c. Hamilton has a population of roughly 5 people. Where would you relocate the franchise?

Given the geographic diversity of the SHL, it is a bit difficult to pick a new location for this team. Ottawa is certainly an option. Montreal would have been my first choice, but they have their own team now. New York or Pittsburgh seem to be the most likely to be successful markets, however that may not be as fun. Maybe we'd send them to somewhere in Florida just for funsies.

2. Great Man +3
I'm so new to SHL, I don't really know who is the best. I do know this though: GMing takes dedication. (Hence why most are bad). This is also the reason there is so much turnover in the GM positions - people just don't have the continual commitment for a fantasy league. Apparently everyone except like 3 people. Somehow, JayWhy, Hallsy, and WannabeFinn have been around since the S30s. That kind of commitment is crazy. So this hat-tip goes to all three of them. I guess Hallsy gets a little more praise since they find themselves in the finals...again. (See task 1). And for this league, really the best GM attribute is dedication, so trades and such don't matter as much. But I guess another hat-tip to Hallsy and WannabeFinn for being two heads of the Great Lakes dynasty. To have that sustained success over time is pretty dang impressive. Who cares about GMs before S30 lol

6. Grab Bag +3
a. A cup win in the FHM era is more meaningful. I mean, who can even figure that system out? Getting your thumb on top of that game's mechanics seems almost impossible for how clunky it is. But then again, goalies don't matter and I have no idea what STHS was like lol.
c. Hamilton should be relocated to Vegas, baby. Why isn't there already hockey in the SHL desert? Hamilton players already have so much fun on the ice, why not continue the trend off the ice too? Everyone hates going to Hamilton because they will lose, so why not make the trip enjoyable for all the other teams?
d. Gotta be Ryan Shepard, right? Probably the best player over the past two seasons combined, and that's including all the HAM and TEX players. A close second may be Steve Harrington, but I think Shepard has the more impressive numbers. Even so, both of them have their cups recently, so who even cares.

I am the GM of NA and we are reaching for the stars this year. I say North America wins the first round robin game this year and stuns everyone. We will then win the next game to get a guaranteed medal and unfortunately (but hopefully not) lose in the finals to Norfinwayland. We have the secret ingredient this year, even if other teams are bending the rules to get wins (or mostly losses). It is truly the craziest WJC to date and I think a throwaway team will be on the podium. What a treat that will be to get multiple 155 tpe inactives a WJC medal.

20. Free Advertising +3
It's not necessarily a sim league, but I am in Hockey Dynasty. It is focused on being a GM rather than being a player. It is a daily update, real time game so it can be slow for first time players but the community is great. Once you get in the swing of things it can be really fun. You get to create a team and lead them in a tier style league where hundreds of teams fight over the same FAs and get to trade between leagues. You get to watch your scheduled games like SHL, but it is in real time. Unlike SHL where you can pretty much pick and influence how successful user's players are, HD player development is much more secretive. It takes a bit of luck and a lot of skill to find the diamonds. I'd say it's worth a try for anyone who wants to switch things up. It's kinda like owning an ant farm.

There have been some good and some bad GMs in SHL history. (Mostly bad) Pick a GM you think was outstanding and explain why you think they were one of the better GMs in SHL history. Point to trades/signings/trophy wins/locker rooms to support your claim.

I’m going big time homer here.  I’ve only been on one SHL team, the New Orleans Specters, so I admit, my opinion is very, very biased.  Joe K has been my GM since I was drafted, while I have had the pleasure to have a handful of Co-GMs (TDZ, Nictox, Overdoo and now Python), Joe has been my constant. Now I know we haven’t been great for the last few seasons, but when I joined the team in S50, the Specters were only playing in their fourth season in the SHL and they were considered one of the top teams in the league.  Joe had created a team that was immediately competitive, not only competitive, they were down right good!  His hard work and foresight saw the Specters raise the Challenge Cup in S54, 8 seasons after the team was created, and this wasn’t even our first finals appearance.  So, the start of my players career saw crazy talented group do the unthinkable and now, in the midst of our rebuild, I am hopefully going to be lucky enough to go out on the same high note.  Let’s go Specters!!!

Code:
6. Written, up to 4 TPE - Grab Bag: Pick up to 4 Challenge Cup related topics to write about! Each topic is worth 1 TPE. Each answer must be 50+ words.

a. What is worth more to you, a cup win in the FHM era or the STHS era?
I was able to get a cup win in this FHM era, so I would have to say the STHS, since I was able to do that in either the SHL or the SMJHL.  Simon was so unpredictable it frustrated a lot of people, including me, but if we had FHM going a bit earlier in my career, I think we would have a few more cups in NOLA.

b. Be honest, would we have seen the same final 4 as last year (Chicago, Texas, Hamilton, Buffalo) had BUF/HAM and TEX/CHI not run into each other in the second round?
Yes.  I have no doubt the same 4 teams would be represented and to be honest, I wouldn’t have cared.  It’s been way too long that Hamilton and Buffalo at least have been in running at the end of the playoffs.  It irks me that so many players in the primes of their careers jump ship to these teams to chase a cup.  Now I get older players wanting to take a last shot (like Ray Bourque), but these players are signing when they still have a lot left in the tank.  I guess I’m old school in the sense that loyalty and being a part of a team means something to me.

c. Hamilton has a population of roughly 5 people. Where would you relocate the franchise?
Anywhere else.  It seems that I write about this ever CW, I lived in Hamilton in my younger days and I did not like it, not one bit.  I don’t think I’ve ever actually been back to the dumb city and it irritates me that even a simulation hockey team based in the city has had such success.  So relocation, yes please! To where?  I’ve heard Siberia has a rink, and that would be a major upgrade.

d. Who is the best player to NOT make the final in the past 2 years?
I’m going to say any player on the Toronto North Stars.  They have had some gems over the last few seasons, like Mika Kandinsky, Harry Carpet and Ruslan Zaporozhets and one of the best defenders to play in a while Adam Barron.  These guys were just unlucky to be in the division they are in and deserved much better than they got.

18. Written, 3 TPE, Apocalypse Now 150 words min
In the not so distant future (s64), 4 Texas Hamilton finals in a row have seen most of the SHLers quit out of spite. Only a select few remain. Head Office reeeeaaally likes having 20 teams so they have now allowed every user to have 5 players to fill the void of everyone who left. Name your other 4 players that aren't your current player, select their positions, and decide their focus and path in the league. Postulate where they end up after the draft and how the players pan out.

This is too easy.  I would make an Odelein Line.  They would be the most feared line in the league, and solid mix of grit and physicality with a little bit of offensive flair.  Lyle Odelein III, my current player, would be teamed up with his father, Lyle Odelein Jr and his grandfather, the original Lyle Odelein.  They would also recruit LO III’s cousin Kyle and his son, Kyle Jr.  The original Lyle would join LO III on the blue line, Kyle would take the center position and Kyle Jr. and Lyle Jr would take the wings.  While the majority on this line is a bit on the older side, their knowledge and experience would anchor the Odelein’s giving the younger Kyle’s the ability to show of their speed and skill.  And all being related would give them that sixth sense that family members seem to possess. The Odelein Line would go down in SHL history as one of the toughest and best line to play against.  And just listening to the announcers call the play by play would be pretty frickin awesome.

There are a lot of "could-have-been" draft picks in the SHL, but let's have some fun thinking about someone that busted hard. Write about their potential and where they were picked, and how that franchise could look *if* they had in fact panned out.

I think the beautiful thing about this is I can pick like 99% of my draft class overall to be honest. Like Mika and Bruins' players are probably the only other exception for ever amounting to anything I think stats wise. Like they were on average or struggling teams at times for a small amount of time and just overall they have made themselves proven a long with me to not be busts but it really is fair game for legit fair game. So, so many busts. Hell I went 23rd overall stupidly and that was by mistake and sheer dumb luck and the people above me either never made it or just sucked. I remember all the Whalers minus myself going 1st round and only Bruins who was also just thrown away was not a complete shite bust. I am pretty proud of the fact I proved myself to not be a bust and amount to way more than my crappy draft class full of busts.

There have been a lot of rule changes in the SHL. Where do you think these changes have gone right, where do you think they have gone wrong? Would you ever want to go back to a previous way of doing things? Do you think the SHL is fine as is?

The new regression system was absolutely needed for this league. It is just silly you can go like 3-4 years on a player just hanging on as parity never changes. Like any other sim league would be laughed for working like that. I get this place has edgy people from the edgy days of old from like 2014, I remember it well but jesus christ seeing the idiots get salty at a much needed change just says a lot. I am very glad to see that HO and the commish crew genuinely do have the best interests of this league at heart cause some players genuinely dont. This kills my player in the short term and that is okay. It needs to happen.

I genuinely without a doubt would never want to go back. The sole reason I continue on is i have good stats historically and i want to gun Hall of Fame with Jon but I would have given up a very long time ago on this sim league otherwise. Well, that and to prove I was better than 23rd. Which I have.

c. Hamilton has a population of roughly 5 people. Where would you relocate the franchise?
d. Who is the best player to NOT make the final in the past 2 years?

A, Without a doubt I have to go with the STHS era. The FHM era has been very dull. I will admit I did get another 4th vs 5th prediction wrong but...I mean if that is the only real upset this place continues to prove it has a huge problem. At the very least players were not averaging all averaging 1 to 1.5 points a game. Some were yes, but nowhere near this ration and it is fucking silly to see. STHS at least made this entertaining. [87 words]
B. Yeah, 100% I think. Just a severe lack and parity and whenever true changes happen the vocal minority who do not know how to run a healthy sim league at whining like a bitch. It is quite disgusting to see this continue. Like I would love to see people defend this system if they knew how the better parity leagues functioned. [62 words]
C. I think the most fitting would be in America with a place that is known for a low population like Wyoming. I think they would also detest being in Wyoming so honestly it would eb great to see. Or you know just another team that is not 1 of the better 4 or 5 teams in the league just getting every playoff win in rotation [66 words]
D. I mean I personally do not keep track of players, stats, standings at this point so I do not know the correct answer but I highly doubt many players that arent on the best teams are on shitter none playoff teams cause that is just how this league works. I will say me just for ego sake I guess. [60 words]

1. Beans

2. While I’m still learning the history of the SHL and the SMJHL, I’ve met with a fair amount of General Managers in my time whether it was through my drafted teams or through prospect interviews leading up to entry drafts. In that time I have been very impressed by a few of those general managers but for the purpose of this post I will write about Puoli, current GM of the Texas Renegades.

I’m not too sure when Puoli took over Texas or if they have always been in charge of Texas but they have managed to build a very successful team. For the past two seasons now Texas has reached the finals of the SHL playoffs, this time looking to win the challenge cup. Puoli provides direction to their players when it comes to building them to be a star player and making the most of their skills and TPE. Puoli is also a dedicated simulator, running plenty of sims in order to determine outcomes of created lines to ensure they get the most out of their team. The prospects may need to wait a while to get on the team but there’s no doubt that they’ll get called up when the time is right. Puoli still communicates with them and makes them feel welcome in the locker room and part of the team.

I have no doubt that the Renegades have a very strong and current contending roster that will lead to victory and will maintain that contending roster so long as Puoli is steering the ship.

6.a. As a newer member of the SHL, a cup win in the FHM era would be worth more to me for obvious reasons. I recognize many users feel there is much more value to the STHS era cup wins as opposed to the FHM era but I believe what matters most is the history that was made to pave stories of the past for newer players. In the end a cup win is a cup win and any player will be happy to have a title.

6.b. In all honesty I believe the Texas and Chicago series could have gone either way. Chicago gave Texas a hard time all season and we expected a very tough matchup. Chicago took a 2 win lead on the series but Texas managed to come back with 4 straight wins. One of those wins was an OT win for Texas, and the other was a one goal game. Had that OT win for Texas been a loss, it was likely that Chicago would have been the team going forward.

6.c. Hamilton is ready to relocate. Where is the team heading? Right where the market needs a team. Hawaii! Mele Kalikimaka everyone! The Hawaii Hockey Club is coming. Cheerleaders? No thanks! We got Hula Dancers! Will they be cold? No way! Tiki Torches will line the stadium. Will everyone want to quit their team and go play for Hawaii? Who wouldn’t! Let’s go Hawaii!

6.d. This was a tough one for me to figure out as I’m still getting used to all the players in the league but after some quick research across players and who hasn’t made the finals, I decided to go with Jimmy Wagner. Jimmy had a great season and unfortunately never got to be a part of the finals. It’s likely that the Panthers will make a strong case for next season so maybe they’ll get their chance then.

12. Milestones

14. The next team to have their window close I believe are the Hamilton Steelhawks. There are some very notable players on the team that have been at their prime for a couple of seasons but the regressions will soon start hitting real hard and those players may soon retire making Hamilton much less successful. Now would be a great time to swap those players for some picks if possible to start getting ahead of the rebuild. They have lots of assets now that can be flipped for some good picks or prospects. If the Steelhawks get younger now they’ll spend less time at the bottom, but in saying that, apparently Hamilton has FHM figured out really well and could survive trading off pieces and stay near the top. Either way, they have players that may be ready to go so they’re my pick to be blown up. It’s up to the management if they can keep the team contending throughout a rebuild.

Task 1 (3 TPE) - Verification Word: choccy

Task 6.c (1 TPE) - I would move Hamilton to a place that I don't think anyone else in the league would move them. I would move the Steelhawks to Tulsa, Oklahoma. My main reason for doing this is simple: nobody wants to live (or play hockey) in Tulsa, Oklahoma. Hamilton has been dominant since I got into the league, so I think that knocking them down a peg could be a good thing. So let's move them to a place that will hurt team morale a bit.

Task 12 (1 TPE) - Milestones

Task 21 (2 TPE) - I think that my choice for PT director would be Enigmatic. She's really creative and funny, so I think that she would probably be able to come up with some good point task ideas. She also knows what it's like to be in a sim league where you don't know anything about the sport, so I think that she would probably do a good job of choosing point tasks that are fairly easy to do even if you don't know very much or anything about hockey. I know that this is something that I struggle with when I try to do certain SHL PTs, since I literally know nothing about hockey, not even how many players are on the ice at a time.

6. A - As someone who has actually been able to win a cup in both areas somehow, I would think that the one in FHM probably meant more. Winning in STHS was always a vague possibility due to how random the sim was, and the worst teams in the league always had a chance to take out the very best in the league on a given day. With FHM, it felt like it was a lot more skill dependent, and you knew you were always going to be up against it against the top teams in a best of 7 game series.

Welp, you waited until the last day to grind out your CW and the CC finals are longggggggg over by now. congrats to [TEAM], woo! Was it an exciting final, or predictable? Is one team the clear winner?

After a fairly boring first few rounds featuring tons of sweeps or lopsided victories, the Challenge Cup finals was actually a very exciting back-and-forth series. There were multiple overtime games and lead swaps throughout the series. Hamilton and Texas took this series to 7 games and there was really no outright favorite. They battled hard, and different players took turns being heroes on different nights. I know everyone is sick of the same teams being in the finals every season, but I think we have to give both teams credit as neither was the division leader during the season, but were able to take their games up a notch when the playoffs came around. Hamilton of course is a perennial favorite who seem to never lose a step, while Texas is that team others can look at to say, if you build right and work hard to create a window for yourself, you can rise to the top of the league! In the end, Texas was the winner in game 7, and they get to bask in the glory of their cup win for the next season!

hahahahahaha remember this task from last season? The one where everyone was like "nah we're good, tampa and BAP will be in the finals soon and you'll see that the old guard will make way for the new young teams". Now that we have the exact same fucking teams in the final again, let me ask, is parity an issue in the SHL? How do we combat this?

It's a pretty poor take to say every team should have an equal chance to win every season. There will always be teams at the top and teams who struggle. Some teams are well-managed and if they make it to the top, of course they will likely be there again. These 2 teams took different paths to get where they are - Hamilton has been a favorite almost every season since the FHM era began, while Texas if you recall was one of the teams at the bottom in the first season or 2. But they were able to keep their group together and motivated to keep fighting to become one of those top teams. Both teams are great examples for other franchises - Hamilton as a team which manages to keep being great despite all the rule changes thrown at them to try and break their hold, and Texas as that team which rebuilders can look to and say, we can do this too! Overall I think if you look at the standings from season to season, there are fewer really bad teams and fewer overly dominant teams. Some teams are at the beginning of a rebuild where they are looking to rise up, others are starting to see the results after a few seasons of pain, and some others who used to be at the top are starting to drop off and will have to consider whether they too need to go full rebuild or try to work some Hamilton-esque magic to attract top Free Agents or shrewd trading to make sure they don't lose a step to the up and comers. Dynasties are a thing in real life, too, very often when a team wins they stay in contention for multiple seasons, and very often teams which are bad stay bad. I think we are seeing that the FHM knowledge is overall growing and more teams are figuring out how to maximize their team and player performances. And there was a new team in the semis this season as Los Angeles made it that far for the first time in FHM, so there's an example of some emerging parity also. Really I think it's not as big a deal as some people think, I don't begrudge teams for having success and maintaining it. Other teams can look at this as their challenge, how do we get to that level?, rather than just proclaim the league is broken!

So to go along with my current player Grogu, who plays Center, I am going to create an entire line of Mandalorian characters who all play together on the same team for their entire careers!

At Left Wing will be the huge star known only as Mando. He can do it all, he has great battle skills, a fierce sense of loyalty, and never gives up to make sure his lil buddy Grogu becomes as great as he can be! When the chips are down, he always seems to find a way to come out ahead!

At Right Wing will be Boba Fett. He will be an offensive dynamo, armed with an array of weapons (shooting, passing, etc) that make him a top-notch sidekick.

At defense will be Bo-Katan Kryze. She is able to shoulder a lot of responsibility and while sometimes can come across as antagonistic, she only wants what is best for the team, and will do whatever it takes to protect the lead!

At goaltender for my final create will be The Armorer. Obviously you need that net protected and who better than the one who protected the clan and the foundlings during the worst times. This is the Way.

Obviously there will need to be one more defender, and no tampering, but there could be a very famous player who shows up in the final episode (TDL? FA?) and leads the team to glory and defeats the evil empire to claim the Cup!
