S68 PT #1: Knuckle Sandwich Due: November 27th @ 11:59 PM (PST
(This post was last modified: 11-27-2022, 11:24 PM by bbjygm. Edited 2 times in total.)

Hodor did not start out as a fighter, but his experience so far with hockey has shown him that he certainly can excel at it if he wishes to. He is a gentle giant at heart, but he is also fairly protective of his family. Pose a threat to his team and he will unleash whatever wrath he's buried deep down on you with unbridled strength. Hodor's most memorable fight was against a squirrel. After one of the teams away games, the team went to a local burger joint and decided to eat outside. They were all hungry and needed to refuel to get ready for a game the next day, so when a squirrel jumped on the table and threatened to interrupt the food schedule of one of Hodor's teammates, he went ballistic. There were crushed tables and ripped up trees from the tussle that Hodor and squirrel had, and though the squirrel got away it really drove the message home to the local wildlife to leave their food alone.

Well for me my favorite team In the nhl is the Philadelphia flyers who have a deep history for that part of the game unfortunately I wasnt born in that era but my father remembers it and is why he has been a life long flyers fan turning me into a life long flyers fan the history of fighting is a deep one that I think the game benefits on maybe there isnt nearly as much fighting as there was back in the day and I think that is ok too take the pointless fighting out of the sport dont make the sport we love a circus of goons although it did help my favorite team with a couple cups but I think hockey now is too fast for that type of goon like squad put together like the board street bullies where the only player they had was good goalie in Parent and Clarke no really else but alot of tough mofos with alot of balls they dont make em that way anymore

Player Prompt:
As a goalie, there are really only three scenarios that would lead me to fight. The first would be a skater on the opposing team taking some kind of cheap shot at me. It would have to be pretty bad (more than just a ice spray or a hand slash), but in all honesty, anyone who does something like that is going to be getting worked up by my teammates before I'd have the chance. So that's the least likely scenario. The next scenario would be if the opposing goalie takes liberties with my teammates while they're already engaged with opposing skaters. Goalies tend to stay out of the scuffles, and for good reason: we're not very mobile, and player vs goalie fights pretty heavily favor the skater (as long as the goalie fights clean). Skaters tend to respect that, so if the goalie thinks they can get some free shots in, I'll be obliged to defend my teammates. But again, this isn't super common either. The most likely reason I'd get into a fight is this: all ten skaters are locked up, I look down the ice at the opposing goalie, with whom I likely have a good relationship with, they give me a nod, I shrug, and we decide to drop 'em. Why? For fun. We'll be throwing real punches, but most won't connect, and we'll stop once we've had our fill. We don't get to get into the action often, so it's fun when we can.

Quote:HOCKEY PROMPT- I like asking these more broad hockey questions too, so if you don't want to talk about your player let's just talk about the game in general!

Written Task:  What are your thoughts on fighting in hockey? It's definitely a lot less common these days, do you think that's a good thing? Do you think it has a place in the game, or that it's overdue to disappear entirely? Maybe you wish it happened more often? In your opinion, what circumstances justify a hockey fight? Specific things? Any time you want for entertainment's sake? Tell me your thoughts! (150+ words)

I do not mind fighting in hockey, I like that it exists. I will say that of course it has its time and place, because sometimes you do not want to take an unnecessary penalty in a close game or to a team that has a top powerplay unit that is on fire. I do think times like mentioned in the other prompt are necessary, like being down by a bunch and wanting to send a message to let’s say an inter-division rival that the next time you square off it will be grittier, and they better be prepared, as well as a message to the next opponents and the league. I think that unless there is like a bad penalty to one of your teammates, or something that is uncalled for then have at it. I believe if it is not something like that and it's too like to send a message or settle beef, both players have to agree to drop the gloves for a spirited bout. As for me in real life and for my player, we are not going to be a part of a sending a message or friendly bout and will be one of the players trying to pull off opponents and maybe teammates to make it fair for the ones that want to square up to have equal measures.

I personally LOVE fighting in hockey. I think it sets a bad example for kids, puts players at risk, and is a huge liability issue for players and teams alike, but it adds another wrinkle to the game that we don't see in most other mainstream sports. To see players reacting to the game and lashing out or dropping the gloves to try to build some hype and momentum for their team is awesome. Instances that would be cause for a fight are excessive showboating, trash talk before the game in the media, cheap shots against a teammate, or simply a matchup of two of the most badass players in the league trying to see who can come out on top. The unbridled adrenaline rush when you're sitting in the stands and see two players drop the gloves is incredible. It makes you forget about the hockey game for a minute and enjoy the spectacle that is in-game fighting.

I'm pretty split on the two sides, I can see both easily. On one hand, fighting has been part of hockey for ever, and it is what differences it from other common north american sports. They are supposed to help a team fire up, or to deal with someone that did something they should not to one of your teammates so you step up for them. In that sense, I do think it is respectable. If there would be reasons for keeping them, it would be for that. i do not really care about the entertainment value, if people want to watch people fight go watch MMA or some shit. But on the other hand, some fights are just unnecessary and cause serious injuries that could be totally avoided. It also makes this sentiment that you must fight if someone challenges you, regardless of if you are a fighter or not. And when you fight with little experience, that is where the big injuries comes. And it sucks to get injured in something like this that is pretty much pointless.

The hockey players that come out of Ukraine are tough MF’s (you know what that means). Looking through SHL history Boris “The Beast” Poroshenko was one of the toughest the SHL has ever seen. The man was a wrecking ball and carried the Ukrainian strength on the ice. Oles Kobliska is the exact same breed! While he didn’t break out of his physical cage like Boris, Oles can be called on to put an opponent in his place. The Ukrainians don’t mess around and who do you think is Oles strength training coach? None other than Boris. His routines include punching through brick walls, wrestling bears and pushing real cars all by himself. In order to be the toughest, you have to have a program so unique that only the strongest can do it.

Rumour has it in Ukraine Oles accidentally killed someone in a fist fight during a game. Thankfully the police “lost the file” of the nations brightest superstar and therefore he was able to get a visa to come over to north America

Player Prompt

Liam Logger could be the man for the job if necessary, you see, since getting his first opportunity away from the outdoor rink behind his house, Liam Logger has felt he owes it all to every team that gives him a shot and so he's willing to do just about anything for the team while he's on the ice. This wouldn't be his first scrap however, last season he had a couple of fights and he actually won his very first ever fight in the SMJHL. Since Liam Logger feels like he owes everything for the team he'd gladly go out there and punch a guy silly for the sake of motivation of the rest of the team, in fact, he's even gotten some of the older player on his team to give him fighting tips, such as when to jab and when to really swing and when to get your head of of the way of another players punch. Of course he's not fighting with his teammates but he's taking tips.

Hockey prompt:

Fighting is definetly an aspect of hockey that makes it different than almost all other professional sports. Boxing and MMA are the only others that allow their participants to go ham at punching the other. I use to believe that fighting was absolutely necessary and that any other opinion was wrong. I have since moved away from that opinion and think that the NHL should prevent as much fighting as possible. I'm sure you're wondering what changed my opinion. It's same as dangerous hits. They are great one time entertainment but frequently have little to no impact other than potentially hurting others. I think of all the fighters who have been found to have CTE or died of drug addiction. It's just so hard to enjoy now knowing the impact on the people involves lives just for some additional entertainment. I also now really enjoy skilled and fast hockey. Fighters and fighting tend to be less skilled, take away a spot from someone who could potentially add more, and take time to sort out penalties. It's a hard pill to swallow because as a young Penguins fan, I still remember Max Talbot baiting Carcillo to a fight and then shhhhing the crowd in Philly. It was an awesome moment but these awesome moments shouldn't be at the well-being of others.

I have mixed opinions on fighting in hockey. As someone who grew up as a skilled player, I disliked the fighting in hockey. I did not see the point, and felt it was taking away from another skilled players chance to play. Looking at it now, I think a fighter should hold one spot on each team. One, momentum switches are real when it comes to a fight. Win or loss it doesn't matter. It still slows down the game and basically pushes a reset button. The other reason is it prevents teams from taking liberties on your superstar players. They are less likely to take a run at them if they know they are going to have to answer the bell. Fighting definitely has its place in the NHL. If you can be a player like I hate to say this, but Tom Wilson. He will fight, and can also put up 50+ points a year for your team. That is the ideal type of goon. You are going to see them fade out more and more. The game is evolving, and fighters just cannot keep up with the game.

HOCKEY PROMPT

I firmly believe that fighting in hockey belongs to a past era and has no place in today's game. Gone are the days of a player whose only purpose is to fight and they have no business in the league. Most fights these days are completely unecessary and add nothing to the game, except entertain the few people who still like them. A minority of fights end with an injury, but that's such a dumb way to get injured that if I were a general manager or a head coach, I'd be beyond pissed if one of my players gets injured in a fight. This is not an era were goalie wore thin pads and no masks and players played without helmets. Hockey has changed and there's no place for fights in today's game.More and more leagues are banning fights entirely and the quality of play and the entertainment value hasn't changed, so I don't see why the NHL couldn't follow in these footsteps.

Hockey Prompt
Fighting has diminished in hockey as a hole due to a variety of changes to the rules that have lowered more aggressive and physical play such as obstruction penalties (hooking, holding, etc.) which have allowed smaller and lighter players to excel (Patrick Kane for example, who is only 5'10".) I do not have a problem with fighting in hockey as it is much less dangerous than moment to moment play.  Players fighting is much different to combat sports such as boxing or MMA as players who fight are both on skates and usually being grabbed by the other player they are fighting.  These two factors make the punches much less effective as the skates hamper the ability to plant your feet and use your entire body (hip rotation eg) in the punch.  I think a bigger problem with fighting is that it delays the game a significant amount, especially if teams get in full on scrums.  If this were to become egregious the referees could get more liberal in their use of handing out penalties, otherwise I am ambivalent.
