down 3-0. They answered once 40 seconds later, but a 3-0 hole is a heck of a task. They definitely let the game get away from them, but tried admirably to bring it back. Goaltender Mike Hunt was asleep early, and let the Lions jump out to a 3-0 lead on just 12 shots. Hunt woke up and ended up stopping 39 of 42 shots, but he wasn't prepared in the 1st period and that put the game too far out of reach for the Militia to come back.

Comment 1: Markus Tegernako Shines
The first star of the night was Markus Tegernako and rightfully so! Tegernako made 31 saves on 32 shots to net a 0.969 save percentage that carried the Lethbridge Lions to victory. This game marks Tegernako’s first ever career win. He will feel very good about picking this one up after his first start resulted in the loss. If Tegernako is able to keep up these solid performances he definitely deserves more starts! While Lethbridge starter Nolan McMahon is a very sold goalie, having a solid two goalie system may reap benefits down the stretch as the Lions attempt to secure a higher seed for playoffs.

Comment 2: What a First Period!
Fans were quickly entertained tonight! All of four goals that were scored in the game were scored in the first period. Lions rookie Luca Veccelli opened up the scoring four minutes into the game with a nice wrist shot that went top corner. Veccelli would be involved in the second goal a short time later on the power play. He made a nice feed to Johnny Patey who put a shot on net that resulted in a nice juicy rebound for Liam Hutchinson to tap in. Less than 30 seconds after that Hugh Jazz quckly brought the puck up ice and scored with a seeing eye shot! 40 seconds later the Montreal Militia would got on the board with Bobby Lane’s blazing slapshot that beat Markus Tegernako five hole. The fans were pumped for more goals but unfortunately that was where the scoring ended and both goalies shut the door for the rest of the game.

Comment 3: A Physical Game
In addition to being a game with a lot of shots, the game had a lot of big hits that kept the crowd energized! On the side of the victorious Lethbridge Lions, Boruvka Banananak led the way with 6 of the team’s 22 hits! Banananak was a monster and set the tone early and often that the Lions were here to play. Face of The Franchise also stepped up having 4 hits of his own in only 11 minutes of ice time. If Banananak and Franchise can keep hitting like this throughout the season, they will create a lot of turnovers. On the side of the Montreal Militia, Herry Morris IV led the way with 5 hits. However he also had 2 minor penalties that didn’t help his team. Padraig Sarantez and Ravyn Tedisko also had 4 hits each which ensured that the Lions weren’t the only ones out there throwing big hits!

Rykov Teammates Not Deterred By Rookie's Recent Slump

Before tonight's loss against the Lions, Montreal had been enjoying a mini-streak of sorts, winning their previous three games. However, despite the strong team-wide play, rookie Alexei Rykov @RaginCajun has found himself struggling as of late.

Playing on the top line with Gaspard Boone @Im_A_Boonana and Herry Morris IV @Taxman100, Rykov has only found the net once in the past four games. Since scoring his rookie-leading tenth goal against Halifax last week, his stick has gone cold as he's failed to register a single point in the team's past three games.

"It's normal for a rookie," said Boone of his talented young teammate. "It's a long season, and I think one of the earliest things you learn in this league is how to deal with adversity.

"[Rykov] is a hell of a player. Really fun to play with. We've all been through those times where it just isn't going in, and we know he'll be back on the scoresheet soon enough."

Goaltender Battle
This was an interesting night for both goaltenders as we saw Markus Tegernako get the start for the Lethbridge Lions while Mike Hunt opened the game for the Montreal Militia. Despite the 3-1 result, both goaltenders had absolutely fantastic nights between the pipes with them both posting a rare game above 90%, including a brilliant show from Tegernako with only a goal against for a final save percentage of .969. Things are getting heated in the SMJHL as the season winds down and both of these goaltenders are going to be ridiculously important moving into the biggest time of the year.

Defensive Specialist
Jack Wilson was tonight's winner in the defensive category with one of the biggest game of the entire year for any defensive player. Wilson put up an absolutely astounding seven shots blocked on the night and was a positive player for his team all night, and really looked like a shining star out there. Even with the great stat line, Wilson's impact can't just be boiled down the numbers due to the fact that he was very important towards the Lions having such a resilient game and controlling the puck so much, and we saw this impact in his play from the penalty kill.

Offensive Catalyst
Rookie and first round selection Luca Veccelli was tonight's major offensive piece and he really shone as a bright light on a night that didn't have a whole lot of offensive playmaking. With a goal, an assist, a shot, and finishing the night as a positive player, we can safely say that Veccelli was able to impact both ends of the ice but really shone in the offensive category. As Veccelli continues to develop in his career we're going to be able to get a lot better of an idea of his strengths and weaknesses, but whatever they are he did everything right tonight.

Tegernako notches first win

A Swiss newspaper was able to get a hold of yound Markus Tegernako, after a stellar performance for his first career SMJHL win.

"Obviously, it feels great to finally be able to scratch that off the list", Tegernako said. "I've been waiting for a while to get my first start, and even if that ended in a loss, it still felt great to be on the ice, to get a real feel for the league after a few weeks of practice. I wanted to show my teammates that I could be relied on, and with such a performance, I think I proved it!"

How many more times can we expect to see you play? "Well you'd have to ask my coach, not me!", Tegernako replied, chuckling. "I'd like to be able to play more than the mandatory minimum for backup goalies, but if it's gonna be six games, I have to make those six games count. I can't let the boys down."

A summary of the second and third period.

Both Lethbridge and Montreal forget how to play defense. Infact the Militia allowed the Lions to shoot at Mike Hunt for twenty times this period. We have no idea how, but he managed to stop all of these shots. On the other hand the Militia is also firing a lot on Tegernako who plays his third game of the season, but he is also unbeatable as he stops all eleven shots fired against him.
In the third period the shooting totals calm down a bit as Militia fires twelve at Tegernako and Hunt receives nine shots against him. But this goaltender battle of the last periods was already settled in the first, so the Lions take home the win here in this battle of the goaltenders.

This game might as well have been twenty minutes long for the Militia, it may have even appeared better for them despite the three to one loss suffered at the hands of the Lions. The only notable contributions by the Militia after the first period was their penalties between the second and third periods, three power kills that they somehow succeeded at. The Militia would need to run extra laps at the next set of practices thanks to the lack of discipline displayed by the team on the ice. Defense was a foreign concept to the Militia, thank god for Mike Hunt who managed to save 39 of 42 shots blasted at the Montreal net.
