We just need to find a way to make the other thing even more enjoyable so people actually want to do it. I don't think actively nerfing the enjoyability of a portion of the league is the way to make people enjoy the other parts more. We need to meet/exceed the bar, not lower it so people's options are worse overall.
Well I'm not saying "make it suck" but I would consider from what I've heard outside of 3-4 teams, the J isn't exactly competitive. However, if there were less teams, there'd be less dead LRs such as St. Louis, and players would have to start getting called up, which would help in terms of the enjoyment, because teams around the league would be having to field lower tpe players, as opposed to just the 1K tpe rookies.
I think there's absolutely an argument to be found for SHL expansion in this, but contracting the J or forcing people up sooner is just not gonna work when there are not roster places for those players to be found. Fifth season players like the ones that are being eliminated here are almost entirely players who are not going to go up to the SHL anyway because they would have had to go through waivers if they were anywhere near ready to do that, and likely wouldn't have cleared waivers anyway, so this change is afaik not actually forcing anybody to be called up sooner than they would have been.
Eliminating the fourth season or contracting the J without adjusting anything on the SHL level absolutely would be forcing a lot of people out of the J who
are going to be SHLers eventually (like me) and trying to get them into roster spots that just currently do not exist for a player of that TPE level. I think another SHL expansion paired with J contraction could be a viable option, but I don't think it's as easy as just booting them out of the J without ensuring that we do the work to make sure they actually have somewhere to go. The S62 draft class alone has forty active players - about thirty of them with 700TPE or higher, who would already have had to have been on teams this season. Do we really have thirty roster spots for 700-800TPE players right now in the SHL, let alone the 10 or so other active ones with less TPE than that?
Also, for what it's worth, the J is actually really competitive this season. There's the obvious outlier at the top that everybody expected, but below that, the next six teams in the league are all within five points of each other at most, and eight out of fourteen teams have a winning record.

We also need to allow for these new regression changes to start affecting career length and TPE maxes. There will be less 2k hyper elite players in the future and those who didn’t max earn will lose TPE faster than previous slower earners. This might itself create a more natural / quicker turnover that will require players to naturally be called up earlier than for example, the last 5 draft classes have been called up
Edit to add: this will also allow those 700 TPE players to be more effective as they are not battling a bunch of 16-2100 TPE players, rather that same comparable group with new regression (and season shortening) will see them be 14-1900 TPE players

Eliminating the fourth season or contracting the J without adjusting anything on the SHL level absolutely would be forcing a lot of people out of the J who are going to be SHLers eventually (like me) and trying to get them into roster spots that just currently do not exist for a player of that TPE level. I think another SHL expansion paired with J contraction could be a viable option, but I don't think it's as easy as just booting them out of the J without ensuring that we do the work to make sure they actually have somewhere to go. FWIW, not including goalies there's around 35 players in the league currently signed as sub 200 TPE IFAs, and if you included IFAs in the like 200-300 range the number is way higher. You could very easily contract the J by two, maybe even four teams and it would boost active number averages in the league without having a ripple effect that hits the SHL. I don't think there's a downside to just doing that full stop and not moving anything else around.

I wouldn't call it "no good reason" seeing as we literally had active players joining and no teams to put them on. I agree that the timing ended up being unfortunate due to a lot of folks moving on from hobbies they took up during the pandemic and we may not currently have the players to support the number of teams we have. But I'm not sure where you're getting the "majority of teams are dead" stat from. There are always going to be
some players in a developmental league who go inactive, of course, but I personally am in four J locker rooms - none of them are dead, and I'm not even in their team-only spaces where I'm sure they're even more talkative. I'm not even in NL/CAR/DET but I am 100% positive none of them are dead. I'm sure some J locker rooms are quieter than others but saying the majority of them are dead is an incredible stretch.
My point here is - you can't force players
out of the J without figuring out where else you are going to put them. You contract a couple of J teams without doing anything up top, okay, there's a minimum of forty roster spots that no longer exist in the J. That's not even considering the 40+ people who are about to get called up from S62 alone. Contracting the J blindly without doing anything to address the fact that we haven't waited long enough, as Rashford mentioned, to even see how the new regression scale will change SHL roster makeup, seems like a recipe for disaster. I think you have to give the more recent changes time to actually pan out before you just start yeeting players into the SHL without making sure there's somewhere for them to go.
I would infinitely prefer having too many IA players in the J over getting into a situation where we have active players who literally have no spot to play in the J or the SHL, and I am legitimately worried that's what would happen if we just suddenly kicked a bunch of active people out of the J without doing anything to make sure they're going to have a place to land.

I don't think there's a downside to just doing that full stop and not moving anything else around.imagine telling someone who’s a J GM and SHL HO they don’t know what they’re doing
