Next Season's SMJHL Playoff Formatting
#1

What do you guys think about every SMJHL team making playoffs? While I agree that it's nice for the rookies and first gens to all make playoffs, it does make the regular season a lot less exciting.

Personally, I'd like to see a format where 6 or 8 teams make playoffs, especially since there's a clear divide between the top 8 and bottom 2 at the moment.

Maybe something standard like:

Seed 1
          --------
Seed 8          |
                        --------
Seed 4          |        |
          --------            |
Seed 5                    |
                                  ------- Winner
Seed 2                    |
          --------            |
Seed 7          |        |
                       --------
Seed 3          |
          --------
Seed 6

Or maybe even something with a lower bracket to give each team more games to play?

Wait, has this season's playoffs format even been announced yet?

Everyone makes the playoffs this season so I assume 9 v 10 in a play in series but idk

I hate all teams making the playoffs and absolutely think tight playoff races add to the experience of the site.

I think the excitement of the "playoff race" is grossly overstated and that it doesn't make up for the fact you deny first gens a look at what it is like to be in the playoffs.

Maybe we could have the seeding matter a lot for the playoffs? At the expense of maybe making playoffs too complicated, we could have:

Seed 7 vs Seed 10 (A)
Seed 8 vs Seed 9 (B)

Winner of A vs Seed 6 (C )
Winner of B vs Seed 5 (D)

Winner of C vs Seed 3 (E)
Winner of D vs Seed 4 (F)

Winner of E vs Seed 2 (G)
Winner of F vs Seed 1 (H)

Winner of G vs Winner of H for 4 star cup

Kind of like a two-sided gauntlet-style playoffs

You'd want to give 1 and 2 seed byes for 3 rounds? That doesn't sound all that appealing to me. I like the way it's implemented now. 1 through 6 get a first round bye. 8 through 10 play for the remaining 2 second round spots.

I'm sure all rookies would love to win the four star cup as well. Why don't we just have everyone win every game. Losing is too hard on people? The season literally mean nothing now so that a handful of noobs might stay but how many will leave based on the league being unrealistic and lame?

Do you watch hockey in real life? How lame would it be of everyone made the playoffs? Why is this any different? You think users will be more engaged when their first month plus on the site is just meaningless games?

Yes deny some people the playoffs, not everyone gets everything they want and that's what makes it fun.

I feel like there's a balance to be struck here. If the only disadvantage of ending up 9-10 is that you have to play 1 extra match to be where everyone else is in the playoffs, then it feels kinda lame. But this is a rookie league, so having first-genners miss playoffs might also be kinda lame (speaking as a first-genner). If we could just have the regular season seeding matter more than it does now, maybe we could kind of have the best of both worlds?

Hey man great ideas and of course my opinion isn't correct it's just what I prefer. Some people may say that playoff races are not exciting to them but to me I disagree completely.

Some of the most engaged I have seen users, especially new ones is right around the final push to make the playoffs. Yes I have missed the playoffs and I know how long our off season is but my opinion is if someone is liking their team and the site up until the first off-season they will probably kick around until the 2nd season starts. I believe that the hurt of missing makes it that much better when you do make it.

But of course others will be on the other side of the fence and I can see where they are coming from I just don't agree. Great job coming up with ideas and starting conversation man you're awesome!

having teams not make the playoffs make the GMs want to focus on being competetive more than development and having a good locker room environment. Which is what the smjhl is supposed to be about

This isn't real life, Mack. The SMJHL is about development, and giving everyone some kind of playoff experience each year is a part of that.
