having teams not make the playoffs make the GMs want to focus on being competetive more than development and having a good locker room environment. Which is what the smjhl is supposed to be about

So good teams = bad locker room and no development

100% agree, I would even go as far to say remove the cap like we have this season

i think removing the cap hurts the developmental side of it because it hurts rookies and new players, not allowing them to make enough of an impact in the league

I never said that. The good teams have a good locker room generally, its the bad teams that dont. And the bad teams tend to have more barren locker rooms and players drafted to those teams dont get to see what an smjhl locker room is like. Players never used to be traded in the smjhl because the idea was that EVERY locker room was equally as active, i dont thnk its that way anymore. teams shouldnt go through ups and downs in activity in the smjhl. Also better teams usually means less ice time for rookies, and while a lot of people might be fine with that, the fact is some first gens want to see their player contribute significantly, and if they dont may go inactive

I just see it as making it easier to sign all draftees to 3mil and being able to add FAs to replace guys that have gone IA, but I can see your point.

As a rookie, I wouldn't really mind a play-off that features everyone. It does cheapen it a little bit, but still, something fun to do at the end of the season instead of just sitting it out in case we don't make the top six.

More games = more activity = fewer busts imo. Especially for late signups who end up signing with a non-playoff team.

100% agree as well, quite a few other sim leagues have their minor team give every player a flat rate with no cap and then send downs go on their major team's budget.

There could be a fun way to include all 10 teams in a bracket. Maybe break the SMJHL into two conferences [again] and have 4/5 play for a chance at a divisional series against the #1 seed. You could also have 7/10 and 8/9 play each other for a chance at 1 and 2. I'm not sure how in-depth the playoff customization of STHS goes, to be honest.

As @kit put it, the SMJHL is for developing. Although I find it hilarious that people who were crying about realism when it came to other aspects of this game are currently trying to remind us that this is a simulation league, none of us can deny that the Juniors is a very different experience from the SHL. It's short-lived and unique. You don't need to add a hyper competitive aspect to it in order for it to be interesting.

Edit: didn't realize this conversation already died lmao, my bad

Halifax is last place but our locker is very active. Standing together if you win is easy.. Losing together and keep together is good!

Personally, I'd like to see a format where 6 or 8 teams make playoffs, especially since there's a clear divide between the top 8 and bottom 2 at the moment.

Maybe something standard like:

Seed 1
          --------
Seed 8          |
                        --------
Seed 4          |        |
          --------            |
Seed 5                    |
                                  ------- Winner
Seed 2                    |
          --------            |
Seed 7          |        |
                       --------
Seed 3          |
          --------
Seed 6

Or maybe even something with a lower bracket to give each team more games to play?

Wait, has this season's playoffs format even been announced yet?

After approximately 13 seasons using a playoff system in which two teams were eliminated it was decided by the SMJHL HO that allowing all teams to make the playoffs was the superior system.

As someone who has played in both, I absolutely prefer every team making the playoffs and my attention to the regular season is not hindered by this fact, granted I am not the target market for the SMJHL I suppose.

Seed 7 vs Seed 10 (A)
Seed 8 vs Seed 9 (B)

Winner of A vs Seed 6 (C )
Winner of B vs Seed 5 (D)

Winner of C vs Seed 3 (E)
Winner of D vs Seed 4 (F)

Winner of E vs Seed 2 (G)
Winner of F vs Seed 1 (H)

Winner of G vs Winner of H for 4 star cup

Kind of like a two-sided gauntlet-style playoffs
You'd want to give 1 and 2 seed byes for 3 rounds? That doesn't sound all that appealing to me. I like the way it's implemented now. 1 through 6 get a first round bye. 8 through 10 play for the remaining 2 second round spots.

I agree with this. 7v10 and 8v9 in two Wild Card matchups for the last 2 spots. Maybe do a Best of 3 or 5 series for those. It would look like:

7v10 (best of 3 or 5)
8v9 (best of 3 or 5)

Winners of both take spots 7 and 8, so we'd get:

1v8
2v7
3v6
4v5

All best of 7
