Falcons Detroit Falcons vs  Armada Anchorage Armada

Game Link

Period 1:
This matchup started off relatively quiet. No real action for the first 16 minutes of the game aside from some minor penalties that were all killed off. Just as Anchorage finished killing off Kalevi Karhunen’s hooking penalty Joe Kerr finds a pass from Johnny Sins and blasts it into the back of the net past Emiko Spector for his first of the season, giving Anchorage the lead. Just as we’re about to head back to the locker rooms for a break Espen Knutsen Jr wins a faceoff in the defensive zone and passes it over to Austin Roenick, who carries it all the way to the other end of the ice and manages to beat rookie goaltender Ian Venables. He gives up a goal after facing only 5 shots this period and we head to an intermission all tied up despite Anchorage leading shots 13 to 5.

Period 2:
Getting right back into the action here, Anchorage’s goal scorer Joe Kerr takes a hooking penalty a minute into this period. On the powerplay Detroit’s Jagger Fouquette finds the back of the net assisted by Raino Kyllonen and Travis Bitties. Joe Kerr givith, and Joe Kerr taketh away, it would seem. Two minutes into the second and Detroit now have the lead! Fast forward 5 more minutes and Austin Roenick finds his mark once more and scores his second goal of the night, assisted once more by Espen Knutsen Jr as well as Savoli Tankovic. Anchorage, sensing that they were in trouble now, decide to swap out goaltenders. Ian Venables gets called to the bench and Colt Beckett is in between the pipes now. Venables stopped 10 of 13 shots. The swap seemed to be effective for Anchorage, as no more goals were given up for the rest of the period and we finish this one up with Anchorage killing off Augustus Wang’s high sticking minor before heading to another break. Detroit’s lead in this period can certainly be ascribed to their increased shot volume on the rookie goaltender.

Period 3:
Anchorage start off the final period shorthanded for 11 seconds, rolling over from the previous period. All in all the remainder of this game is relatively quiet. Two penalties taken by Detroit and one by Anchorage, all killed off. Just as we’re about to close this game out Detroit find one last offensive rush. Espen Knutsen Jr finds the back of the net for his third of the season and his third point of the night, beating Cole Beckett on the last shot he would face tonight. The remaining 40 seconds tick down and the game ends.

Detroit win 4 goals to 1 despite being outshot 31 to 28. Detroit’s penalty kill came up big tonight, stopping all 5 of the power play chances Anchorage had. The big difference maker tonight looks like special teams to me. Anchorage calling in the backup seemed to help somewhat as Beckett stopped 14 of 15 shots he faced, however the damage had already been done and Anchorage was simply unable to beat Emiko Spector.

Dead Weight
Ian Venables has lost this game for his team. After playing less than half the game, Venables managed to kick out 5 dangerous rebounds into the slot. Three of those rebounds got picked up by Detroit fowards and turned into secondary scoring opportunities. This has been a well-documented deficiency in Venables' game for long enough, there's no excuse for his continued poor execution. Anchorage management was right to pull him, and if you ask me, they should have done it much sooner. I wouldn't give Venables another start unless he could prove to me that he has his rebound control issues under control.

Oh Captain My Crap-tain
Another disappointing performance for the Anchorage Armada came from captain and defensive veteran Darnell Johnson. My stat sheet says that Johnson played 17 minutes tonight, but if you ask me I barely saw him out there at all. He was all but invisible. He managed to rack up a -2 on the night, with 2 hits and 1 shot block. If this is what Johnson calls on-ice leadership, I think it's time for the Armada to jump overboard. If Johnson wants to compete in this league at the level Anchorage needs from him, he needs to bend his knees, square his shoulders, and get physical. The few times I noticed him on the ice he was either getting pushed off the puck, or icing the it of out fear. Not what I'd expect from someone of his caliber and reputation.

Power Pray
The Anchorage Armada power play failed to show up for the game again. On five attempts, the unit barely managed to generate any offense, with a combined total of 7 shots that made it to the net across the 5 power play attempts. On the first one, at just 2 minutes into the game, the Armada power play managed to take a single shot, which missed the net. The second attempt, at around halfway in the first period, saw 6 shots taken. 3 of them were on target. The third powerplay attempt had 7 shots taken, 3 of which were on target. The 4th attempt had a single shot, on net, and the 5th had no time in the offensive zone at all. What a disgrace.

A Tale of Two Goalies

Anyone will say it - being a rookie goaltender in the SMJHL is not a walk in the park. Ian Venables has learnt it the old-fashioned way tonight, after being pulled for the second time in as many outings against the Falcons. Although the young man seemed hard on himself in the post-game interviews, his goaltending partner Colt Beckett can also attest to Detroit's strength, having surrendered them 3 goals on 6 shots just two games ago. These are the kinds of games that stick with you, and make you a better player - and, hopefully, a better person. I'm certain the Armada's rookie netminder will want to exact revenge on the Falcons later this season.

On the other side, Tampa Bay draftee Emiko Spector is stealing games left and right for the Detroit Falcons, improving his record to 7-2-0 to start the season. He has given up only 4 goals in the last three games, and he shows no signs of stopping, just like the rest of his team. Even this early in the season, the question is - who will stop the Detroit juggernaut this year?

Analysis of Rookie Defensemen Performance

Analysis Anchorage Defensemen

Statistically, neither of these defensemen really helped the team offensively with a total of 0 points and that showed on the ice with the team struggles for Anchorage. Wang played 18 minutes which is a bit lower than his average but not completely abnormal. Interesting note here is the minutes being played by these two rookies is on par with some of their veteran teammates. Wang took one shot, had a single hit and blocked two of Detroit’s attempts. Wang also took a high sticking penalty this game, a lazy penalty for this level of play. He needs to be in more control over his stick on the ice. Michaud seems to have been more of a hindrance to his teams performance than an asset tonight, being on the ice for two goals allowed out of four. Defensively with him being the type of player he is, this needs to be much better. His ice time is on par to where it has typically been during the season. He also was on the PK tonight a role that we see him taking a larger role in as the season progresses. He did have two blocked shots, but that did not help the team as much as he likely would have hoped.

Analysis of Detroit Defensemen

Magoon really did not play a role in the game tonight. Coming off the bench as a PK specialist while another man was in the box was the only ice time he saw tonight. Detroit is likely keeping him held behind some of their stronger defensemen and that appeared to work tonight. We will see how this goes during the remainder of the season.

Overall Analysis
Since Anchorage was not really in the game and Magoon didn’t really play, it’s tough to call which teams rookies on the blue line performed better. Anchorage might have this on virtue of them actually getting ice time, however they didn’t play that large of a positive role in the team tonight.

Analysis of Rookie Forwards

Anchorage: Two rookies seems to be getting more ice time than the rest those being Bishoff and Petrikov. Petrikov did his best tonight to help his team score, but the puck would not find the back of the net on any of his 3 shots. Bishoff did not do much better and really lacked for even trying to hit the net 1 shot. The remainder of the rookies did no better.

Detroit: This is seeming like a normal this with detroit to not play their rookies with that rookie line getting only 7 minutes of ice time and allwoing the only goal for anchorage in this span.

Overall: In a game this lopsided tough not to go with Detroit winning out here this evening. Although their rookies didnt do that much they were not a liability on the ice like some of the Anchorage guys were.

Analysis of Rookie Goalies

Budgie did himself no favors tonight, allowing 3 in 13 and getting yanked midway through the second. Anchorage has an aggressive pulling strategy so this is par for the course for this roster, but not great for the rookies confidence.

Detroit does not have a rookie goalie and as such no rookie analysis is available.

Overall: Kinda have to give this to DET again here. No rookies played but Venables hurt his team more than he helped thus I gave him a negative rating for this game. Lets hope he can improve in the future.

Third Comment: 184 words

Detroit once again prove that stats don’t matter and the fact that they are dominant on the penalty kill. Of 5 attempts they had a 100% success rate shutting down Anchorage though they themselves only had a 25% success rate on the power play of four attempts. Detroit did play a much more physical game with 19 hits in comparison to Anchorage’s 9 hits. Anchorage eked out some success with 44 faceoffs won in comparison to 43 by Detroit. The real differences are Anchorage blocked 12 shots compared to Detroit’s 9 and Detroit have 10 penalty minutes compared to 8 for Anchorage. Once again Detroit managed to succeed with far less shots on net but with a much higher success rate. Detroit is proving that their much more conservative playstyle doesn’t matter as their dominance in skill is overshadowing everyone else on the ice even when completely outplayed on any other aspect of the ice they can score with less attempts compared to any other team on the ice making them a dangerous team to face and a real contender to win this season.

When the Game Got Away

The Anchorage Armada lost this game 4-1. They nearly went into the 2nd period with the lead, but at the end of the 1st period they gave up a goal that tied up the game. 40 seconds away from heading to intermission with the lead, they give up the goal, and the Falcons get to start the game fresh in the 2nd period, game even. The Armada frustrated when the 2nd period started, took a penalty just a minute in, and the Falcons scored a powerplay goal to take the lead just 2 minutes into the 2nd, the goal that would eventually be the game winner. The Falcons added another goal 5 minutes later to make it a 2 goal lead. If the Armada can hang on for the last 40 seconds of the 1st, they can start the 2nd with the lead, and maybe they don't take a dumb penalty.

Despite the scoreboard, the statistics of this game indicate some sort of evenness or close skill proximity between the Detroit Falcons and the Anchorage Armada. The Power Plays were 1/4 and 0/5 respectively, 43 to 44 on faceoff wins, 9 to 12 on blocked shots, 10 to 8 on penalty minutes total, and so the question is, what made the difference? The only large outlier between the two teams, besides actual goals, was Detroit's 19 hits to Anchorage's 9. And yet, even that seems misleading, as no hits actual resulted directly in goals soon after their hit. Many of the hits that had goals "soon" after featured either a full minute of play to the next goal scored or some sort of reset thanks to a penalty, icing, offsides, or some similar event. Perhaps this is just the true definition of outplayed, as demonstrated by Detroit?
