I love Luffy as much as a lot of other people who have spent time around him but I think that saying its his to lose is a tad bit of a stretch. He's a front runner along with a couple other bodies but it's a closer race than many would like to believe (and in hindsight, his lead shrunk over the last week)

For, New England is very unlucky to be in a strong conference. They won 27 games and got 61 points which is very impressive for a non-playoff team. They would be a 4th seed in other conference.

Against, he had a good season but not an all-star season. He's a very solid player but I think he won't be an all-star.

Parker Smeb is the toughest player in the entire SHL

For, he is the leading player in hits this season. He also got 0.84 points per game which is a very immpressive stat for a power forward.

For, he already won it by a really large margin. It's impressive how good and consistent. he is at stealing the puck.

The Calgary Dragons are the team that most urgently needs to make a deadline move

Against, they are a very solid team and will be a pretty strong contenders in the playoffs.

Of the major trades that have gone down in the past month, Edmonton's move for Theo Morgan stands out as the best of all

For, this is a massive addition to Edmonton's roster. This trade will make them as one of the favourites to lift a throphy.

Well, this is provably false now that the Blizzard/Stampede have won the President's Trophy. But I don't think New Orleans repeats. I consider them alongside Manhattan as teams that have a good chance but are eclipsed by another squad in their conference: Edmonton for the Specters, and Buffalo for the Rage.

Absolutely. With a group still comprised largely of IAs and near-IAs, they were able to win 8 games this season. When you consider the wealth of talent they have graduating in the next few seasons, I think they're on the verge of a slow climb in the standings. First as also-rans again, then as a middling team, and finally as a top team once some of their best players hit their peaks. The Tampa management team have done a good, if nerve-wracking, job of rebuilding.

Easily, as much as it pains me to say as a Jet that just lost out on his first appearance in the SHL playoffs. The Wolfpack were a much better team than I expected, largely down to goalie Frans Eller, who had a fantastic season that might see him in contention for both the top goalie and top rookie merits on awards night.

Maybe I'm out of line, but this season I wouldn't give it to Luffy... I wouldn't give it to any of the players in the top-five of points this season.

I think defensive acumen is a bit underrated when it comes to MVP awards. I see a player like Andreas Kvalheim, who was T-9th in points by the end of the year, and wonder how bad Texas would be without him. Would he deserve an award like the Ted Lindsay? No, maybe not. But most valuable? I think so. After his 60, the next highest point total on his squad was Manuel Gotze with 44. The Renegades made the playoffs largely on the back of Andreas' work rate and ability.

In fact, I would argue that Kvalheim is the best player in the SHL right now, full stop.

Scholz deserves it, I think.

He's put up the numbers: 54 points, which is a full 10 points higher than the second best from a defenseman (Kirkby with 44).
He also has the physicality of a top defenseman: 113 hits and 53 shot blocks.
And Karlstrasse was a workhorse for the Blizzard: 23:34 TOI, with huge minutes on both the power play and penalty kill.

Scholz is a big reason why Edmonton was a top team this season. Kirkby played fantastically as well, and I expect him to be a finalist for the Stevens. I don't think it's a coincidence that two of these stud defenseman play nearly half of every game for a couple of the best teams in the league... it just goes to show how important defenders are.

I don't think so. He doesn't have the point production to make one of the three teams, and the other stats aren't there to excuse it. Not a hitting beast like he once was, and he doesn't play minutes on the penalty kill. Is he over the hill? Not by a long shot, especially when you consider his 25 goals and 16 assists came from an average TOI of just 17:20, none of which on the power play.

There are better players to include... teammates Lallo Selman and Daniel Smeb, for two.

Maybe if you think hitting is all it takes to be the toughest player.

To me, bravery and willingness to give up the body is much more important. For that, look no further than Minnesota's Mathias Seger, who sometimes seems like a second goalie on the ice when it comes time to keep the puck away from the goal. 254 shot blocks is insane, it's a wonder that he hasn't fallen apart given the consistency with which he gets hit with the puck. 90 hits isn't bad either... I mean, it does count for something, even if it doesn't count for everything.

He did! Which is not surprising, given how phenomenal he is at the defensive part of the game. I just wish he'd use his body more to separate the opponent from the puck. 14 hits is an unfortunately low number for a player with Gibbles' defensive awareness, strength, and balance. He's one of the best players in the league... but still hits no harder than an SMJHL rookie.

With all due respect to Calgary, I don't think they have the roster to compete with the top two teams in their conference, and I'm not sure if there was any move they could have made at the deadline that would have changed that, especially when you consider that the expansion draft is looming. This simply isn't the best time to move picks and/or prospects for a roster player, when it's hard enough already to try and protect your key players.

It's a tossup between the Morgan trade and the BUF/NEW trade that sent Eko van Otter to the Stampede.

When you look at the season Theo Morgan had, yes, you could make the argument that his stat line was helped by being on a great team like the Blizzard. But 37 goals to take the top spot among all forwards is very good, and Morgan adds to what was already a great offense.

Speaking of great offense... Eko van Otter's move to Buffalo was extremely savvy, as not only does the forward add another gun for their insane arsenal, but it means the Stampede will have to give up one less key player in the expansion draft, since hotdog is an auto draft to his own team. Sure, it's a rental only, but it still provides a lot of value for a team that's going for it this season.

I think the move for Eko van Otter just barely ekes out the move for Theo Morgan. But both GMs once again proved why they're a couple of the best in the business. ■

I wanted a new expansion team to be placed in Montreal.
I think one should be placed in Tennessee. I can't remember who it was that suggested it, but they made a strong argument in favor of Tennessee because of the lack of teams in the area, and its presence in the NHL (great fans, too).
Seattle makes a lot of sense, especially with the Kraken joining the NHL. I'm glad they're getting an SHL team too.

West Virginia I wouldn't be crazy about. It feels like an area that's better served with a team in Pennsylvania instead.
Montana? That works as a West team, but I think there are better options: Seattle, for one, and Portland for another.

Seems like cheating to argue against this now, considering now we know that NOL didn't even win the President's trophy. That being said, I still think that between EDM, BUF, and even CHI/HAM/CGY, they have a ton of tough competitors to go through to win the Challenge Cup. If I had to guess, I think maybe EDM will take the west so I still would've argued against this anyways, but NOL does always seems to perform well in the playoffs.

Of the major trades that have gone down in the past month, Edmonton's move for Theo Morgan stands out as the best of all

This move was the undisputed best recent move for two reasons. One, Theo Morgan was able to combine with Bo Kane and Pepperoni to become a lethal first line, with each player being at or just under 70 points. This helped secure Edmonton the West. Second, it helped tank an opposing West team in LA. Not only did Edmonton improve a ton but they managed to make the conference worse.
