(Graded) Deep Dive #2 - Where are the S47 Militia now?

Since I looked at my own player and team with the first Deep Dive, I felt like it'd be cool to take a look at the losing side. In order for there to be a Four Star Cup Champion, there's always a ... Conference Champion. Someone who got to the big dance and lost. In this case, the Outlaws dispatched the Montreal Militia in 7 games. Let's look at some of the key players on this Conference Championship team and what they did with their SMJHL and SHL careers after this series.

The Militia as a team had just recently abandoned their abysmal cream and maroon color scheme and went back to the correct Impact colors and were, as a result, experiencing successes again. They finished 2nd in the SMJHL with a record of 30-15-5 (65 pts). The first line of forwards -- Marc Hagan, Commander Shepard, and James Truong were nearly unstoppable, combining for 50 goals and 65 assists. Their leading scorer, Kristoffer Svenson, had 45 points (though it was largely due to him playing constantly). When it came to the playoff run, though, some different names came up for the Militia.

Oliver Klozoff was the rather unexpected leading scorer for the Militia in the S47 Playoffs. He had 4 goals and 18 assists with 22 points and a +5 rating. Add that to 19 shot blocks and 32 hits in 19 games, and he was really doing all he could to keep Militia in it! Klozoff stayed in the minors for two more seasons, though he never had the same success he did in that particular playoff season. He was traded to the Halifax Raiders in S49 and was quickly called up to the Hamilton Steelhawks. He didn't record a single minute played in 11 games on the roster, at which point he went to Chicago and, after a decent campaign, has been in Calgary since S50. Even though he's moved around a lot, he was a very important part of the Militia's run at the Four Star.

Ravyn Tedisko was a rookie who scored 12 points in 19 playoff games in S47. The top line that had gotten the Militia to the playoffs was slacking a little bit (or struggling to compete with the league's top lines at all times, but who's to say), and Tedisko stepped up despite his 17 minutes per game. He led the team in hits with 44. Unfortunately, Tedisko never made it to the SHL. Some sources close to him say that general burnout from the league led to him leaving before talks with his contract post-entry-draft even began.

And of course, there's Aleksi O'Koivu-Volkova, the goalie of extremely enigmatic origin who bailed out Montreal's defense more than 30 times in S47 (that's not an official number, but a 2.50 GAA in the playoffs is ridiculous). Although the Militia have been known to have many good goalies in their history (Matt Lewis-Flood immediately comes to mind), AOKV had some amazing numbers in his own right: 77 wins, 10 shutouts, and 9 assists in his 145-game juniors career. In his years right after his Juniors eligibility had run out, he didn't play that many games; really just the minimum for any goalie in the SHL (which is fine). He even won a Challenge Cup while on Calgary's roster in S50. After that, though ... not much for Aleksi. He was out of the league shortly after that.

In short, I learned 2 things from the Deep Dive Series:
1. The indexes now <<<<<<< previous STHS indexes. Hope that gets fixed.
2. The Montreal Militia simply weren't that amazing a franchise.

Thank you! Smile
