S52 PT #3 - What's Your Fantasy?

Written Option #2: What off-ice stats do you think should be added to a fantasy SHL league? Maybe a fantasy updaters team where you get points for how many updates your updaters put in in a season. Number of swears said in Discord per week. Get creative - something based around the user, not the player. (150 words min.)

One off-ice attribute I'd love to see is "Kindness". As in - who has the best interactions with the fans? Who donates the most money and/or time to the community? Who makes the most coffee runs before the morning skates? Who helps Igor tie his skates the most often? Okay, that last one may be more related to the Chiefs, but you get the idea. I feel like this stat would be used for contract negotiations and contract retention. Players with a higher Kindness stat are seeing the team tend towards their side more often in contract negotiations. It would also affect team morale if a player with high Kindness is traded away or let go to free agency.

Now, it may not really work in a simulation league like ours, since the contract negotiations and morale aspects don't really apply, but I still thought it was a neat idea, and a bit different than the "Professionalism" stat we see in FHM currently.

FHM has a lot of things, but one thing I'd like to see added is a statistic for "huggability". After all, teammates enjoy hugs, so why not have a statistic for the likelihood that the player enjoys hugs? This will surely boost team morale and not lead to as many players leaving their team because HUGZZZ. WHO DOESN'T LIKE HUGZZZ?!?!?! More TPE, more hugs. This will motivate players to increase their TPE so they can be a more huggable player.

As for my second thing, an off-ice stat I'd like to see for HO is "number of complaints made this month". For every complaint made against an HO member, they lose one TPE. If someone complains 753 times, they lose 753 TPE. This is a brilliant system to avoid abuse by HO! What could possibly go wrong? This is the perfect system to avoid abuse by... oh my - 150 words!

In terms of adding stats to the SHL fantasy, I think the general consensus is in and we need to include powerplay points. Special teams are essential to the game of hockey and can really make or break a game, and I think it would be a great idea to include the powerplay or penalty kill in all facets of fantasy. I really enjoy being a part of NHL fantasy leagues that include those stats because it makes drafting and building a team all the more interesting and fun. It adds a level of difficulty and one that can really pay off. The downside of course is how random it can be and maybe the random factor will be too much? But I think it would be worth investigating and see if it’s a viable option. Other than that I saw someone mention goals against average and I one hundred percent agree with that. Bring on the stats, I want them all.

Thank you for the Ludacris reference, and all that he stands for. In terms of "off-ice" stats, there are many interesting measurables (TJ Oshie chose number 77 after his number of notches), but team dinners missed, last-guy-in-the-locker-room, pranks pulled, games of two-touch won, are things that work for real life, but not for the SHL. For our needs, i picture a "User Fantasy" league, where you want to draft SHL users, and less their players. Points could be things like "comments posted" "threads started" "TPE earned" "graphic media posted" and things of that nature. users would be incentivized to be more active, and their could still be the equivalent of "most hits" bonuses for "most comments all season". in fact, this could take place exclusively after the regular season ends and before the next season begins, to give the fantasy degenerates an extra edge to research and bet on.

I think that the best fantasy statistic that could be added to SHL fantasy would be number of Discord pings per season. We all know that special someone in our team locker room, or in the shl server who is overly aggressive with pings. Whether it is because they are extremely excited to share the latest available point task, or to notify you of some news going on around the world, or whether it is even about another sim league. I think that Lee, our fearless leader in Buffalo, would definitely be a contender to lead the entire SHL in number of Discord pings. He is always around, sharing news, bragging about his elite future Hall of Famer NSFL defensive lineman, Grayson Kuusela, and is overall a nice asset to have. I certainly do not get annoyed when I get a ping from Lee whereas I get super angry if I get a ping from speculadora.

There is a lot of balancing that needs to be done for Fantasy, especially with a change in how the sim engine will work. We are already talking about adjusting what each stat scores as, so we have to make sure we get it right. Not too slanted towards offensive players and nothing too crazy for those physical beasts either. Some middle ground is what we should look at and maybe add more definition to each position.

In FHM will teams be required to have more than one goalie playing? IE no more 44 start starting goalies? How will stamina and that sort factor in? Should we be able to draft goaltenders individually? I think we should stick to 'Team' selections for goalies to keep things interesting but this me something to explore.

I think the league needs to do more testing on 'legitimate' players as well, alongside their current tests of having terrible teams and what not. I see a lot of these teams having players that just score, and if one line is clicking they will just out produce everyone else. We obviously want some variety and I feel like we should NOT nerf the hits score for physicality, as I believe that forwards will lean more towards non physical 2 way play which will factor in GA/TAs and whatnot to 'min-max'.

Will the power forward die out? Probably.

Will fantasy still give them value? We will have to wait and see.

Personally, I think we should see A LOT more stats added to SHL fantasy. For instance, why does nobody track how many times you trip and fall over the blueline. We absolutely, 100% should know who the clumsiest mother fuckers in the league are. Secondly of all, I am of the firmest opinion that we should track amount of goaltender movement in a game in the centimeter metric. I want to know who the most proactive, coast to coast, double pad stacking sons of guns in the league are because they make hockey just that much more exciting. Lastly or perhaps thirdly, depending on your perspective, I think we should track number of shots missing the net. The fact we can't see how inaccurate some of these defenseman are is protecting the weak and I'd love to cull the herd. These are in my opinion, the smartest changes we can add to the sim engine to make the SHL's understanding of who's awesome and who's not more crystal clear.

I’ve always been a proponent for the inclusion of negative fantasy points being a thing. By that I mean that we start using negative stats, such as penalty minutes and personal plus/minus in the equation.

Let’s start with the easy one, plus/minus is a very simple metric that can be added to a player’s fantasy totals. It can stay as a 1:1 ratio. Now people do say it’s a metric for team success but ultimately, the same can be said for fantasy. You are more likely to pick players from a successful team because hey… those teams tend to score more.

Penalty minutes as a fantasy metric is very interesting. You can subtract the PIMs either per penalty taken (1 for minor, 3 for major, 5 for ejections) or just go straight up my total penalty minutes. It would make for interesting choices as to whom you pick up as some high point producing players do take high penalties.

Seeing as stats will be extrapolated in franchise hockey manager I would like to see more of the in depth statistics taken into account. From a defenseman perspective things like give aways, take aways and the difference in stick and body checking to be noted. If you really wanted to make things more complex then you could add negative modifiers for things like penalty minutes and the ice time a player gets so that it would give players lower down the line up a more even playing field in terms of earning points.

Not specifically stat related but maybe enforcing a complete line up, two wingers, a centre, two defensemen and a goalie could add a bit of variety and make it so that people need to think a bit more about structuring their fantasy team rather than just picking the best player available.

Plus minus is an arbitrary stat and I don't think that it should be added.

There's a couple different fantasy stats I would like to see added into the fantasy tracker. The first would be PIMS as a positive, many real life leagues use PIMS and the way I look at it, our fantasy is already pretty well a bangers league and I feel like ading PIMS into the equation would be a great addition. The other stats I would like to see added are special teams points. I think a goal or assist on the power play or penalty kill should be worth mire then an even strength goal. You should be rewarded for grabbing a power play quarterback or a penalty kill specialist. I think adding both of these would bring us more in line to real life fantasy leagues. In saying thst though, it's not like I am unhappy with the way fantasy is scored now as I think it is great. I just think these stats would add to the depth of SHL fantasy.

I would argue that SHL fantasy is perfect just the way it is, but it feels like you want me to actually pick something. I'm sure many will suggest the addition of takeaways, but I'm also going to throw that out as my choice. One thing I've never liked in fantasy hockey is the addition of negative stats (i.e PIM) to a league, so I' be wary of adding new stats to SHL fantasy just for the sake of it. Another consideration when changing the tracked stats of a fantasy league, is that many stats are related, so adding something like PPP when we already award points for G and A. Takeaways are a good stat to add because it can give more value to lower scoring players, without doubling up the fantasy points of a single incident (like scoring a goal and getting points in two categories). If the league wants to make changes to the fantasy system in the SHL, then now is the time (or well this offseason) with the FHM switch looming and many other changes going on, but if it were up to me there would be no changes at all.

There are some player templates that do not get any love in SHL. One of them are the grinders. These guys rack up penalty minutes and hits for their teams, but yet are never valued because the fantasy does not count some of these stats. Hits are valued too little currently, and thus, the fantasy has become too one dimensional. Just rack up your attributes in scoring and passing and you will have a great player. As a result, i think hits need to be valued more. In addition, PIM is not currently counted towards fantasy and i think it should. Not in a negative way but positively. Some players rack up penalty minutes for their team. They are the grinders and enforcers and this may give confidence to their teammates. It also makes the fantasy a lot more interesting. Another category that needs to be added to fantasy is faceoffs, this also makes fantasy a lot more diverse. Right now, the system does not favor centers at all. It is one of the hardest build because they have to also focus on faceoffs where everyone else can ignore it. Faceoffs are crucial in real life and winning it can give you that edge in scoring. Thus, faceoff wins should be looked at as well when looking at the fantasy.

Personally, my key priority would be to add a ninja helmet to the game since... well, I don't think that's an option, which disappoints me strongly. Honestly, I don't really care about fantasy data in sports, generally, it feels like something that undermines the interest of fans and even players to some extent over where their allegiances lay. Still, if you really... really wish for me to add some serious two cents, I'd suggest giving some care to the fighting side of things. Originally, when I joined, I actually invested in the fighting skill because I actually thought it'd be pretty funny for a player with the name I use to be a brawler. Granted I eventually was convinced to go the other way with my player, I feel like it'd be fun to have some love for some good ol' fighting. That and I'd have an excuse to invest on it too.

It would be cool if penalty minutes and power play points were added to the SHL fantasy for skaters. There could be a sort of bonus for fights. There should be a slight penalty for losses for goalies to make the worse teams less of real options, and a slight bonus for overtime or shoot out losses because getting a point is good for the team. Overtime is really a coin flip so you should not get punished for losing there. It would be cool if you could get a bonus for a win streak, that would make it very fun to pick up a goalie who is hot and just winning a ton of games. It rewards goalies on teams that are really on a roll and gives an edge to netminders for the stronger teams. Also, if you get two shutouts in a row, you get double the points, three in a row, triple the points and so on. So if you have some ridiculous shutout streak the goalie gets bonuses in fantasy. Overall these changes would just make the fantasy more fun.
