S81 PT #2: Place To Be Due: Sunday, March 2nd @ 11:59 PM PST

A good expansion team required a few things. One, you need a solid brand identity. It needs to be consistent and some level of professional quality.we have long moved past the days of middling logos. Look at Hamilton's latest redesign.love it or hate it, that's a consistent and professional redesign. Coloring should typically be colors of three different values also. Edmonton does this by have a navy blue, lighter blue and a yellow. It allows for contrast.

You also need to look at the league as a whole. You can not be derivative of other logos. We had two logos with sticks getting broken and the league roasted them forever. Now we have Miami vice Tampa as a result.

The name can be referential to the locations history but you don't want to swing too heavy into it. The more niche the information, the more you lose others. Trust me. I pitched the Nevada Battleborn. I had to explain that one for a long time.

Written Option 2: What’s needed to make a good expansion is a good city and name that’s fun. AND NO THAT IS NOT A RANDOM CITY IN CANADA. First off no more Canadian teams there are so many it is not nessary to name another team after a random city in Canada. Two we have so many big important US city’s without a team pick one of those cities and work from there don’t go niche city go for a big hitter or 3. What I recommend is a team somewhere wild like on the moon or on mars or if you want to get less fun somewhere like London or hell if a team wants to go with a villain motif Russia china or North Korea something fun interesting and not the same generic city template. We have a normal baseline now it is time to go and get fun and out there for our league for storylines and just for good old plain old fun.

An expansion team needs more than just a catchy name or brand. To me it comes down to location. While it may be fun to have a team in say Mexico City, or even further into the equator like Brazil, realism wise it doesn’t make sense. Where is the medium or line that you want to draw In the simulation sand? Of course we could go all out and make it so all locations are free game but to me it would eliminate the actual little piece of realism the site has. With SHL expansion on the horizon you could always do a multi city team, such as an extra Toronto Team. With regards to encapsulating the cities heritage or what not, that can be a little easier to ignore in the sim league. The moment however a team pops up in Jamaica I will have some questions and reservations on that. Keep the league NA based but if you wan to extend to to more European countries at least make it make sense seasonal wise.

John Gibson has traveled many hours from city to city, whether it be by bus or plane. There are many inspiring and beautiful cities that Gibby had explored. However, the Vegas Lights and all the action seems to be unmatched to him. Whether it is enjoying a nice night at the bar (where he only enjoys soft drinks because he is not quite old enough) or a nice night at the casino, its always a great getaway spot. Another  spot Gibson has been enjoying since his recent draft into the SHL has been Baltimore. Since being drafted, he has gotten the opportunity to go down a couple times in the offseason to practice and learn about some of his new teammates. Whether that be Jordan in Kelowna, or Kami, who is going back to Detroit with Gibson anyway. Through these short times, it has been a great exploration of the SHL and SMJHL cities, and he’ll certainly be excited for the expansion.

During his first season in Kelowna, Jordan Lafrenière really liked one city in particular. Quebec city, and for one good reason: his family and friends are able to go see him play there as it is relatively close from Montreal ! Usually, Jordan loves to go take a walk on the plains of Abraham, when he has the time, outside of the team trainings and meetings! He also loves to go walk in the old part of Quebec city, and close from the Frontenac castle! The advantage with QCC being in the same division as Kelowna is that both teams play eachothers frequently, which ensures that Jordan never loses contact with his family. Even though it is QCC's home, who are divisional rivals, Jordan feels like he is at HIS home in Quebec. Many people recognise him and he is always gladly taking pictures with local fans! Lafrenière also loves to go eat a poutine, as he doesn’t always have the opportunity to because of his important schedule that takes the most of his days!

Nathangus McExplosion likes travelling around to play different opponents. His favorite place to go however is back in colorado to meet with the young raptor players that are soon going to be in the big league. This place is very high altitude and it is tough to breath while doing intense exercise but it is not a problem for the powerful nathangus. When it is the winter, the weather is very different from atlanta and other southern cities because there is a lot of snow and the temperatuire requires you to dress with very warm clothes. Its always funny to see how new people come and think its no big deal and then they get frosty haha. I think @goldenglutes loves the cold but im not sure, i know that @Renomitsu and @Bongo are quite cool and cihll however. I would also like to travel to baston but there is no SHL team in that old city.

Rasmus loves playing against Chicago because he gets to go and visit the bean. He also used to play in Chicago and has a lot of old friends in the area so it’s nice to go see them, grab dinner and visit the bean. He misses his old haunts and his neighbourhood. He also gets to go visit the bean. He also became a bit of a Cubs fan while living in Chicago, so whenever the seasons overlap he loves to find a way to catch a game at Wrigley, one of the more historic venues in the league. He also likes to visit the bean. Chicago also has The Beef, the restaurant from the Bear, so he looks to go in there and grab a sandwich (it’s pre-gourmet era still) and then get yelled at by the boys. Afterwards, he likes to take a nice walk over and visit the bean. Finally, he also just likes the hotel in Chicago. Nice spot, clean washrooms, crisp sheets.

I think that for an expansion team branding to be good, first of all there needs to be some significance with the team name and the city they are in. I think it is a lot more fun when there is some lore behind the team name and it makes sense contextually. I don't know that there is a specific city that I think really needs an SHL team, but in general I would say that it should be a city in North America. Even if this is a simulated league and everything is fake, there should be some semblance of realism to maintain the facade. You never see European teams in any of the major sports in the real world. I get that we don't have any of the same monetary or geographical restrictions that real life leagues has but i feel like it would be weird to have a single european team in a north american based league

My players favourite city to visit would be Vancouver, simply due to how big the city is and how much stuff we're able to do in our free-time after the few games we have there. My player tends to go out with his team-mates just to travel around the city and take it in, as its one of the most beautiful cities we are constantly going to. One of the places I love to go to when in Vancouver is the Bloedel Conservatory, simply because I love to just look at nature, and its full of it. Me and my team mates also try to catch any footy games (american football and european football) at BC Place, simply because its an amazing experience everytime we are able to catch a game there. The final place I tend to visit is the digital orca since its so simple, yet its just so memorable for myself so I always try to go there for good luck.

i believe that enlightened centrist of the simulation major junior hockey leagues colorado raptors would like to visit vancouver the most. beign that he is from fiji, vancouver has i believe the largest fijian population outside of the pacific ocean. many fijians have immigrated from fiji to vancouver in search of a better opportunity for themselves and their kids. many charity events and gatherings of fijians, displaying fijian tradition, culture, sport, and food, take place in vancouver. enlightened centrist of the simulation major junior hockey leagues colorado raptors loves to keep in touch with his upbringing, and being a very large figure in sport, perhaps the most popular fijian, gives him a unique position to enable himself to create support systems for fijian youth that are looking for help with anything, whether it be financial, mental health, job oppurtunities, general advice, etc. this way, the community of vancouver can grow along with the fijian community.

Written Option 2:

In real life, I think the most important part of an expansion location is the fan base to support it even before the team has any success. That means having a big enough population, especially when competing with other sports in the area, and it means having an arena that's accessible to enough fans on a daily basis. The brand should have some basis in the area so that fans can tap into hometown pride. If there are other sports, getting close to the color scheme is a big plus. I say all this as a Seattle Kraken season ticket holder.

How does this translate to the SHL? Well, the fans that support the expansion teams are mainly the players who play there. The locker room is important and the management needs to get buy in on building a team. Focus on drafting for year 3-5 and get a core that grows into it together. Don't swing for a halfway good team and then get stuck in mediocrity. For location and brand, I would pick something off-script that wouldn't get a team in real life because it's a fantasy that folks can buy in to. While I loved my time on Montreal, it felt wrong because I'm a Bruins fan in real life. If there's hockey team with no real life counterpart, it's easier to get fully into it.

Many people consider Twinkle Toes a true cold weather animal and they would be right. Twinkle loves travelling to anchorage for the weather. Well, at least when it can be safety enjoyed outside. The feeling of the sun on their face in minus temperatures can't be beat. As a true polar animal they are much more comfortable at minus 30 than plus 30. In fact they often can feel themselves melting at any temperature above freezing. When not enjoying the frigid outside weather, like when there's a blizzard going on, you can find Twinkle relaxing in their hotel room playing some sort of colony builder/simulation game like dwarf fortress. Thankfully, Anchorage doesn't have much of a nightlife. Or restaurants or really much to do. Not that our favourite shut in would know! So Twinkle doesn't feel pressured into going out with teammates and can spend all their spare time watching their newest colony implode.
