S54 WFT #2 - Family Rivalry

The Ball family have been an absolute blast to hang out with for Kalashnikov. Old man Kristaps on the Balitmore Platoon is a hoot and still knows how to rage despite the grey hair on the head and in the beard. His son Victor clearly is from the same line and has shown Valentin a few new "party tricks". The Ball family knows how to party, that much is for sure.

At the risk of possibly retconning some previous task over the past year and a half-ish, I am deciding that Slip McScruff was an only child. He was a rather tall child who was picked on for his geeky interests. He spent many nights and weekends alone with his hobbies and interests, no siblings to guide his interests any which way. He got tough by defending himself at school from bullies. Now he bullies people on the ice.

Matthew Forrester was an only child in a town in the central belt of Scotland - a place not typically known for being a hotbed for ice hockey talent. A lot of kids chose football and rugby over a trip to the local hockey arena to give the sport a chance. Because of this, Matthew always dreamed he would have a sibling with which he could improve his game and compete with throughout their career. In the end, he would have to settle for his North American counterparts in the future.

Just because I am writing this, it would have to be the Manius Family because an amazing user created them. Big and Lil have won challenge cups, won awards and Lil Manius was vote league MVP by the FHM program last season (or so I want told) so how can I be wrong.

Corey Kennedy, does have siblings who play hockey. However, they are much younger than him. He has a sister who he names his dog after, Saoirse who plays womens hockey in Ireland and another brother who will probably play when he grows up, he is very young.

Alex has a big brother who he adores quite a bit which is replicated the other way around. Alex also rarely misses an opportunity to mention Eduard who was once picked #2 in the S31 SHL entry draft by the Buffalo Stampede and was someone that the media had quite the hopes for but didn't develop into a huge star in the SHL. Eduard showed Alex that talent only matters to a certain extend. To be a SHL Hofer you need the talent as well as the work ethic to keep improving and condition your body once father time takes away your physical tools.

For this I wanted to a bit of a comparison between a few of the prevalent families so let’s get right into it.

McZehrl Family

Chris-McZehrl has not only created one, but two hall of fame players.  Combined, this family was named 1st All-Star seven times, has won the Ron Mexico twice and been nominated for it five times in total.  With six Challenge Cup wins between all of them and a whole host of other awards it is really hard to argue against the McZerhrl family being the top family in the SHL of all time.  VLAD McZerhrl was an award winner nine times on his own which is fantastic.  He also holds the record for most goals during what is known as the SHL’s Realism Era, scoring 38 goals in S34.  VLAD is 31st all-time in scoring, 17th all-time in goals.  Chris McZehrl is 18th all-time in scoring, 20th all-time in goals, and 27th all-time in assists.  He also is 4th all-time in fights won.  An even more interesting stat is that both Chris and VLAD finished their careers with exactly 10 hat tricks each, good for a tie at 5th best all-time in the SHL.  As I said before, the huge stat lines by the McZehrl family really drive home the point that this is the best family of all-time.  What remains to be seen is if other families can catch up, such as the Smeb family, many of which are currently entering their peak seasons.

Wong Family

Benjamin Wong – Right Wing - HOF
Games Played: 645
Goals: 296

Shutouts: 46

Nathan Wong – Center
Games Played: 577

Gabriel Wong – Right Wing

So I was drafted to the Platoon at the very tail end of Wongy’s most recent player, so this was nice to get to know the history of Gabriel and his better players.  Wongy had 3 great players and they have all been very successful.  His brother had nowhere near the level of activity, but still had a lengthy career and managed to win a Challenge Cup, putting the total between these players at seven cups.  Wongy’s first two players both made the Hall of Fame and won several awards in this span.  Hunter Wong is listed as second all-time in wins and shutouts in the SHL record book, but these may be out of date.  Benjamin Wong is on the top 100 all-time list for goals, assists, and points, but is not very high on the list overall.  Therefore, I rank the Wong family highly, but not quite at number one.

Aittokallio Family

Jakub Aittokallio – Goaltender - HOF
Games Played: 709
Wins: 402
Losses: 240
Overtime Losses: 65
Save Percentage: .905
Goals Against Average: 2.42
Shutouts: 53

Jason Aittokallio – Goaltender
Games Played: 429
Wins: 208
Losses: 185
Overtime Losses: 36
Save Percentage: .907
Goals Against Average: 2.96
Shutouts: 21

Jax Aittokallio - Center
Games Played: 500
Goals: 172
Assists: 204
Points: 376
Shots: 1555
Hits: 263
Shots Blocked: 148

Not many users have played as goalie multiple times, but JayWhy has created as one twice.  His first player was the first ever goalie to win the Ron Mexico Trophy in S15, a season that saw him win a host of awards.  Jakub Aittokallio is listed as the all-time goalie wins leader and the all-time shutout leader.  The Aittokallio family has won the Challenge Cup six times, tied with a few others on this list.  Both of the goalies were playoff beasts, with both appearing on the top 15 win percentage list and Jakub finishing 2nd all-time in playoff wins.  I also think it's important to note that of the three families I'm listing, this is the only one to be a current General Manager and that boosts his ranking immensely in my view since it's fairly hard to keep on top of your player as well as other users. Jax Aittokallio has had a solid career so far, has a recent cup win, and if he fights regression, he could end up on the top 100 scoring lists, especially with the switch to FHM.  Until then, I think he is firmly in top few families, but not quite at the top yet.

Samat Beibitzhanov has 3 siblings, two brothers and a sister. All three played hockey at various times but none other than Samat really stuck with the game. The family's oldest is in the armed forces, and his younger brother and sister are attending university.

I am very biased when it comes to this but I would have to support my own family, the Scherbluk bro’s. One of the best defenders to ever play the game along with one of the most consistent forwards of the era (12 seasons straight of 40+ points or more).

Igor Volkov grew up as an only child, although this was not intended to be the case. Igor's mother was hoping to have a large family, although a series of incidents resulted in Igor being the only child who survived past the age of 18 months. Despite Igor growing up in Russia, he never had exposure to hockey, coming from a somewhat poor family. Igor's father knew the value of a good education, having grown up in the Brezhnev era of the Soviet Union. The Soviet educational system at the time was very poor, producing only mediocre schoolchildren who were not supposed to challenge the status quo. As he was later forced to educate himself, Igor's father did not want his son to end up that way. As a result, Igor was spoiled with knowledge. His father read him many books about the natural world, mathematics, and chemistry. He also taught Igor how to write the Russian language properly, although Igor's cursive writing was more haphazard than most students. Igor took a natural liking to chemistry and astronomy, and soon even outperformed his teachers in those subjects. He was later placed in a program for gifted students, which accelerated his studies. This program eventually led him into university to become a chemist, but that is beside the point.

Igor never played hockey as a child, only getting into the sport as a teenager with some of his close friends from school. Despite technically being informal and friendly games, Igor dominated with his very aggressive play style, which was noticed by Russian recruiters. After some training in the English language, this eventually led him into the SHL in North America.

As for what Igor's parents think, they think that Igor went beyond their expectations and is leading a very successful life. Sometimes they watch Igor play on their "new" color television from 2013. Igor occasionally sends some of his money home to Russia to support his family, and he wouldn't have grown up any other way.

Alex LIght's brother went into motorsports so there never was the rivalry between the two of them. Chances are that one day Light's son will join the league, should he be interested in professional hockey. This would make for an interesting family rivalry should that happen.

Jukka has a two older brothers and a younger brother, who all played hockey. His two older brothers never ended up being able to make it to the SHL or even the J, because they were always too focused on gooning it up rather than improving their game, a trait they no doubt picked up while bullying Jukka on the backyard rink every winter. To keep the older brother bullying trend alive, Jukka would stick his younger brother in net to practice his clapper, but as a result his brother became quite the talented tender, and is looking to break into the pro scene himself in the next few years.
