S80 PT #3: Winter Classic Due: Sunday, January 5th @ 11:59 PM PST

Written 2:

If Tom Pedersen weren’t a hockey player, he’d likely take up cross-country skiing, a quintessential Norwegian winter sport. Cross-country skiing aligns well with his stamina and endurance training from hockey, allowing him to channel his energy into gliding across snowy landscapes. It’s a sport that values both physical strength and mental grit. Both qualities Pedersen has in abundance.
Additionally, in an alternative reality, ski jumping might capture his adventurous side. Norway’s long history with the sport and its thrilling nature would appeal to someone who thrives on competition. Pedersen’s natural athleticism could make him a formidable competitor, soaring through the air with precision and grace. But Tom is not fond of heights in this reality and it will never happen.
Ultimately, cross-country skiing would suit his love for endurance challenges, while ski jumping would let him embrace the adrenaline of mastering a daring skill. Either way, Tom would bring his dedication and competitive edge to any winter sport he pursued.

Written Option 1

My player, being one of the older ones in the league has seen countless winter classics. So many, in fact, that he has been sick of them for almost all of his life. He's old as dirt can barely remember a time when they weren't just another game, poorly marketed with limited appeal to casual and hardcore fans alike. Still, it's cool to be there, an interesting event to take part in. And one that he's heard is a good event to be at live. But all in all, it's just another game on the schedule. Nothing exciting about this event as soon as the puck drops. Trying to get into that headspace early will allow him to just turn off his brain and play the game. If I could pick my opponent for it, I would want to see New England, maybe. I like playing those guys, lot of respect there. Obviously I want the game played in Philly, don't really care which venue. I just know it's gonna be a drunken sight to behold for the lucky few who get in.

Outdoor games are definitely a gimmick to sell more expensive tickets, “limited edition jerseys”, and get more money from sponsors. I don’t think its really for the players at all. Even if you were a player who had good memories of playing pond hockey as a kid, chances are this game isn’t in the same area you played. Pond hockey is about the people you play with, not just the fact that its outside. Don’t let the marketing bozos tell you otherwise.

Now all that said it is of almost no benefit to the players, its purely for the fans. Ive been to an outdoor game and it was fun. Its fun to look back at the jerseys. Theres the opportunity for epic finishes. But ultimately its really about the fomo of the ticket and the special jersey. Now even if Im not planning on going to any more outdoor games, I can still geek out over more hockey jerseys. Those are always welcome.

Option 1

Being from Québec where we can skate outside from Christmas to the middle of March (and more if we have some roof over the ice) so of course I grow up playing hockey outdoors. We begin as a skater as skating is the first thing you need to master before anything else. Most of the childs are learning to skate outdoors with their parents and it was the same thing for me and my brother.
Playing outside in a stadium would be really cool and also a bit different from when I was young. We will have our full equipment, will be able to hit and there will be 2 goalies. So exactly like an indoor game, but outside. For a goalie it will be mostly the cold and the sun that will have an impact on our game.
If I could choose, I would pick to play in Montréal in my home province against the Patriotes.

A few days ago, the Newfoundland Berserkers played the Detroit Falcons on the ballpark turf of Comerica Park. And in fact, the game came down to a shootout. Growing up, Hannah played hockey outdoors with her friends in Salt Lake City before her family moved up north to Canada during Hannah's sophomore year in high school. When Hannah played in a ballpark for the Winter Classic, she just treated like a normal game, but while she was playing the game, she had a distraction on her mind which resulted in a memory on playing outdoors as a child and it distracted her on playing. As a result, she tripped a Falcon and was sent to the box for two minutes! If Hannah had a choice to pick her Winter Classic opponent, she would pick Vancouver in BC Place because her family as of right now resides in Victoria, which is a ferry ride away from Vancouver.

Written Option 2: Hockey is great but there are so many other winter sports out there that you can spend your time with. Are there any other winter sports your player is or would have been interested if they didn’t start playing hockey? Something they watched or trained as kid? What sport you think your player would be best at and would they even have potential to be professional at that? Or maybe it is something they like to spend their time even as pro hockey player? How would your player do in general on the alternative timeline where they picked another winter sport over hockey?
In an alternate universe it could be believed that Oskar Scholz would've become a professional ski racer. While his father and father before him are both successful SHL players like Oskar, his grandmother was a successful ski racer and everyone in the family enjoys skiing in the winter season around the holidays. It's hard to say if he'd be super successful at the sport given his large frame, but he does have the discipline and focus to training required to become a strong skier. Perhaps a more believable alternative would be speed skating. Oskar is known for his thicc thighs and high end speed. He'd be a natural fit for a speed skater and would probably fair well on the international stage. Hockey was always his top choice though and with a pair of Challenge cups and over 600 points I think he picked the right sport on this one.

Growing up in Minneapolis Chuck Lumbermouth had loads of options for playing outdoors. They don't call Minnesota the land of a thousand lakes for no reason you know. Chuck would be very excited for the winter classic. There is nothing quite like playing outdoors and the opportunity to do so against the best of the best has him salivating. There is definitely a cold and calculated angle that concentrates on ticket sales, but the players have to enjoy it as well. Its a special opportunity even if it does come with its drawbacks in the form of less than perfect ice. Chuck would prefer to play in a cold weather market versus a warm one. At least the ice is easier to manage and you know it won't be completely miserable. Plus the possibility of a snow storm during the game makes it feel that much more special. (150 words)

Written Option 1: Your team is about to play in the Winter Classic Game. Did your player get to play ice hockey outdoors as they were growing up or are they from area where that isn’t possible? How do you think playing on stadium will be able to replicate those feelings? Is it just pointless gimmick to sell more and more expensive tickets or is it something special for players too, specially your player? And if you had an opportunity to pick who will be your opponent and where the game should be held what would be your picks? Would you want anything else from the event?

Originally from Southern California, there was no outdoor hockey happening in my neighborhood unfortunately. However, I had the fortunate opportunity to move to Minnesota for high school due to hockey, and in Minnesota, outdoor hockey is a way of life. It is still to this day one of the coolest moments of my life the first time I put the pads on to skate on a wide-open lake. Just such an incredible experience.

Now, as far as the NHL doing it and making it a regular season game, I don’t really agree with it. It is not something that I think should have a bearing on the NHL standings. It has become a bit gimmicky, but that should not take away from the coolness factor of it. I would love to see something like the All-Star game be taken outdoors. Something that you can still enjoy, but not have it affect the way the playoff race plays out.

Finally, the Winter Classics! For Gino this is always a special occasion as his hometown of Genova doessn't really have many days of snow in the winter. In the climate of the mediterranean sea you will feel right at home if you are looking to make swimming, surfing, sailing or beachvolleyball your sport of choice, however ice hockey is not really the way to go there. Gino has always been the odd one out, wanting to be a hockey player, mostly influenced by his latvian grandfather who has been a hockey goalie of national renown over in Riga. This meant that Gino had to travel to other cities the older he got to get a "real" hockey experience. He mostly went to the italian part of Switzerland where he was sent through many youth teams for before finally joining the SMJHL. This means that a true winter classic was only known to Gino from watching TV.  So, while others are maybe intent to sell overpriced tickets, for Gino it is a matter of experiencing something you have always dreamt off.
