Vancouver Whalers (2-6-0) vs. Colorado Raptors (2-3-1)

Hello and welcome to the recap of the first game of the season! Today is October 4th, 2020 and today’s game took place in the Pacific Coliseum in Vancouver, British Columbia with a HUGE turnout of over 8000 fans! Tonight we’re viewing the Vancouver Whalers vs. the Colorado Raptors. Let us dive into the recap.

Period One

We start the game off with a faceoff won by Petrovic for the Whalers. Colorado quickly gains control of the puck with Barkov attempting to score against Vacouvers goalie of the game, Redacted. The rest of the period goes by with both teams exchanging equal amounts of shots on goal, unfortunately, none making it in yet.

Period Two

Less than a minute in we see the first goal of the game come from Ryosuke Sato, one of the Whalers’ alternate captains! This goal was assisted by Alessandrini and Shuffleboard. Vancouver continues to keep the pressure on Colorado with several more shots on goal, at about the 10-minute mark another one goes in for Vancouver! The goal was made by Bryce McMahon with an assist from Slimey Snail. Not much later we see two penalties given out to the Raptors; one to Carlos Brown, and another to Anrijs Asts both two minutes. In the last two minutes of the game, we see yet another goal from Bryce McMahon! With assists from Alessandrini and Shuffleboard! Vancouver is now up 3-0! Colorado has kept up their shots on goal but Redacted has shown he is a force to be reckoned with.

Period Three

This brings us into the last period, in which the majority of this period is spent with both teams attempting to score back and forth. The area is playing a popular song by Doja Cat called “MOOO!” which we can hear the crowd singing along with the iconic lyric “bitch I’m a cow, bitch I’m a cow.” Three quarters in the last period, we see a fourth and final goal for the Vancouver Whalers from their team captain Sven Ykskaft with the assist from rookie Wile E Coyote and from the rookie, and previous DFA to the Whalers, Devin Basher!

Stars

Our first star for todays game is Name Redacted, the goalie for the Whalers with a total of 32 saves this game! Redacted was on his A-game today and it paid off with a 4-0 win.

Our second star is Bryce McMahon from Vancouver with 2 goals this game! His high defensive and offensive read, as well as his puckhandling really helped him nail those two goals for the Whalers tonight.

Our third and final star is Johnny Shuffleboard from Vancouver with 2 assists! Shuffleboard is really starting this season off with a bang, can’t wait to see more from him.

That concludes todays recap, thank you, everyone, for tuning in. Make sure to check out our next game recap of game 2, Detroit Falcons vs. Maine Timber.

Party Starter

This game was all Whalers but who got the party started? Well it was Ryosuke Sato with the first goal of the season just 50 seconds into the 2nd period. The first period was scoreless but Sato scored this even strength goal assisted by Domenic Alessandrini and Johnny Shuffleboard. Sato finished the night with a nice 69 game rating. He is a right defenseman and he had a +2 rating on the night. He had 4 shots total and 3 missed as he was firing them all night long. He finished with over 23 minutes of ice time and was a star out there for the Whalers.

Comment 2

Small Minute Men

The ice team leaders are great but let's look at the players with the least ice time. On Colorado we see Goumundur Kristjansson with 8:23 time on ice. He was a +/- of 0 and had 1 single shot on net. He wasn't a liability in his limited minutes which is great for a rookie forth liner. He finished with a very strong 64 game rating and could see his minutes go up as the season goes on. On the Whalers we see Left winger Kyle Izzy who is another rookie. He finished with 9:16 of ice time for the winners. He had a 54 game rating and blocked 1 shot and added 2 hits. He couldn't get much going offensively in his limited role but the season is young.

Comment 3

Goalie Battle

The goalie battle was very clearly won here as the Whalers netminder managed to snag a shutout. Name Redacted finished with 32 saves for a perfect 100 game rating. He could not have been better and the Whalers really owe the 2 points to him. On the Raptors it wasn't the same story as Samat Beibitzhanov struggled big time. With only 25 shots against he let in 4 of them for a 0.840 SV% that is just not good enough at this level. It was the first game of the year and he will bounce back very well as he is a pro. Just getting some rust out of the legs for these guys but if the Whalers can get Name Redacted playing this well all season they have a shot to sneak into the playoffs.

Comment 1 - In the Beginning

This is the first game of the regular season for both of these teams, and each are looking to make a statement. Vancouver, coming off of a disappointing S53, has seen some growth from their now sophomore players, as well as seeing a few more 425 TPE capped players. This is a brand-new start, and the Whalers are hoping to capitalize on the clean slate to set the pace for a more successful SMJHL campaign this season. Last season the Whalers were 17-30-3, tied for last in the SMJHL with the newly relocated Maine Timber.

Colorado was is a similar place as Vancouver, near the bottom of the West, and edged out the Whalers with a few more wins to take 4th spot in the conference, and the final playoff position, in S53. Colorado has both added and lost some talent, but overall looks to have grown over the offseason. Last season the Raptors held down a 20-27-3 record, sliding into the playoffs in the last week of play. Name Redacted and Samat Beibitzhanov, both goaltending prospects for the Manhattan Rage, duel tonight as the starting goaltenders of the Whalers and Raptors, respectively.

Comment 2 - Unsung heroes for each team

Colorado - Carlos Brown: Although Carlos Brown may not have made the score sheet, and also appears as a -1 on the night, he was clearly the MVP for the Raptors this evening, as he was all over the ice. Clearly leading the Raptors with six shots on net, he also was a positive contributor to Colorado's possession game, throwing 3 big hits and taking the puck off of a Whalers player twice, all while not conceding a single giveaway himself. His OGR was an impressive 90, and his total GR was a respectable 81. Not bad for a player on a team that didn't score a goal tonight.

Vancouver - William Hartmann: While not registering a point in a game that Vancouver capitalized on, and although Redacted will likely earn top marks for earning the season's first Shutout, Hartmann deserves a special mention for his consistent two-way play that kept the Whlaers on top. Leading all forwards in DGR this game, Hartmann delivered 1 hit and blocked 2 shots, as well as tying for the Vancouver lead in ice time for forwards with 22:23 on the ice. Hartmann's overall GR of 74 also led all skaters tonight.

Comment 3 - 3 Stars

Our three stars of the night come, unsurprisingly, from the Vancouver Whalers:

First Star: Name Redacted, Vancouver Whalers
As is typical for a goalie who makes a bunch of saves in a game without letting in a goal, the 32-save shutout is the reason the Chinese goalkeeper Name Redacted takes top honours for the game. Despite Vancouver being outshot by the Raptors 32-25, Redacted made the difference in commanding fashion, getting the first shutout of the S54 SMJHL season in his first season start.

Second Star: Bryce McMahon, Vancouver Whalers
Early days yet, but McMahon now leads the SMJHL in goals after 1 day of games. Joking aside, an impressive performance saw McMahon pot two goals for the Whalers tonight, the first coming at even strength and the second on the Powerplay, with a brilliant tic-tac-toe between McMahon, rookie Dominic Alessandrini, and Johnny Shuffleboard.

Third Star: Johnny Shuffleboard, Vancouver Whalers
While both Shuffleboard and Dominic Alessandrini earned two apples tonight, Shuffleboard has the edge as the defenseman, being a strong two-way force on the ice, and whom without the defensive side of Vancouver's game may not have shone as brightly as it did tonight.

Statement Start

After a season that saw the Whalers finish bottom in the West with a 17-30-3 record Vancouver reloaded in the draft and entered the season hoping to forget their latest disappointment and boy oh boy did they put that behind them.  Against a weak opponent (Colorado finished just one spot ahead of Vancouver in the West last season) the Whalers did what any team with playoff aspirations is supposed to do.  They thoroughly dominated both ends of the ice en route to a 4-0 dismantling of the Raptors.  Hopefully for the fans this is a sign of things to come for the remainder of the season and they won’t have to wait long to find out.  Vancouver’s next test is against last year’s West champions the Kelowna Knights.

129 Words

More of the same?

Last year’s bottom of the barrel finish for Colorado looked to be an aberration, but after getting completely shut out in a 4-0 route at the hands of the only team to finish below them in the West last year one has to wonder if this is the new norm for Colorado and they should commit to the rebuild.  And while the final result isn’t what they wanted there are some positives for Colorado on the rest of the stat sheet.  They outperformed Vancouver in damn near every statistical category outside of the scoreboard.  Hopefully for the Raptors today’s game was just a case of running into a hot goalie and not a sign of the season to come.

Some Good Clean Fun

While this trend is all but certain not to continue it was nice to start out with a game with a combined 4 penalty minutes by both sides, all by Colorado.  There’s the good, what was alarming at the time though was that the two penalties were back to back in the second period resulting in almost a full 4 minutes on the PK with a little three on five sprinkled in for good measure.  The fact that Vancouver failed to capitalize on such an extended power play should raise some concern, but with how well they performed outside of special teams I’m sure they can address the problems this week at practice.

Comment One (212 Words)
Three Stars of the Game Analysis
1. Name Redacted
A shutout for the Vancouver goalie against 32 shots is unsurprisingly enough to give him the first star of this game. His team helped him out by having a strong defensive game (6 players with 70 or better DGR) and 19 blocked shots (only three players didn't block a shot). Bing at full strength the whole game helped too, as the Whalers took zero PIM opposed to the four from Colorado.

2. Bryce McMahon
McMahon dominated this game offensively, scoring an even-strength and a power-play goal, and tied for the second-highest offensive game rating on the team. If it weren't for the shutout from Redacted, it would be easy to put him in the first-star slot with his 66% shooting percentage in only 12 minutes of ice time.

3. Johnny Shuffleboard
The rookie Shuffleboard gets the third star here with two assists and six hits. What's interesting here is that compared to his fellow defenseman, Shuffleboard actually had the lowest defensive game rating by quite a large margin (59 compared to the next lowest at 70), but was tied for the third-highest offensive game rating on the team. You can see where the priorities lie for this rookie defenseman, and it's not on the home side of the ice.

Comment Two (129 Words)
Hartmann Robbed?
Many in the Vancouver locker room were expecting Left Wing William Hartmann to be awarded one of the stars of the game, as he ended with the highest offensive game rating and the second-highest defensive game rating (impressive for a Left Wing), which together gave him the best overall game rating. With 4 shots, 2 blocked shots and a hit in the second most time on the ice, Hartmann really put his all into this game but came away empty-handed, no star and no points to show for his efforts. However, if he can utilize his copious amount of ice time and connect any of his numerous shots with the back of the net, he could definitely be a force to be reckoned with in the season going forward.

Comment Three (104 words)
BeibitzhaNOT?
Raptors goaltender Samat Beibitzhanov had a rough game against the Whalers, letting in 4 goals on only 25 shots for a save percentage of only .84. The third goal was with a shorthanded team, but it still meant that he'd have to turn it around if he wanted to save face. Unfortunately, not only did he not save face, but he also failed to save an additional shot, resulting in the final score of 4-0. Luckily, this save percentage is way under his season average of .91, so the Raptors really shouldn't have anything to worry about aside from SHL teams playing him illegally.

Comment One: Goaltending Woes in Colorado (120 Words)

Throughout the game Colorado mustered up 32 shots, while Vancouver had just 25. Still, Vancouver was the one who scored 4 times, while Colorado didn’t score once. Recording a shutout, Name Redacted had a great performance, and was probably the biggest difference maker of the night, which got him a well earned 1st star of the night. On the flip side of that, Colorado’s goaltending left something to be desired. With 4 goals scored on just 25 shots, and a save percentage of .625, it was a brutal night for the Raptors netminder. Colorado is going to struggle to win games with that kind of goaltending. Here’s hoping they get some better performances out of their netminders in the future.

Comment Two: Vancouver has to clean up their act (146 Words)

While they might have got the win tonight, it wasn’t pretty. As mentioned before, they were outshot, and can’t expect to be bailed out by bad goaltending from the opposition moving forward. Along with being outshot, they had 9 giveaways, to Colorado’s 2. That’s brutal. It’s a miracle they didn’t get punished for any of those 9 giveaways. If you are giving up the puck that much on a nightly basis, you are going to struggle in terms of possession, and better teams will be able to dominate against you. They were also down in the faceoff department, and less physical. The only thing they had going for them was their goaltending, and their discipline (they took 0 penalties). While these are good things to build off of, they need to sharpen up the rest of their game if they want to climb up the standings.

Comment Three: Rookies Shine for Vancouver (113 Words)

The Whalers have some experienced players on their team who you would expect to be leading the charge on any given night, but in this game, a lot of the rookies had good nights. Defensemen Johnny Shuffleboard recorded 2 assists, along with forward Domenic Alessandrini, as they were a big part in Vancouver’s second period onslaught. Later in the game, forward’s Wile Coyote, and Devin Basher would get helpers, to help seal the deal for the team. Getting production out of 4 of your rookies is huge, and a good sign for the Whalers moving forward. Just imagine what they could have done if some more of the veterans were on their game.

Whalers Steal One
Now heading into this game, we would not say one team was a favorite to win. Both teams are definitely struggling to put up wins this season and did not get off to hot starts. But Colorado came out like a team with a purpose tonight, they looked much better than the Whalers. Quite frankly, this might have been one of the most complete games the Raptors played and they were not able to get the win. Why might you ask? Well, it was simple, Name Redacted stood on his head for the Whalers and stole them the game. The Whalers can't continue to play like this if they want to win.

Comment One: Sato scores
Sato scored to start the season for the Whalers. Last season he had just 2 goal all year. With knocking in his first tonight, is he on his way to a better season? Sato has openly talked about trying to score more throughout the offseason, and he stated with a bang getting the Whalers on the board first in this game. Playing a large amount of time this season with captain Sven Yxskaft, who had 24 points last season including 19 helpers, we expect Sato to improve on both his goals and point total from last season. Can Sato continue on a great rookie campaign?
(105 words)

Comment Two: Vancouver Rookies in on the Rivalry
These two teams were involved in some late season madness last season with Colorado just edging out Vancouver for the final playoff spot in the West. Will this turn into a major rivalry? If it does Vancouver's rookies seem to be very involved early, with Johnny Shuffleboard getting two points, Domenic Alessadnri getting two points, Devin Basher getting a point, and Wile Coyote getting a point. Of them only Shuffleboard was a DFA for Vancouver's late season collapse. The only three must have been told about the bad blood that is set to develop between these two teams if they duke it out for the last spot in the West again.
(111 words)

Comment three: Redacted picks up where he left off
At the final buzzer Name Redacted was quickly mobbed by his teammates like all goalies are after regulation wins. For Redacted this was his first shutout of the season. Redacted had three shutouts last season and he will look to build on that over this season. His team did him no favors, he led the league in shots faced last season, and once again Vancouver got outshot, 32-25. For the Whalers to be successful this season they will rely on Redacted to have another big season. They may want to improve that defense in front of him and try to allow less shots. Or they can allow Redacted to continue to bail them out.

Comment 1: Interview with Whalers' GM @dmills3

1. Right now Whalers sits at the bottom of the standings but at the first few games you weren't that bad. Was this the best Whalers' game this season?
dmills3: This was definitely up there in terms of best games for us this season. The only other option was a 4-0 win against Detroit where Redacted made 39 saves. So this game against Colorado is tied for our best game this season.

2. You lost next two games against Raptors. Did Raptors play better or Whalers - worser?
dmills3: I think a little bit of both. Colorado has a good team and they've been getting better as the season goes on, but it's hard to ignore how bad the Whalers were after that game against Colorado. We won a game against St Louis after, but then lost 10 in a row, so we arguably got worst.

3. Name Redacted played an outstanding game. Who else had a great performance?
dmills3: Bryce McMahon also had a great game against the Raptors, where he scored 2 goals, his first 2 of the season. Dominic Alessandrisi and Johnny Shuffleboard also had great games, both racking up 2 assists in the game.

(196 words)

Comment 2: Interview with Raptors' GM @LordBirdman

1. Whalers is one of the weakest teams this season. What happened in this game? Why Whalers outplayed Raptors?
LordBirdman: This was the first game of the season for Colorado and we were still figuring out our best line combinations and tactics.  We came out of the gates as slow as possible and knew we were a better team than to get shut out by lowly Vancouver.

2. Raptors had 32 shots this game. Why you didn't manage to score a goal?
LordBirdman: Despite pouring the pressure on the Whalers, we just couldn't get one past Name Redacted.  He made some great saves and made the game look like it wasn't very close when in reality it was a tight contest.  Name Redacted played incredibly well and deserved the shut out in this one.

3. Raptors managed to win next 2 games against Whalers. Did you make some tactical adjustments?
LordBirdman: After our first couple of games, we made a number of changes to our lines and tactics.  We have since found our groove and are playing really well, having just recently beaten up on conference opponents Kelowna and Anchorage.  We are now fighting to get the best seeding possible to make a deep playoff run!

(206 words)

Comment 3: Interview with Raptors' player Carlos Brown @CB2212

1. This was Raptors' first game of the season. What happened in this game? Why you weren't able to score goals?

Carlos Brown: Sometimes the game just doesn't go your way, we had made some changes in the offseason and there was an adjustment period for sure.

2. Despite a big loss, you had a great individual game. You ended with game rating of 81. What is more important to you - winning games or individual acknowledgements?
Carlos Brown: Winning games of course, I don't know what goes into game rating and I don't much care, it didn't help us in not getting shutout so I'd take a lower GR in exchange for a W.

3. You had 6 shots on goal in this game. Do you usually have so many shots in a game?
Carlos Brown: 6 shots is a lot, especially when none of them go in. I try to go for quality over quantity but if the chances are there I'm gonna take them.

Star Power
The veterans of the Vancouver Whalers showed up to play tonight, scoring half of the games goals. The two d-men, Captain Sven Yxskaft and alternate Ryosuke Sato, set the Whalers up for success in the first game of the S54 SMJHL season, Sato especially so as he scored the eventual game winning goal. The sophomore Sato and soon to be graduate Yxskaft didn't just let their presence be felt on the scoreboard, they boasted the second and third best skaters game rating for the game, behind William Hartmann. The captain had a 71 rating while Sato has 69 (nice) on the night. In a season where the Whalers are hoping to compete, a lot of their success rides on the captain's shoudlers, and this is a great way to start a hopeful season for the Whalers.

Young Guns
The S54 draft held immediate dividends for the Whalers squad as their most recent draftees had a big impact on the scoreboard. First up is the third overal pick Johnny Shuffleboard, who picked up two assists on the night, tying him for the lead in points coming out of game 1. Noice. Next up on the draft board for the Whalers was Devin Basher. The former DFA of the Whalers made his return to the club via the 12th overall pick, and used the familiarity of the team to his advantage as he collected a point in his first game. Just 5 picks later we have Dominc Alessandrini. Alessandrini and Shuffleboard were quite the pair together as the chain of a shuffleboard pass to Alessandrini to other play to back of net happened twice in the second frame. We skip past Nikiforov to Wile Coyote in the 32nd overall pick. You guessed it because I'm mentioning him, but he also picked up an assists on Yxskaft's final tally of the night, cementing a night of 6 points earned for the rookie class in game 1. The future is bright in Vancouver, that's for sure. Just don't ask about the present.

A New Season???
A big storyline coming into todays game is the competition between the two worst teams in the East last year. Last season we saw teams finish 6 points apart, as they competed for the "honor" of facing the second best team in the league, Kelowna. For missing out on the playoffs to the Raptors, Vancouver was knocked down a spot by Newfoundland to draft 3rd overall. They picked the already impactful Johnny Shuffleboard with the pick, while Colorado took Guomundur Kristjansson, who was not as impactful. In a matchup between these two teams it was Vancouver who left with the upper hand, getting revenge on the team who beat them out for the playoffs. A big part of this was Name Redacted and his strong play tonight. Last season Vancouver boasted the 3rd worse GA in the league at 151, but after tonight they've allowed 0. That is a difference of 151 goals. Is this a sign that Vancouver is now built to contend this season? With a strong performance by their veterans and rookies alike? Only time well tell.

COMMENT 1: Beibetzhonov’s struggles (109 words)

Samat Biebetzhanov had one of those nights against the Whalers. After being a relatively strong goaltender for the Colorado Raptors for the majority of the season--in fact having a .910% save percentage. This previous success however did not translate well into the game against the conference worst Whalers. Samat only faced 25 shots throughout the game while letting 4 goals find the back of the net. These types of struggles left the Raptors out to find a way to answer back with goals of their own. Unfortunately, despite getting 32 shots on net the Raptors and Samat Beibetzhanov couldn’t score a goal and fell 4-0 to the Vancouver Whalers.

COMMENT 2: A Rookie Success Continues (105 words)

Third Overall pick Johnny Shuffleboard continues his success as the season progresses. This obviously wasno exception in this game. Having a strong game, thus getting the third star of the match. Shuffleboard recorded two assists while showing further chemistry with fellow rookie teammate Dominic Alessandrini. Along with picking up two points, Shuffleboard was able to play a well rounded two way game which helped his goaltender Name Redacted pick up his first shutout of the season. During the season and earlier in his DFA year, critics wondered about Shuffleboard’s priorities. However, if he continues to put up numberslike these he'll quiet the critics for sure.

COMMENT 3: Redacted Plays Strong (115 words)

Name Redacted has had a really rocky start to Season 54 after a strong campaign in Season 53. This may be due in large part to the major struggles that his team has had defensively. However, Redacted was able to shake these struggles off as he strided to a 32 save shutout. This helped bolster Redacted game rating to a 100 and earned him first star of the game. The chinese goaltender earned his first shutout of the season and hopes for can come in the future. For this to happen though, the defensive structure for the Whalers needs to be as strong as tonight, as the Whalers blocked 19 of the 51 attempted shots.

Two Teams Looking to Get Back on Track
This game features two teams that had a bit of a rough go to start the season. Coming into this game the Colorado Raptors were 2-2-1 and the Whalers 1-5. Both of these teams find themselves at the bottom of the Western Conference early and want to fix them as soon as possible as going down early could be trouble later in the season. With a win the Whalers grab their second win of the season to move to 2-6 and the Raptors loss drops them below .500 to 2-3-1. Both of these teams are going to have to pick it up further if they want to keep pace with the Outlaws and The Knights.

Rookies Gone Wild
Rookie Domenic Alessandrini had quite the game for the Whalers in their 4-0 win over Colorado. The S54 Draftee and rookie recorded his first two SMJHL career assists. The young winger is looking to make an impact on a young Whalers team and gain on his impressive rise on the draft boards. Another impressive showing is for 3rd overall pick Johnny Shuffleboard who record his first two assists of his SMJHL career as well. The rookie defenseman is showing great poise and offensive skills early. As a rookie in the SMJHL points can be hard to come by which makes a two point performance that much more impressive for Alessandrini and Shuffleboard in this game.

Big Win?
This win for the Whalers would prove to be a big one as they have not won much as we are over the mid-way point of the season. The Whalers have a measly 11 points on the season and are struggling. They have since traded star player Yskaft to Carolina and are still struggling. They are a young squad who has a lot to learn, but the future tells them to hold onto this win closely because they will not be doing much of it later on in the season. The Whalers currently find themselves in the basement by over 10 points and do not have much to look forward to other than players developing this season.

Selfless Players (Losing Team)

Simothy Drunkebird left it all out on the ice. The Raptors captain leads by example by doing everything he can to help his team. Drunkebird had 27 shifts which was most on Colorado. Of his 22 plus minutes of ice time, he logged 2 minutes and 6 seconds on the penalty kill unit. He blocked 3 shots, had 3 hits, got a Defensive Game Rating of 65, which isn’t bad considering Colorado lost 0-4.
Anrijs Asts also posted a very respectable game in the loss. The defenseman had a 78 DGR. He also had 3 blocked shots and 5 hits. He logged the most time on ice for the Raptors and spent almost 2 minutes on the penalty kill.

Surprising Offense

The Whalers won the game 4-0. The goalie, Name Redacted, had an amazing game (100 GR). But what is really surprising is that no Vancouver Whaler had an Offensive Game Rating over 68, and that player was William Hartman, who did not contribute on the scoreboard. Only 5 other Whalers had above a 60. Maybe they knew that Name Redacted was on top of his game so they didn’t need to be on top of their offensive game. Bryce McMahon, Johnny Shuffleboard, Ryosuke Sato, and Domenic Alessandrini are the other 4 players posting 60 or better. It definitely looks like the team played more of a defensive game once they had a hold on the lead. Seems to have worked out for Vancouver.

Whaling

The Whalers definitely rode their first game on the backs of the 1st line. The trio of Stracimir Petrovic at center, Walito Gretzky at right wing, and William Hartman at left wing performed admirably in the game. The top guys were on the ice for 40 shifts together, producing 22 minutes of on-ice time and all were on the power play together as well. Even though this trio did not get on the scoresheet, the chemistry between the 3 players looks to be strong, and it will only grow stronger as the season goes on. The 3rd line was the one that did most of the damage tonight, scoring 2 of the 4 goals, and a pair of defenseman added the other 2.

Comment 1: Second Period Woes (130 words)

After the first intermission both teams took completely different stances on how the game should play out. The Colorado Raptors continued their style of playing business as usual and didn't alter there strategy from the first to the second period and that would lead to their downfall. A moving speech by the struggling Whaler's coach lit a fire under his team during the first intermission and broke the stalemate that we saw in the first period. This is the opposite of King Midas, every time the Raptors touched the puck the play died and the Whalers had an another chance to score. This period really set the tone for the rest of the game and you could see that the game had escaped from the Colorado Raptors and their players.

Comment 2: Bold Strategy (101 words)

Much like the Germans in WW2 the Whalers used somewhat of a blitzkrieg strategy shooting on all front and applying immense pressure on the Colorado Raptor team while utilizing their speed to punish the Raptors. That slow first period had the Raptors feeling complacent and that they could easily dismantle a 2-6 Whalers team but what they didn't expect was the Whaler strategy that was adopted in the 2nd period. The Raptors were not given any space to breath and were taken by surprise by the Whaler's strategy adjustment after the first that they knew they would lose this battle.

Comment 3 : Looking forward (142 words)

The Whalers have been struggling thus far this season but can take solace in their dominating victory here against the Colorado Raptors. They need to build off this win and implement similar types of strategies against the other teams they face as I feel that some teams do sleep on this Whaler's squad, which can be a deadly mistake as we saw here tonight. The Colorado Raptors did everything wrong and honestly just need to take the night off and reset for the next game. They cannot let this game linger in the back of their minds. There was no one person to blame for this loss and it was a team effort as a whole, I expect bag skates after this performance. Look for a big game from Colorado Raptors in the next game they play after being humiliated versus Vancouver.

Comment 1: Goalie Battle
This game, as it would seem, appears to be a pretty one sided goalie battle. On the winning side we have Name Redacted, with a 32 save shutout. This very well kept Vancouver into the game in this one and it makes total sense that he was considered the first star of this game. A shutout alone is impressive, but taking 32 shots in the process makes it an even bigger achievement. Now we look at the Colorado Raptors, they played Jerry Huuveri. He had a pretty rough performance, letting in 4 out of 25 shots with a very rough .160 save percentage. To his defense, the goalie on the other team just had a better game, the Raptors outshot the Whalers 32 to 25. Name Redacted Wins. (128 words)

Comment 2: Star Analysis
This game proved to be very lopsided towards the Whalers, with the key players all being highlighted in the three stars. The first star, Name Redacted, was the goalie. He posted a 32 save shutout which is very impressive considering his team got out shot. The second star we had in this game was Bryce McMahon. I feel that he was a key member of the offense in this game, he scored two goals, they were the second and third goals of the league putting the Raptors in the lead. Lastly, we have Johnny Shuffleboard. Another key member to the offense in this game, he assisted in the go ahead goal for the Whalers and helped put them in the lead. Overall I agree with all of these picks and think they were crucial members to the Whalers winning this game. (141 words)

Comment 3: Defensive Overview
Given the score of the game you would assume that this was no contest and that Vancouver won this game by a landslide, but it was actually quite close. Vancouver had a whopping nine giveaways to Colorado's two, a clear win in the Colorado column. In addition, Colorado had twenty two hits in comparison to Vancouver's seventeen another win for Colorado. This shows that Colorado was playing very hard in the forecheck, unfortunately it didn't show up in the score board. So when you take a closer look into this game it actually seems like this was winnable by both sides but Vancouver's goalie made the saves and played his game to come out with the win. (121 words)
