The Calgary Dragons may have had the draft of a lifetime. There is buzz around the SHL that the most recent draft class may have put Calgary into top contention on the best prospect pool in the entire SHL. The future is definitely bright in Calgary, and a few members of the team all just had to have something to say. Whether it’s a recent FA signing like Poroshenko, the leaders of the team or even just fellow prospects, everyone is excited. Here is what a few of them had to say when asked about the most recent draft and the overall prospect core of the team.

“Tell me someone who looks at Calgary’s prospect thread and is not absolutely impressed by all the talent and potential! Only a blind person is unable to see how star studded they are on offense and on the back end. They even have arguable one of the most up and coming goaltender in the SHL as S54 Cale Amundsen has made quite the resume in the smjhl. Not to mention SMJHL God Mats Marner who absolutely obliterated every team he played. And who could forget Daddy, his family has one of the best reputations for winning, so hopefully that means there’s a lot of success coming to Calgary in the near future.  While Barkov is no longer considered a prospect, it will also be exciting to see Chris Goodname this season as he is now Calgary’s number one defensive prospect. He’s really starting to master the two way defender game in the SMJHL and it’s always a rare sight to see a defender who can be able to do it all, but Chris pulls it off somehow

With regards to this specific draft class of S56, (besides myself) I am really looking forward to the development of Sachimo Zoidberg III. Like I don’t even need to see his roster page, a player with an epic name like that can’t disappoint! I’m still learning how to pronounce it, but soon the whole league will know his name! All jokes aside I’m shocked when I saw he’s reached the 350 tpe cap in his first ever smjhl season, that is always impressive and it’s a sign of his strong work ethic that is very hard to match. Why he even makes me a little embarrassed of my progression so far, but maybe his work ethic will rub off on me now that we’re teammates.

Thomas Rose is a great pickup as well at #31. While I’m sure we’ll have some friendly competition, I feel like that will only make the both of us push harder in training camp.”

- Boris "The Beast" Poroshenko (The__Y-man__100)

“This was a really interesting draft which had a lot of prep work. At first glance we really wanted to bring back some of our longtime and historic dragons who were eligible to be drafted. Players like Jala and Wongy... Who are already in our locker room with an established presence. But you know how these drafts go.. you never know what’s going to happen so we put together after extensive discussions a tier one list of players we’d like to select with that 13th pick. Players like Evans, Wasty and some new blood in Funk to name a few.

When the 13th pick came, surprisingly all of our possibilities outside the funk were available! Ultimately we chose the guy that we touted which is always a great thing in a draft! With our second pic selection 31 we decided to go the opposite route and bring in a highly excitable first generation player named Thomas Rose who I had great talks with before the draft. Through those talks i felt that big blue had the personality to fit in and enjoy our locker room, Which is important to me. Thus far Rose has been everything we hoped for...he’s active, engaged, a good team mate and has that attribute that wants to win!
With pick number 37 we brought in Logan, the son of Hunter Wong..our great backstop of yesteryear! This closed the book on a great draft for us and hopefully put to rest the great Baltimore swipe of s40... where the platoon traded for the pick before ours and grabbed Wongy from us! A dastardly deed by the platoon that took Good guy Esa seasons to get over!

Bradley Barkov, Mats Marner, Cale Admundsen, Chris Goodname, Mack Daddy, Sachimo Zoidberg III, Logan Wong, Thomas Rose and Keisuke Suzuki —-> This In my opinion and I say this in honesty is the greatest set of prospects this franchise has ever had at any one single time. It’s the quality of this group that excites me, there are franchises with a lot more prospects than we have but we believe that the group in the juniors are all players who will come up and be major contributors to the next generation of dragons!”

“This draft was exhausting, and I didn't even do that much. It was hectic watching the Calgary Dragons sit down in the war room, solely focused on business. The coffee maker was constantly running, there was no room to relax or slow down. Between manning the sheets, making the trade calls, covering our spies and investigative journalism, everyone had a job to do. It was one thing to prep for a Juniors draft, but we knew this big leagues draft was going to be huge for us. And by god was it. The pickups were already impressing us by the first night, seeing their faces light up as the names were called was a magical experience. I'm glad it looked like the prospects enjoyed it, because we couldn't be happier to bring them onboard. These players are going to be the future of the team, big time! We know they're going to do great things and we can't wait to see it happen”

- Joseph Weston (ACapitalChicago)

“This was an important draft for Calgary, we held 3 picks in the top 37 and knew we had a big opportunity to add some key players to what's become a very strong Dragons prospect group. There were a lot of great looking 1st gen and recreates in this draft so we knew we'd have good options at #’s 13, 31 and 37. You never know how it's going to go on draft day, we always try and get as much info as we can about the early picks so we can project who may be available at our pick in the 1st, the rest of the draft is kind of a crap shoot. We put our guys to work and they gathered info that turned out to be very accurate and allowed us to narrow down the field that may be there at pick 13. We liked a handful of players there but nobody fit as well as Sachimo Zoidberg III, a former dragons legend and all around great guy, we knew we'd be getting an awesome member who'd fit in seamlessly and was capable of making another star player. I was especially excited to call the Zoidberg name on draft day and bring him back home to Calgary. I even think he was a bit of a steal at 13 given his pedigree. We then waited what seemed like forever until pick 31 where we again had a handful of 1st gens and recreates we liked for that pick. One player that stood out to us in scouting was Thomas Rose and it’s been a couple seasons since we drafted a true 1st gen, he was pretty high on our board, much higher than 31 so we decided to make him a Dragon and it’s already working out great. He’s already broke 330tpe after the draft and has great potential to be a star in this league. He’s brought the kind of enthusiasm and activity we were hoping for in the room also, we’re very excited about his potential.

When pick 37 came around we again had a few players that would have been great picks, but the connection with recreate Logan Wong and the Dragons was too strong to pass up. His father Hunter was a Dragons legend and we again knew we’d be getting a great person who’s made 3 great players in the past. He got off to a bit of a slow start in development in the J but has picked it up recently and since the draft has shown he wants to make another great player and champion. Wong’s know how to succeed in Calgary and he’s playing with a chip on his shoulder so watch out. This is going to be a great value pick for the Dragons. Overall I would have to say this draft went very well for Calgary... As for our current prospect core, tbh it’s fucking incredible and I love it. The talent is off the charts, Marner just won the scoring title and is cranking out 10k word articles like I eat parms, Amundsen just led his team to a championship and has already won awards and shown he’s a goddamn stud (sorry for swearing). Good name is one of my favorite people I have never met in real life and his player is going to be incredible for us, not to mention he does incredible historic stat work for us when he’s not creating new strains of honey. Daddy Mack is the steal of the S55 draft, already making everyone look silly for letting him fall to us at pick 30 as he kills it in tpe every week, dude is awesome irl also. Suzuki is our back up of the future, another Latvian gem and should form a nice tandem with Amundsen down the road not to mention will keep Labsy in check if he goes on a bender. Then you add Zoidberg 3.0, Rose and Wong to this core and it gets even more exciting. Not to mention we are about to call up our top prospect Bradley Barkov who has elite talent and a very high ceiling, can't wait to see him out there this season! The Dragons are in a great spot, great people, great present and future core and needless to say I’m pretty happy about it.”

“After IIHF switch from Team Canada to Team Latvia I started to get better to know my Latvian roots. I read this folk tale what later was adapted to play/performance by famous Latvian playwright Anna Brigadere. It was called “Sprīdītis”. It was about young short boy who lived with his cruel step-mom. He was sick of her shit so he took old fathers shovel and … he started to travel to foreign lands to find his luck. He got into serious adventures. He did favours for Mother of wind, fought with people eating giant, was tortured by one cheap, stingy motherfucker, broke the devils horn, got half kindom and princess for wife. He had opportunity to fuck her but instead told her that she is bitch right in her face. After that he used his magic ring to teleport to “Happy land” (Anna Brigadere was first, Happy Gilmore 2nd). And hey hey what do You say – he got back to the home. All that time he was doing some unbelieveable shit but eventually he knew that his “Happy land” was at his home and he missed it. Why I’m telling this? Because this years draft was same as the morale of this story – You look for luck in foreign lands but eventually the true “Happy land” is at Your home. If You ask me about cruel step-mom  - in the movie the king married her but in folk tale if I’m right  I think bear ate her. So eventually story with happy ending.

Calgary had 3 picks from 13-37. I must say that draft itself was great this year. Many potentional 2000  - 1800 tpe players where aviable. Actually this could be great season for rebuilding teams. As for generation itself I believe this seasons draft could be like 2003 NHL entry draft. So even minute before draft I didn’t predict who could be the potentional #13 pick aviable. Holy smokes (I was at myself) Zoidberg is still aviable. He must be the true person to pick! It is so unbelieveable because Sachimo was very strong for his draft class and I wouldn’t say that he would go on double digit number. Must say loss for other teams is benefit for our. Unbelieveable aswell is this – Back in S20’s our both grandfathers played together. My grandpa was bit older, he teached the ways to score and later Sachimo did it way better and Labsvards slowly took more on defensive responsibilities. Sachimo Zoidberg is 5th all-time best Calgary defenseman in points. Just few points more than Steven Jalopski who was absolute legend back then. He was one of the Boychuks, Anrikkanens, Randlemans weaponbearers or dishservers. Call whatever You like but over 300 assists in somewhere 650 games is very respectable achievement (56 + 306 in 658 games played).  That’s his grandpa but look on us now – we are in same team and probably will play in same pairs for a while. We will raise the same cups! Is that not somekind of magic that teleports to “Happy Land”?

My grandpa was drafted 30 something (36 or 38 may be) and he was legendary player. Calgary has skill for it to raise a 1000 GP players from late or relatively late picks. Any other words – we are stealing drafts. Thomas Rose as 31st? Many teams missed opportunity – Calgary doesn’t. When I first met him in locker room I already liked him. Fun guy, already talking to other teammates. I haven’t got opportunity because of my timezones problem and reading Latvian folklore but sure I’ll get nice chat with him. Fucking “Red Eyes Calgary Dragon” – genious! He will be legendary Dragons forward!
I was surprised when noticed Wong on our team. Positively surprised. At first I thought we traded for pick but in the end just like “Sprīdītis”everyone finds way back on their “Happy Land”. Wong famility member is back at Calgary. I don’t excatly who he is. Benjamin’s or Calgary Dragons legendary guardian of the net Hunters relative. But for sure everyone will love him on team. People like Wong – never left but still You can feel they are in the place were they belong. Logan have to put his training to be an elite forward but surely he has potentional for it!

Prospect core is hot for Calgary. As being one of them I’m not gonna comment myself but I wanna say one thing – I want so bad to play with these players. Bradley is leaving prospect core group and heads straight to the big SHL team were he belongs. In my rookie year I think I saw we were playing so common hockey. We had samet aste for offensive production and assistance for forwards. Any other words – I can’t wait to share same powerplay with him and dangle around those poor players who have to stop us! I had opportunity to play with Mack and Darian on IIHF. Those both centers are very helpful in defensive zone that I say as a D-man who often see forwards forgetting some responsibilities in own zone but Mack and Darian ain’t them. Also my first point in WJC was because of Darians screen in front of net. When day come I’ll be proud to play with my fellow nation brothers share same jersey in internationals and SHL. We will win a lot together! And wins will be plenty because of dynamic duet that will overtake throne of Kata Vilde (Love his cooking shows). Cale has proven that can play adult level, that he brings championships and that he can have strong shoulder to rely on. Keisuke is born to support others and bring fun everywhere where he is. And when will come that day when Keisuke will guard our net – we all propects will be there for him! For victory! For glory! For Calgary!”

- Labsy

“This draft class was very deep, and I am very happy to return to my father’s original organization of the Calgary Dragons. Zoidberg and Rose are going to be studs and it’s going to be a lot of fun training with my fellow rookies in the offseason, as well as the rookie hazing we all know is coming. There are other guys in the organization I have already made connections with, just from being my father’s son. I know that I am very behind in terms of prospect development, but I feel like if I can hit my stride, we have the best prospect pool in the SHL. We’re going to be a dynasty that will never end. I’m planning to break my father and my brother’s cup runs. I want to get more than both of them and I know I’m with the right group of people to bring me to my full potential.”
