S54 PT #1 - A New Focus
#16

Code:
Player's perspective: What did your coaches ask you to focus on this offseason? Is there anything you're hoping to do better than you did last season? How will you be altering your on-ice play for this season and what did you do in the offseason to prepare you for that?? Are you going to be trying to fit into a new role this season?

The coaches at the Vancouver Whalers team are high end, amazing people that have created a strong team that continuously try to improve what the players should focus on. As a relatively new player who joined the team late last season, I try to improve and follow what the coaches have recommended for me to do. As an offensive player, most of my time was spent honing my Offensive skills rather than my defensive skills. I used to be a player with a mix of each training done but during the off season, I only trained my body and skills for an only offensive play style as our team has a solid goalie and defensive line. I'll try to be a player that can get points and meet the expectations of the coaches. Most of the other players are working just as hard and hopefully, the Vancouver Whalers will make playoffs and go beyond the expectations from other teams and players alike.

Quote:User's perspective: With a season on FHM in the books and a free redistribution gifted by HO for the offseason, what did you decide to change about your player build? Did you drastically change your build from last season? If so, why? Are you going to be trying to fit into a new role this season? What did you learn from last season's pilot run?

Before the start of last season, I submitted an FHM build aimed at being versatile. I wanted Cal to be useful for the team, and I wanted my GMs to be able to effectively use Cal in multiple offensive roles. His best role was the setup man, but counter-attacking forward and playmaker were close and he could even be useful as a sniper, perimeter shooter, speedy forward or dangler. During the season however, it became clear that Cal wasn't going to play in any other role than setup man, although we tried counterattacking forward a few games as well. Therefore, I decided to use the free redistribution to increase the attributes for that role a bit more.
On the other hand, I felt like Cal could've done a little better on the physical/defensive side of the game. Therefore I decided to also raise his checking attribute to ten, to give Cal a bit more of an opportunity to get that puck posession back early in the forecheck and take the game back to where Cal excels on the ice: the offensive zone.

With my redistrubuted build and having reached the 350 cap my team and I have only made some minor adjustments to make sure I'm as effective as I can be through this season. We noticed that last season I did not spend much time passing the puck as a goalie, and I didn't have very many games where I was needing to maintain mental toughness after being scored on, as I rarely allowed high goal totals against in a single game. Lastly we prioritised improving my skills with my glove and blocker over how I was handling the puck. Previously I had created a very balanced build across the board, this new build design has a greater focus on my skills as the backup goalie to help the team in the most effective way possible - when I move into my 425 build I'll be looking to build a player that has more of a focus on being a starter.

The coaches were happy with the performance I put on last season, so more of the same. I know I'm getting a little older and there's young guys on the team aiming to climb the team ladder.
I managed to almost tangent my peak TPE before the off season so I shouldn't have any issues repeating last seasons performance.
As for any changes to the upcoming season? Not really, maybe try to add a little more finess to my shot, it's always been my weak point. Still going to eat a lot of minutes but have limited time in PP/PK, there's just other players that's better suited for power play on the team.
Personal goals for me is to repeat the point per game pace I had last season, maybe even try to beat it. I also want to hit more, everyone knows I got a knack for throwing my body around. That's why they call me the Hippo you know.

Hope for a better season then last, but don't expect it. There's other stars on the team that shines brighter at the moment!

With the first season of Franchise Hockey Manager 6 in the books, I felt pretty good about the experience as a whole. As a result, this meant that I didn't need the free redistribution gifted by HO for the offseason. This meant I didn't have to decide on any changes for my player. Personally, I did not radically alter any attributes myself. Frankly I feel like it will be rare for many people to be radically altering their players as this free redistribution was unexpected. As a result, most people should've already put in a final version last season and not thought they had this safety net for this season. That being the case, I don't believe Weston will be changing to a new role beyond what was already working for the Dragons. I have a very team-first mentality that pushes personal success to create team success as the end goal.

When it came to the offseason, the Rage coaches decided that if Andrej was their #1 PK killer, he should sort of stop being the main cause of them within the team. So, the order was clear - cleaner, more precise, less stupid approach to the game was necessary for the team. Andrej is a defensive defenseman, he is a team player almost by definition because he alone can't really win a game, just help others to win it, so when it came down to trying something for the team, even though he didn't like it he agreed to attempt. His training therefore focused on how to not get penalties more than anything, clean ways to hit people, to take the puck from them through stick work, how to know what the limits are and how to not push them, and hopefully, by the start of this season, Andrej learned at least something and won't post 3rd highest PIMs in the league as a PK killer.

I was on a call with GM Hans Hammersmith over the summer, talking about the past season and the expectations for the upcoming one. He asked me if I would be willing to take on a new role on the ice, leaning away from my pass first mentality and to start shooting the puck more often. I agreed to work on my shooting alp summer and see where it's at come preseason. I got to work with a couple of great coaches back home, and felt like my shot was getting better and better every day. After getting the call to play in the WJC for team USA, I talked to our coaches there about my progress and asked them for any critiques. I worked on a couple things with them, the big one being how to play in front of the net and get those deflections. All the training paid off when I scored a couple of clutch goals in the quarterfinals game. I'm feeling more confident than ever about my game, and expect to see  shots than ever from me this season

I spent my first season in front of the net, trying to pick up rebounds and put them in. It wasn't bad but I definitely struggled to keep my place without getting tossed around. I used my rebuild (and extensive training) to get my physical strength in order. I am still gonna play the game the same way but hopefully I should be a little more solid on my skates this season. I made sure to work on my defense a little bit as well. Even though scoring goals is always my first goal, my bad +/- last season suggests I could be a little better in my own end and hopefully this season I can fix that as I should be among the top players in the SJMHL this year. My shooting percentage was very high last season probably due to my good shot and my typical positioning right in front of the net so I didn't change that working formula much.

Jakob’s coaches ask him to fill very different role this season. I was told to focus on moving to Tampa Bay and going to play for the Barracudas. Obviously, I am the best defender in the league which is why I cost the mighty price of a retired corpse and NOLA also threw in a 3rd round pick. I have gone from considered worst defender on team in New Orleans to the second-best defender in Tampa Bay. This should mean more ice time for Jakob, but who knows. I hope I do. I’ve cut down on penalties after leading the league in PIMs at one point in my SMJHL career and have focused on improving stamina these last few weeks, so I should be ready for plenty of time on ice. I had much fewer blocked shots and hits than I would like last season. I hope on Tampa I will be able to be a bigger part of the roster.

As someone who is still sub 500 TPE, I didn't feel the need for a total revamp as I have far too much room anyways to mold my build into what I want without danger of it assigning some off the wall role/ build. With that in mind still, I took the time to analyze the field and see what defenseman produced the stats I was looking for the most as my end goal. I made a list of the top 12 defenseman who excelled at each general category I wish to emulate, added up the totals for each skill slot and then averaged it out across the board to find trends to which stats were their highest on average to create a list of skills I should be prioritizing as I grow into an SHL level player. The good news is I should have another 2 seasons of juniors play to do that and continue to monitor trends before I go into the deep in for TPE investment and really start to lock down the exact defensive build I want to hopefully generate the success and stats I want for this player. I spent LKS's career trying to be offensive as possible with him morphing into a 2 way D man eventually, and the plan here is to take that and make it a full time goal (2 way).

After a good rookie campaign that ended in the Timber missing the playoffs last year, I stuck around in Maine to try and put in some serious work for this upcoming season. My game is centered around playing stalwart defense and it went well last year, but going into the off season I met with the coaches and they wanted me to spend the off season working on my physicality and offensive game. One of the major issues last season in Maine was a lack of a goal scorer. We were a defensive team and nearly every player had a pass first mentality which clearly doesn’t score a lot of goals. So this off season I spent a huge amount of time at the gym getting stronger to help with puck possession, doing shooting drills, and watching tape of high skill offensive players to learn what looks they use and how they react. I feel like all this has drastically improved my offensive upside going into next year and hopefully it will help the Timber get over the top and back into the playoffs.

The first season of FHM is done and I’m beyond excited for the future of the SHL with a sim engine that actually gives you statistics. The free redistribution was a kind gift but one that I ignored completely. My player is perfectly built. The personification of even point distribution with a gritty edge. I ignored the redistribution and chose to ignore all advice from my coach because I don’t care what the team wants @JNH. I’m my own man building my own player. Someone will realize my genius and I will go to battle for that team. Now the only thing I would consider now that we have one season under our belt is exploring the different “role” options the coach has to pick from. Maybe I’ll try tailoring my build to a specific role in the future. Right now though I’m going to focus on becoming the best face puncher in the SMJHL!
