S57 mPT #1 - Offseason Moves
#76

The best off-season move benefits the Nevada Battleborn and they weren't even the ones to make it. With the Chiefs decision to send down Rock Strongo for another season in the SMJHL, the Battleborn will have a maxed out centre to help out their run to the Four Star Cup. After spending a ton in a trade for him, there was some fear they would only get half a season out of him, but Strongo returns and is looking to bring Nevada it's first championship.

A crucial move for the Seattle Argonauts was making a good selection in the second round of the entry draft since we had previously traded away our first rounder.  Snagging Yanno Rosejac was awesome.  A great LR presence and top 5 earner in his class!

The Toronto-Winnipeg deal was a blockbuster haul to bring the North Stars a true number one defenseman. Adam Barron is at the top of the S50 class which is just now entering their prime. Winnipeg did an amazing job finally restocking their team with picks and a couple of solid prospects and hopefully this youth movement works out solidly for them. While I do think Toronto overpaid by a good amount for Barron, they have now secured their position in the Great Lakes over the next several seasons and while they are likely still another season away from the playoffs, they are set to be a dominant force for probably 5-6 seasons. After trading away Jack Kanoff, this was something they absolutely needed to do and sometimes you just have to overpay to get top talent to get where you need to be.

The next massive deal this offseason was a trade for the first overall pick, something that hadn’t happened since S53. Tampa shopped this pick around for nearly a week ahead of the draft, judging that they should skip this draft and look forward to the future as they must feel they already have an established core. They got tons of value and honestly I’m surprised at how much it ended up being: an S58 1st, S60 1st, and an S60 2nd with the latter of the two picks getting potentially sliding to S61 if S60 is a reddit draft. Generally, teams pay this much for a player in their prime such as Rex Kirkby when he was traded away from the Platoon in S52 and New England certainly overpaid for a guy they liked and need after one of their top prospects went inactive last season. While I think it’s a huge amount to give up for the Wolfpack, they clearly see something in Jonathan Granström who was the clear frontrunner for first overall this season and are willing to take the gamble and move futures in order to be competitive sooner.

My last one is my own team in which the Platoon had a flurry of offseason activity and now have a completely active roster except for the backup goaltender. Personally this is very exciting for me as the team has not had this much activity since I joined it in March and also me knowing that we still have several prospects still waiting in the wings. There has been a lot of talk about the culture of the team, but to me there is nothing better than injecting a team with more active members in the LR and that drives the team more than anything else. There is obviously a ton of work to do still to get the team to be competitive, but it’s the most excited I have been about being a part of Baltimore in a long time.

I think the Colorado Raptors draft class is a very good one and is regarded as such by most people in the league. With a crop of seven good rookies, they're bound for some success in the next few seasons.

The move that stands out to me is Toronto's acquisition of star defenseman Adam Barron.  It definitely hurt seeing him go, but I know he's heading over to a great franchise.  With him helping guard the net in front of legendary Harry Carpet, I think Toronto is poised to make a huge move this season.

One offseason move that stands out is Atlanta Inferno trading up to select Michael Scotch, this young defensemen has a lot of passion and improved tremendously in his own zone throughout his rookie SMJHL season, he will benefit the team once he is called up down the line

Wolfpack's getting that first OA in draft was wild! It's a risky, but smart move, looks like they know what they are doing and it should pay out when the glory comes to this young dude. They needed some freshness in roster, and I think It was great choice.

The best move of the offseason went almost entirely under the radar. Veteran defenseman and all around swell guy Otis B. Driftwood re-signed with the Calgary Dragons for another year at minimum wage. This allows Calgary to maintain access to this veritable font of wisdom, strength and cheap cigars. Such things cannot be measured in a box score. Of course, this being the modern SHL, nothing around here can be measured in a box score.

Hamilton made some moves during the offseason. They traded Jax Duggan to Winnipeg but they were able to replace him by signing Tig Murphy who just won the Defensive defenseman of the year. This is an upgrade for the Steelhawks. I think they are going to win the Challenge Cup this season.

The Toronto North Stars made the excellent decision to move Luffy Richard to defense. With their forward core filled to the brim, they asked their young reclamation pick to make the move to defense ensuring they will get an immediate return on the investment they've put into RIchard. Not only that, they avoid the risk of losing him to free-agency and him spending a fifth year in the SMJHL. Good Job there, Toronto!

The biggest move of this offseason was obviously the huge re-signing of James Ronlain by the Tampa Bay Barracuda. No other team could afford the massive contract that Tampa handed out to him.

I like the moves Edmonton made this offseason. They secured a pair of sub 1k TPE defenders without giving anything up, and managed to secure a 1st for taking on an undesired contract from LA. Up front they didn't change much, but if they can score like they did last season it shouldn't be a significant issue, if at all.

For Toronto, it was trading for Barron. Using draft picks from this draft, that likely would never play for Toronto as Toronto will have a full active roster next season and to get a player of Barron's quality is massive. Toronto needed a Defenseman to help them, and Barron certainly helps massively, maybe even as early as this season but in the future when Toronto should be a force.

Hamilton Steelhawks finally fired Gabe Johnson and I could not be happier about it, I think he was really holding this team back and I'm glad he's not my gm anymore. I hate Gabe.

To me the biggest move in the offseason was by by the wolfpack to gain the first overall pick in the draft. Jonathan Granstrom is going to be quite the star and is super interested in getting involved in the league. I think that any team that could have made that move wouldn’t have regretted it.
