S66 PT #3: Breakaway Challenge
#31

I grew up with hockey ending in ties and while I get it, I just never was a big fan of it so I wouldn't wanna return to that era. What I do love is the 3 on 3. So much ice to maneuver and really show off the strength of the bench and the team. Infinite seems like a drag though so part of me thinks a hybrid would work out really well. Three 10 minute periods of 3v3 Hockey and if still tied after that going to the shootout. That way everyone gets some 'free hockey' out of the deal and its not a repetitive strain on the lines to have to play lights out. For a real thriller, make the backup take the shootout. Anyway, big fan of the three on three and hope it stays around. Going back to ties just seems lazy really. Crap need three more words, oh here we go lol.

HOCKEY PROMPT: I would not change it, because I think it’s the best compromise we can have for now. If it was only from me, I would bring back the tie, but I don’t think it’s popular enough, so I rather we just stick with the shootout. Infinite 3-on-3 is not really doable from a logistic perspective, because teams usually need to be at the airport by a certain time if they don’t want to be stuck in the city they are in for the night, especially when they play again the next day. What I don’t like about the shootout is that we are determinate the outcome of a game by using an event that is massively different from what the regular game of hockey (i.e. 5-on-5 hockey) is and I don’t think it should count the same as winning a game in regular time and I feel the same, but to a lesser extent, about overtime with fewer players on the ice. The 3-2-1 point system would fix this, but the league like the parity create by giving wins and overtime wins the same number of points.

Hockey prompt:

Hockey shootouts in the regular season are fun, there are many games and not all can be prolonged indefinitely. Even if I like the shootouts I would like to see the overtime to be extended. Just because I do feel like the overtime play is too short. I really like 3 vs 3. And after like 10 minutes of overtime they could settle it with a shootout. In the playoffs I would not ever want to see a shootout as I like the games to be ended with overtime play. Just as they are. But in the regular season I like them to be a part of the game. But as mentioned I would like a longer overtime period. The thrill of skater versus goalie is really exciting. Even though hockey shootouts are the most goalie-favoriting shootout I have ever seen. But it is very good to favor the skilled skaters that actually can get the puck in. I am all in favor of how it is.

I always hated shootouts as a way to break the tie in an actual hockey game. I don't think it's a very good indicator of skill (even though the players are really good), because all it takes is one guy (ala Linus Omark) to do something stupid and it becomes a meme. In my opinion, a way better game of determining a winner for hockey games is through overtime. I am a big fan of the old four on four format, but I don't hate the three on three format either. The ideal situation is in the playoffs where it's just five on five sudden death and then goes into another period if nobody scores, but I don't think that would be good in the regular season.

Something cool to me would be 5 minutes of four on four overtime, then at the whistle it switches to three on three for 5 minutes, or until 10 minutes have transpired then into a shootout if need be.

Hockey Prompt:
I have always hated the way most professional sports leagues handle ties in general. First team who scores in the NFL, shootouts in the NHL, ect, ect. I think the easiest and most efficient way to break up a tie is to just continue playing full quarters until will team ends with the lead. You see this to some degree in professional baseball. I think it has a place in all sports. After all, professional sports are supposed to be about the best team that particular day walking out with a win. Not the best player, not with the team that stepped up first, but the best overall team. Just add 10 minute quarters after a tie. If its still tied, add another. It doesn't matter if the teams are out there on the ice all night. You better have some depth, you better have some stamina, because the only way you're getting out of that game is one team outscoring the other in a full quarter of hockey.

Hockey Prompt
I feel like most hockey fans I hate the shootout, there's a reason that they don't exist in the playoffs when the games actually matter and also why the regulation or overtime wins (ROW) gets counted separately than Shootout wins for tiebreakers. As most people say, it doesn't feel much like a "hockey" play, it's a one on one of players against the goalie and there is nothing the rest of the team can do to help.  Shootouts are fun in the all-star game when players get to mess around and have fun but shouldn't be a part of real hockey games. Ideally you would do unlimited 3 vs 3 overtime but that is obviously very taxing on the players, 3 on 3 hockey is very exciting and I'm glad they switched to it in the last couple of seasons, it seems that OTs end much faster when there is less people on the ice so hopefully games wouldn't last too much longer.

Hockey task:

WIlliam Salming likes shootouts. Why? Because he is good at them. His career percentage is way over 50%. why? Because he practises them after all practise sessions. He also has played a lot floorball in his youth and in that sport shootouts are even more common. Salming has some moves which he has practised many years and every detail in those moves have been thought accurately. That's why Salming rules in shootouts and would love to see them even in place of 3v3 overtime. Some special moves which Salming has are related to wrist shots. In his favourite move, he apporoaches the goalie from the right, then he slows down a little bit, goes more centre, switches the puck or ball to his backhand, then quickly back to forehand and shoots towards left top corner. Usually goalie is in late when he tries to move within Salming's motion from right to left. Another good move is named after Jussi Jokinen. In that move, Salming does pretty similar move in front of goalie but then shoots towards left bottom corner just over the goalie's pad.

Written Task:  What are your thoughts on the using shootouts to end games in the NHL? Do you like it? Would you change it? If so how? Bring back the tie? Infinite 3-on-3 until someone scores? Do you find them exciting or do you groan when OT ends? I'd love to hear your thoughts! (150+ words)

In the early 2000's the number of goals per game were in decline, so to avoid what the league felt was becoming boring tedious gameplay, a system of an overtime period and a shootout were gradually introduced.  So, by the 2005 - 06 season, tie games were effectively eliminated.  In 2016 - 16 another tweak to the rules limited the number of players on the ice in overtime to 3 plus a goalie.  I understand the league's desire to have hockey be more offensively minded.  Fans want to see goals.  To this end there were other rule changes limiting the neutral zone trap and limiting the stick work that impeded players progression.  I, personally, am not crazy about the shootout, but even here I see the need to "end" the game in some kind of timely fashion.  After all, the NHL has to try to fit their games into TV time slots.  3 on 3 intrigues me a bit more.  Typically 3-on-3 results in a puck possession battle punctuated by mad end-to-end rushes and some spectacular saves.  Frequently games are ended in this way.  In the future we may see the NHL change the 3-on-3 aspect of the game from 5 minutes to 10 as this seems to generate more interest that a shootout.

It's the SHL Skills Competition and Dirty Boots has been asked to take part in the breakaway challenge. As Boots plays the offensive defenseman lately, shootouts aren't usually his thing but if it's for the entertainment, he'll gladly take part and start making the plans.

Boots will attempt to stay on brand in order to appease his fans. When it's Boots' turn to step up for the breakaway challenge he comes off the bench but not in his skates. He'll come out in his big boots, stepping and sliding towards center ice. At the whistle Boots will start making his way across the ice in his Boots, leaving mud tracks behind him of course, and to the dismay of the ice caretakers, Boots' team has prepared a great big muddy puddle in front of the goalie crease in which Boots jump and stomps on to distract the goaltender for a nifty between the Boots goal that goes top shelf. To celebrate the goal, water canons are released to clean the dirt and spray the fans in the splash zone. The goalie is not pleased at all.

It is the dream of every player to win the "Breakaway Challenge" on live television. TO that effect, Seamus has been practicing his goalie work in secret after games and regular practice. You see, goalies wear helmets and that makes them pretty obscured to the crowd. Seamus had this plan that all he needs to do is knock out the mvp goalie who is supposed to be the one saving his awesome breakaway and impersonate him. Why you ask? Even if you use all these fancy moves and gizmos there is always a chance that the goalie is going to just be extra and make the save no matter what you do. So whats the best way to score on the goalie? Make sure the goalie isn't even there to begin with. So on the night before the challenge, Seamus took out the mvp goalie, put on his gear the next day. Attempted to make as many saves as possible between making appearances as himself. Then when they called his name, he took off his helmet in the goal and strode to center ice where he casually sauntered up to the goal, sat down and pushed it in.

I've always been at odds with the shootout/OT structure. While continuous OT is a little boring, in a way, it only gains excitement the longer the game goes on! I would really prefer continuous OT until someone scores to a shootout, even in the regular season. On one hand, it's important to "test" teams that just remain deadlocked with a different form of the game, be it 4v4 or 3v3. I just don't think a shootout is something that a team can 'prepare for' in the sense that it's so different from the other facets of the game. It barely even comes up in a penalty shot situation. In that sense, I've always been against it determining the outcome of games. All that said, I think we should start with 5v5 overtime for 5 minutes, and then go to 4v4 for 5 minutes and, finally, continuous overtime at 3v3 until somebody wins it. While that obviously doesn't come up in games, either, it's certainly what teams practice and shows who the better team on the ice is better than a shootout, which relies on the goalie and a handful of people's set pieces.

Hockey Prompt

There's no denying that when a game goes to a shootout, everyone in the arena is on their feet and are more involved in the game than ever before. The entire arena booing as the away player skates up, cheering as the home hero takes his shot, it's an absolute blast. However, I do think OT would be better suited for a 5 minute 4-on-4 period, then 5 minutes of 3-on-3, and then if someone STILL has managed to not score by then, then sure, go for the shootout. I don't like to sound like the old man yells at clouds guy, because the shootout is extremely fun to watch and I really do enjoy it, but I would just love to see more ACTUAL hockey. No team is going to be winning the Stanley Cup because of their ability to score on a penalty shot / shootout (unless the opposing team has REALLY fucked up).
