2. Gnabe Dabson leads in both goals and points while Tony Soprano is second for both. Is that enough to give offensive advantage to Philadelphia?

It should be enough but since I am writing this after San Francisco has already won the cup, congrats to them by the way, it is more of a question of “should” it have been enough. It should have, but while The Forge had the two dominant players, San Fran had a more rounded team with greater depth. All Phillie had to do was capitalize on the top line but unfortunately the San Franians shut down that line hard and in the end, the two top point getters wasn’t enough to win, but dang did they come close and gave it their all. In the End, depth won the cup, and in hindsight, it should have.

It’s still nice to see the Forge have another great season even though coming in second isn’t all the celebration they wanted, but to come so close is better than all the other teams in the league save one. Hopefully Gnabe Dobson and Tony Soprano keep that chemistry alive for the next season and they will finally hoist the cup, but there are a bunch of teams who won’t want to give them the chance. Congrats to the Philadelphia Forge on a spectacular season and good luck to them in the next one. Hopefully they finally win the coveted Challenge cup.

So the Great Falls Grizzlies, having been sadly eliminated early in the playoffs in the juniors, decided to charter a luxury bus to go see the Philadelphia Forge battle the San Francisco Pride in the finals. Sounded like fun and the whole team was excited to travel from Montana to San Fran to see the match but it was not meant to be.

Intentions were good, but the bus travelled through Nevada and the team made a collective decision to stop in Vegas, just for one night. Famous last words. The whole team while playing craps got into a brawl with a bunch of Star Wars Cos players. Even though the light sabers were hand made they still packed a punch, or a wollop, and a bunch of Grizzlies ended up needing stitches. Elvar Gil Galad was last seen beating the crap out of Boba Fett, and stole his helmet. Last he was seen, he was headed north up the strip screaming he was going to wear the Helmet next season as a reminder that Boba Fett (at least the one in Vegas,) was a total chump and he will have to live with a better Fett wearing his head as as a trophy. The rest of the Grizzlies bailed themselves out of jail or the hospital and left Vegas without Gil-Galad. It is assumed Elvar will be found in Chicago by the beginning of the season.

Last season, Aslak got the opportunity to represent Norway in the IIHF Tournament following his rookie season in the SMJHL. It was an incredible learning experience going against the best players in the world, and he played a small part of Norway’s first-place finish in Group A. While the knockout portion of the tournament didn’t go to plan, it was a very successful IIHF for the Norwegian team.

Aslak will be back once again for this season’s tournament, where Norway hopes to build on last season’s success. Norway will be looking to at least pick up a win in the knockout and properly compete for a medal in Season 79.

10. But I Thought You Were Tanking (185 words)

For first time since league changed to 66 game schedule all teams in league finished with more than 30 points and it wasn’t by small margin as Edmonton who finished last ended up with 38 points, which would have been enough to make playoffs ten seasons ago. Do you think it shows change in mentality of teams when it comes to tanking? Maybe they just got lucky? Or are we seeing the impact of the changes to how draft order is determined?

Without any shade to Edmonton, this was 100% luck and is more a factor of FHM being FHM. If you look at the rosters, Edmonton only has two players over 1000 TPE. It’s almost shocking that they won a single game, let alone 16. Then you have Calgary, who surprised a lot of people, and they only have 3 players *under* 1000 TPE, including their backup goalie. But EDM still beat Calgary 11-3 once this season. We’re just seeing far more flukey wins out of the engine.

And to some extent that’s fine in the regular season. Over 66 games, the cream is still going to rise to the top. (Insert truncated rant about 66 being one of the dumbest number of games we could use, when 64 gives you a perfectly balanced schedule.) It’s becoming extremely frustrating in the playoffs though. There was a 14-0 game *in the Finals* this season, which is so wildly unrealistic, it’s literally 4 more goals than the most lopsided game in NHL playoff history and 6 more goals than the most lopsided game in the Stanley Cup Finals.

11. Finals Roadtrip (115 word)

Your team has scheduled a road trip to go see games 1 and 2 of the SHL finals between San Francisco and Philadelphia (or to four-star cup finals between those games if your player plays for either team). You’re in charge of officially setting up the trip. The only rule? You gotta go by bus! Where do you stop along the way? Which of your teammates are you most excited to go on a trip with? Do you end up missing game 1 and 2 because of the many stops between your team’s home city to San Francisco that you’ve planned? Does the bus end up breaking down at any point? How does the trip go? If you’re on a team playing in the finals, plan a trip to the first away games instead (by bus of course, for teambuilding and fun).

Conveniently (/s), the Renegade bus just goes for a little circle around San Francisco Bay, since we were already there for our own game 5. Maybe we do a little stop to take a tour of the Pixar headquarters or wander the lovely Berkeley campus, but it’s mostly just stopping at bars. Like every. single. bar. in the greater San Fran area. Eventually, we’ll wind our way back to Broadway, which sounds like it’s going to be a nice place and there’s a very near little bookshop which has been there for like 50 years at this point, but actually the whole street is just bars and strip clubs. We aren’t even watching the games!

7. This time for J: Who you got? Who wins the Four Star Cup? Why?
I have San Francisco. I believe that them going through the west teams like they did sets them up well for this finals matchup with an eastern conference team. THey are extremely well rounded and I believe they have everything needed to win the cup this season. Philadelphia has a good team, but I expect San Francisco to win in a close series. (63 words)

Looks like [TEAM] won Season 79 Challenge Cup! So who won and why? What
could the other team have done differently to change the result? What
was your favorite part of the series?
San Francisco are the champions! What a run for them, and the finals was indicative of that. After a tough game 1 loss, it was all Pride in the final 4 games. As a matter of fact, in all of the games it was pure domination with the smallest goal differential in any game being just 3 goals. All things considered, it was not an exciting final series for fans of neither team as we had to watch blowout after blowout through the series. However, a lot of credit has to go to San Francisco. In particular, game 3 of the series when they won 14-0 on the road in Philadelphia. In all of my years following hockey, I have never seen anything like this and I can only imagine how stunned the Philadelphia fans and players must have been when this happened. San Francisco was firing on all cylinders in this series, as evident by their high goal total while also relatively low goals against. I honestly do not think Philadelphia could have done anything differently this series, maybe in game 3 to avoid the 14-0 loss, but not in the whole series to avoid the 4-1 loss. As good of a team as the Forge are, I just felt that the Pride held the advantage in all areas of the game and their depth really came through. (229 words)

During their 20 seasons in league Philadelphia has never missed the playoffs. Which is impressive but still there are other teams with longer playoffs streaks, while other teams clean the house others try to stay afloat and do a retool while still staying in playoffs, both with varying successes. Out of last 5 Challenge Cup winners both Los Angeles and San Francisco missed playoffs about 6 seasons before they won their cup while New England has been in playoffs since S67. What in your opinion is best way to achieve success in SHL? Is it better to have high but shorter peak or should teams try to aim staying close to top but likely never reaching it for longer, potentially almost indefinitely? Can they somehow do both?

The Simulation Hockey League tends to cycle through competing teams and rebuilding teams although some teams have better luck rebuilding than others. How do teams stay at the top? In my opinion it is a lot of public relations, good drafting and chemistry that is the key to success. Management groups and teams have to have the right people in charge to attract players and good vibes to their roster. If the management group consists of a controversial figure, then it is unlikely players will want to go to that team. The team needs good public relations to attract and also keeps those players. Two good drafts consisting of two core players will keep teams competing as players age, in the case of Philadelphia, I'm sure they have either been drafting or acquiring younger talent with their picks to sustain their success. Drafting is key, but targeting the right aged players with picks could also work. Drafting in the Simulation Hockey League is more for the personality than skill, as most players are a similar skill level, teams draft people not players, so the more "good" people teams draft, the more likely success that team will have down the road as they continue to attract and add "good" people to the team. The last being chemistry which is always key to on ice success and off ice success, the locker room is key to the SHL.

Sad Ketchup organizing the road trip from Chicago to San Francisco/Philadelphia, the team would be stopping in Salt Lake City, Utah to see the mountains and visit the NHL's new arena/Team. On the way back to Philadelphia, the team would be stopping in Pittsburgh to get some food and visit Sidney Crosby and the Penguins. It would be fun road trip with stops in two major US cities, to see the sights and get good food.

Well first of all bad idea to put Pique Boo incharge of this he comes late to his own games by whole hour sometimes cause he's just so busy. But now since Pique Boo is incharge we gotta plan it. Knowing Pique Boo he'd probably be clumsy and accidentally drive to the wrong State cause he doesnt know his city's very well...... Ok so he'd start in Chicago and then accidentally drive down to st louis because he doesnt know his North, East, South, and West very well than once he notices that we're going the wrong way he'd panic and accidentally drive all the way to Dallas and then just give up because game 1 - 2 already happened and just drive to Florida to injoy the warm weather.....

2. Gnabe Dabson leads in both goals and points while Tony Soprano is second for both. Is that enough to give offensive advantage to Philadelphia?
TPE +1, 58w

Having the top 2 players in points is pretty good. However I would say having the top 3-9 is even better. It's much easier to focus down on 2 players than it is to focus on 7 of them. Depth has always been San Francisco's specialty. They can roll 3 lines as good as any teams top line.

Code:
3. Cale Salad is currently 6 points ahead of next defencemen in points for these playoffs, if they keep it up could we see defenceman winning Anton Razov?
+1 TPE, 54w

While it is possible for Cale Salad to win the playoffs MVP, it is highly unlikely. Sure he leads defense in points, but he is a -4 in the playoffs which is awful. Scoring points is only good if you can stop the other team from scoring. In every other metric, Cale has been terrible.

4. High end offensive talent is cool and all but Justin Time is ahead of BASE PACK on save%, goals against average and goals saved above average. Can Philadelphia solve them or is it Time for another Challenge Cup in San Francisco?
+1 TPE, 60w

Goaltending is a much larger factor when it comes to overall performance. Justin Time has had to face the tougher road to get to the finals, and has better numbers to show for it. Pack has generally had solid numbers, but shown inconsistency through most of his career. While he is a champion, Time has had a more steady career.

6. Which team to miss out from the Finals was best in your opinion? Why them?
+1 TPE, 53w

The new England Wolfpack is probably the best team to have not made the finals. They have a very deep roster and were lead by one of the best players there is in Antoine Beauregard. They had a bit of a slip in the opening round and were not able to recover however.

I think it's more indicative of success if a team can maintain a playoff presence over an extended period of time. New England and Philadelphia are more impressive. Not only do they have long streaks of appearances, but they also have a good track record of finals appearances. Neither have had to year down their teams and stock pike picks for a couple of short term cup runs.

Obviously both Colorado and QCC are great teams that deserve to play for the Four Star Cup, that being said I'm going to go with Quebec City. QCC is usually very stacked and this year is no different. In the regular season they had the best scoring line in the league but that has seemed to slow done a little bit during the playoffs. In fact Colorado's top line has really been the standouts for these playoffs. That being said QCC leads in most of the head to head statistics including goals for, goals against, shots for and against and special teams. The only thing Colorado leads in is Faceoff %.

Prompt 12:

Last seasons IIHF was surprisingly good for Norway, it even shocked the players, who had assumed they would be mid-table, maybe pushing for a playoff spot. They exceeded all expectations and many would assume they can push on from there and do even better this season! That is something that the players and coaches themselves hope, they players will be a year more experienced, although that may work against the older players in regression! But will the other teams have worked out how to play against them in the intervening time? Inge Baardsen hopes not. He will most likely be covering a third line role with maybe some time on the PK, so his offensive output might not spike, but we could see a difference in his overall importance to the team. 10. But I thought you were tanking.

I think it is absolutely great that tanking is looking to be a thing if the past. I really think there is no better way to put a franchise into a meme like territory than to tank. It also makes it a no go for players who are looking to come in and make a difference in their prime. Personally I look at a team like Montreal and it is hard for me to accept they will ever be a successful franchise. They are so synonymous with a losing culture that when I see them putting up points I almost don't even register it. It then gets to a point where even if you draft a couple good players after a fire sale on your talent and assets the best they can really hope for is that they might be the grizzled veteran on a, maybe, good team. Who wants to be that? Endlessly spinning your tires in a losing atmosphere with nothing to show for it? I bet you are much more likely to be someone who says enough of this and recreates in hopes of ending up on a team that isn't in the pits. Personally, I think the tank hurts no one but the league you are in as a whole.

I think this could be a good season for our Swiss squad. We have some players that have been tracking well and while pre season is only pre season we have had some good results so far. Write your predictions for this year's IIHF tournament or WJC! Tell me about your team! What are your expectations for your player? What teams are you watching out for this time around? Did last season's results surprise you and how much do you expect them to change this time?

I'm gonna be predictable and make the real homer pick for the WJC this season. I was picked for team USA Blue, and I'm picking them to go the distance. We've got a strong roster full of experienced players, and I really think we can at least medal this time around. I hope that my player can contribute on both sides of the ice. I was a loaner for team Finland last season, and my player had almost zero impact on many of the games. It was disappointing for me, but I'm coming into this tournament capped at 425 for the first time so I think there's a lot of potential to have a more successful tournament this time! It was definitely a surprise to me that my player struggled as much as he did, especially since he had a pretty strong rookie season. I expect that to be much different this time around. We have a lot of SMJHL veterans on the team as well, who have been productive and successful on their respective teams, so I think at the end of the day the roster will be able to mesh very well and play a very strong game.

13. Written, 50 to 200+ words. Five Nation Tournament
The only international tournaments in SHL are WJC and IIHF but in real life we have had Olympics, World Cups and now the 4 Nation tournament. What kind of tournaments besides of IIHF and WJC you’d like to see in SHL? How they would be different from the current tournaments? How often they would be played and would they be played instead of current tournaments or would both be held at the same time? Or would you think it would be instead better to restructure current tournaments?

I really like the way that the SHL handles their international tournaments. The WJC tournament is something I really look forward to, as best-on-best showcases are something that I really enjoy in real life. If I had to suggest a new tournament, I’d suggest an Olympic style in-season one. In my mind, it would happen every four seasons, and would function very similarly to the way the IIHF tournament does. The only difference is that it would kind of mimic the real-life Olympics. The SHL would pause for a week and the tournament would take place during that week. It would feature all of the major nations that the actual Olympics do, with round robin play to determine matchups and seeds. I think it may be cool to fill out a full roster as well. That being 4 forward lines, 3 defensive pairs, and 2 goalies. Having a full roster could open up the possibility of SMJHL players or players who wouldn’t normally be picked for international teams to have a chance to represent a nation. I think it could be a fun shakeup of how the international tournaments usually play out, but also I’m unaware of the exact details that go into setting up tournaments and I recognize that it would be more work for all those involved, but it could also open up new jobs for everyone!
