Whatchu know bout the Big Easy?
#1

Taking a big break from the big Mardi Gras party in the Big Easy to give you all a little insight into where I am heading.

As of last Thursday, I am a Simulation Hockey League prospect for Season 65. Sadly, I will be leaving the Baton Rouge Kingfish and entering the SMJHL Entry Draft. Playing for the Kingfish has been an awesome experience, but it is time for this guy to chase his dream of playing in the greatest professional hockey league known to mankind.

I have always aspired to be the greatest professional hockey player to emerge from the very unconventional hockey market of Louisiana. I long anticipate pummeling some of the game’s greatest on the biggest stage. I often think about the SHL fans seeing a 6’4, 235-pound unit flying across the ice and wondering, “who the hell is that guy and where did he come from!?” Then, the same fans notice the piles of beads strung across my neck, (don’t worry about how I acquired them), and think, “a pro hockey player from New Orleans!?” Yes sir! Well, sort of.

SHL fans should know that I am from Baton Rouge, yes, Death Valley. My parents were LSU graduates thus, it made sense that I would follow in their footsteps. I spent three years at LSU, playing in front of nobody but parents and close friends. I was developed while a member of the the Shreveport Mudbugs, Louisiana’s only junior ice hockey club. My parents could have sent me North to a big hockey program or a prep school, but I choose to stay home.

I grew up going to Louisiana IceGators games as a kid and dreamed of playing for them. Sadly, the IceGators were relocated to Illinois before the 2016 Southern Professional Hockey League season. There is not enough fan interest in ice hockey in Louisiana. Football is king, as are movie and television shows about vampires. The New Orleans Specters do very well, but the rest of Louisiana could care less. It is my goal to change that. I will work my has off to make it to the SHL and put Louisiana on the pro ice hockey map. Perhaps, a hometown guy making waves on the biggest stage will generate fan interest in the sport.

Some day, in the near future, Louisiana’s sports heroes will be Karl Malone, Drew Brees, Joe Burrow, and Nolan Krewe.

Tough one, but Shaq is from New Jersey. Burrow’s lone 2019 eclipsed everything Shaq did at LSU. Speaks volumes to how much of a football state Louisiana is.

Oh, I agree. It doesn’t have to be an either/or Smile
