Selection: F - Nick Brain
Reasoning: He is a MVP candidate who can score with ease.
Round 5, Pick 66: Team Fishy
Selection: F - Kaarlo Kekkonen
Reasoning: Sniped Dankoa as my Co-GM here earlier, and double down here with his player. Dan is the top earning S51 player and is someone I'll be able to build my offence around for the present and moving forward. Dan is also someone I've gotten along with great, and so would be more than happy to share a locker room with him. With Kekkonen and Zheng as two-thirds of my top line, my first forward line is looking loaded.
Round 5, Pick 67: Team Sve7en
Selection: F - Jimmy Wagner
Reasoning: Season 53s are coming off the board slightly faster than I expected honestly, though it makes sense if people are looking to build for the future. If you can't bet on yourself, who will?
Round 5, Pick 68: Team Gabe
Selection: F - Jack Kanoff
Reasoning: Yet another S53 pick for us, and we get a third one who's very active and high TPE in Jeffie. He's another great Discord presence, and him, Lime and Nham already know each other pretty well. With these 3 we have a very strong base of players who are good now but will only get better for a while still.
Round 5, Pick 69: Team Muted
Selection: G - Markus Tegernako
Reasoning: I just love Markus Tegernako. He's a great goalie, and I'm confident he's going to stop pucks when we need him to and absolutely steal some wins for us. He's a great locker-room presence, and can surely help us out in keeping track of whoever needs to do more PTs as well.
Round 5, Pick 70: Team Reid
Selection: D - Nicholas Owens
Reasoning: I really wanted to pick myself here, but I saw that grum was available, as a S51 top earner, I knew I had to take the chance to solidify my top defensive pair. The Owens - Scianna combo can be effective from now until S70, so I viewed this as basically cementing my defence as a strength.
Round 5, Pick 71: Team JY
Selection: D - Magnus Liljestrom
Reasoning: Two of the top defensemen from S53? Count me in, places our peak a few seasons out while still being competitive now
Round 5, Pick 72: Team Jeff
Selection: D - Ryosuke Sato
Reasoning: Dextaria was one of my favorite teammates during my short stint in Toronto and we still have a good relationship. I love Dex and he'd be a great LR addition to any team who brings a ton of knowledge to any team. Not to mention he's an SMJHL GM now too.
Round 5, Pick 73: Team Fae
Selection: Coach - Nhamlet
Reasoning: Nham has proven that he has an excellent grasp of FHM, helping Chicago and Newfoundland put in elite performances as of late
Round 5, Pick 74: Team Luke
Selection: D - Axel Meszaros
Reasoning: Needing a future #1 defenseman, and with a lot of S53 defenseman getting taken before, ML is a great pick up here. Even though he isn't earning like crazy, he is a reliable earner as well as a great user. He can be the future #1 that I need, and a good top 4 defenseman right now
Round 5, Pick 75: Team Nham
Selection: D - Jack Klompus
Reasoning: Hard to say enough nice things about them. Came back to the league and have been just about the perfect person you'd want to have in a group of people. Kind, great to get along with and one of the best defensemen in the S54 class. Now I do regret this pick after the fact considering that Toast betrayed Newfoundland in becoming the Maine GM but I suppose that’s a plus for some I guess.
Round 5, Pick 76: Team Arkz
Selection: F - Theo Morgan
Reasoning: Theo doesn't have too many seasons left in the league, but is still one of the most accomplished skaters out there. He instantly makes this team better, and having someone with his experience and skills, even though it may not be for long, on the team is a tremendous win at the 76th pick.
Round 5, Pick 77: Team Puff
Selection: F - Julio Tokolosh
Reasoning: A perennial league top scorer, Tokolosh on the wing alongside Kandinsky will be a scary threat of the top line, especially considering who else I have lined up beside them. A great guy in the LR as well, this is a crime that he's still available this far.
Round 5, Pick 78: Team Hordle
Selection: F - Tony Pepperoni
Reasoning: Pepperoni is a great guy from EDM. I think he can lead my offense. Not only will he be a threat on the ice. But I believe Pepperoni is a great team leader and a good fit for the locker room.
Round 5, Pick 79: Team Boom
Selection: F - Jon Forty-One
Reasoning: Great guy that I know from EDM, another player who's constantly improving.
Round 5, Pick 80: Team SDCore
Selection: D - Disisde Dayudie
Reasoning:DD was an easy choice for me. I needed another good guy who could be a solid Defensive top pair. DD was there and I swiped him up. He has really good underlying numbers the past few seasons and I think a heightened role on a team would just make him breakout even more. Plus I love my Sweggy.
Biggest Surprise:
Reid: This round is hard to pick out a surprise, but to me it has to be Tony Pepperoni. Pepperoni is an all time great, there is no questioning that, but he is several seasons past his prime. Being one of the few S43 players left, Pepperoni is still a respectable TPE level, but is regressing hard, going into his 6th season of regression at the time of drafting. That is hard for any player, and usually signals the beginning of the end of a player’s prime. Not surprised that anyone would want to have Pepperoni on the team, just surprised that he went so soon is all.
Shuff: Jimmy Wagner at 67. Can’t say I’m surprised by sev7en betting on himself, but I feel like he isn’t at value this early. Everyone knows he’s going to Med School soon, is that not going to drive down his activity? For comparison, there is Ethan Duncan, same S53 class as Wagner with 20 more TPE, still on the board at the end of this round. His players until this pick are S50 and S51. Taking a S53 means he is looking to play the long game.
Mutedfaith: Theo Morgan and Julio Tokolosh, while both great players, are both not gonna be around for much longer. Or at least not at their prime TPE levels. Adding one of them to your team in the 5th round could mean the owners are banking on early success rather than a solid future.
Jeffie: I think Axel Meszaros is a bit of a reach here considering he has pretty much made it clear he wants to stop at 1200 TPE. Even though ML is a quality user and LR presence I’m not sure if he warranted a pick this high.
Biggest Steal:
Reid: Magnus Liljestrom. The S53 draft has only a handful of top end defenders, and Liljestrom is one of them. What blows my mind is that he lasted into this round, as Juke went earlier, along with Jeffie - who at the time was a defender. I debated between him and Owens, and probably should have taken Liljestrom. What is telling is that after Liljestrom went, the next few defenders off the board were either younger, or much less TPE.
Shuff: Nicholas Owens at 70 to Reid. Not much unlike what JY did; Reid was able to cement a great defense. Add that backbone to S50 center Ryan Shepard, Reid has a very good core to work with.
Mutedfaith: Kaarlo Kekkonen at 66 to Fishy. Much like Mitchel van der Heijden in round 4, one of the top earning players in S51 still being available for drafting in this spot is really good value for your pick. Dankao is a great user, who knows how to build a good player (it’s no coincidence Kaarlo Kekkonen was on top of the league in his junior seasons). Kaarlo will be in his prime real soon, and should be leading his teams offense for a few seasons.
Luke: I really like the Jack Klompus pick for Nhamlet, its a really good pick for a future #1 D. A S54 Defenseman that can be a backbone for a future team, and be a fine top 4 Defenseman in most defense.
Jeff: Similar to what Muted had to say, I thought Kaarlo Kekkonen was a steal at this pick. He’s a top earning player with a solid user to back him up. He brings a lot of value to the table and Kekkonen is also a player ready to dominate with his peak around the corner.
Fishy: I'm gonna give myself a pat on the back here with the Kekkonen selection. As Dan made it abundantly clear yesterday, other forwards from his draft class were taken before him although Dan is outpacing them in TPE.
ROUND 4
Round 6, Pick 81: Team SDCore
Selection: F - Phineas Gold
Reasoning: Phineas Gold to me has the chance to be a breakout offensive player. I knew there were some depth Centers I could get later, so I thought a talented scoring winger was a no brainer here. My plan was to stack S48-52 players and go for a more immediate team, rather than a builder or a regressor. We will see how it plays out. Plus shout out to Zorem, awesome user!
Round 6, Pick 82: Team Boom
Selection: D - Zlatan Ibrahimovic Jr.
Reasoning: One of the higher remaining defensemen in the draft by TPE, Soulja is another piece to keep filling out my defense corps.
Round 6, Pick 83: Team Hordle
Selection: City - Carolina
Reasoning: SWEEET CAROLINAAAAAA BUM BUM BUUUM. I'm from the Carolinas. Gotta snag it.
Round 6, Pick 84: Team Puff
Selection: F - Esa Parmborg
Reasoning: People joke about Calgary being an older team, but being only in S47 Esa Parmborg has barely peaked, and having two centers at roughly 2000 TPE is no joke. If needed you can bump Parmborg on the first line for an offensive explosion, or have him and Kandinsky swap being the top line center as needed.
Round 6, Pick 85: Team Arkz
Selection: F - Hugh Jazz
Reasoning: In the interest of full transparency, this pick was made prior to Hugh's position swap. But since it would totally derail the rest of my draft to move him to defense, we're going to keep him at forward in this made-up universe. Hugh is a little older than the rest of the team, but we're going to favor some experience in a few spots to help carry us through till we get some youth in the organization.
Round 6, Pick 86: Team Nham
Selection: D - Ambacas Cuddles
Reasoning: While Cuddles hasn’t quite the same earning speed that he started out with in his career, anything you’ve read about why trella should be taken is just about the same reason to be including both what will eventually still be a stud player and an incredible energy to include in the locker room.
Round 6, Pick 87: Team Luke
Selection: F - Keith Lee
Reasoning: Taking 2 forwards from the S52 class is great for me, forming the core around S50-S54 to be in competition now and in the future, Lee will be a first liner for at least 7 seasons.
Round 6, Pick 88: Team Fae
Selection: F - Joseph Weston
Reasoning: ACAP is a great LR guy who also has a good player. This one was a no brainer.
Round 6, Pick 89: Team Jeff
Selection: F - Karl Krashwagen
Reasoning: Krash is another solid LR presence who has a lot of knowledge about the ins and outs of the league and already has connections with people on the team like Dex. His player will compliment Hernadivic well and should give my team a solid 1-2 punch on offense for the foreseeable future.
Round 6, Pick 90: Team JY
Selection: F - Reid Sutherland
Reasoning: Continuing my S53 train, I've filled out the back end and now need to get help down the middle, Reid is a fantastic person and player and I'm confident will be our leader for a long time
Round 6, Pick 91: Team Reid
Selection: F - Ethan Duncan
Reasoning: Fucking JY taking me right before I had the chance to. I was convinced that I would take myself there, but he scooped me before I had the chance. In that case, I went for the next best thing, another S53 high TPE center from my class! Sheep is a great user, and has a great player. Therefore he also makes a great pick. With Shepard and Duncan down the middle, I now have two excellent centers that will be 1800+ TPE together for a big window of time.
Round 6, Pick 92: Team Muted
Selection: D - Mathias Seger
Reasoning: Mathias Seger in defense was a no-brainer for me. Another solid locker-room presence to add to the already great locker-room, and a good, allround defenseman as well. Is in regression, but the way he is earning he can soldier on for a few more seasons. He’ll provide experience, and 1st pair ratings for the near future and will be holding the fort on the second and eventually third pair when he is overtaken by the younger generations.
Round 6, Pick 93: Team Gabe
Selection: D - Emilia Bergman
Reasoning: Reno is another big LR add for the team. A year off from being S53, but still a great earner and LR presence who already knows Lime and Jeff and as such adds to the main core of the locker room.
Round 6, Pick 94: Team Sve7en
Selection: D - Ursin Zimmermann
Reasoning: With my near future solidified, I needed a team that could support that. Specifically a top pair that can eat a lot of minutes. While he wasn't at the top of my board initially, the other drafters had me revisit my priorities and Zimmermann is in that S50 sweet spot and while they haven't max earned all career they're still a top pair guy for maybe 6 seasons and top 4 beyond that, exactly what I need when a lot of good defensemen are on the younger side of S53.
Round 6, Pick 95: Team Fishy
Selection: D - Mikkel Asmus Sondergard
Reasoning: MAS gives me a top-earning young defencemen that will be able to provide solid top-4 minutes and eventually become my top offensive defenceman and quarterback an elite powerplay. The Texas connection with Dan allows me to bank on MAS to be a valuable member moving forward.
Round 6, Pick 96: Team Sparky
Selection: D - Alex Petrenko
Reasoning: Alex is the type of player who is going to punch you in the mouth and laugh.... and come back and hit you in the same spot....OVER AND OVER AGAIN! The ability to read the puck on both sides of the puck is just a thing of beauty. Alex will be paired up with ---- ---- who I drafted a few rounds from now, but Alex will be the leader of this second line.
Biggest Surprise:
Reid: Not necessarily a bad pick, but certainly surprising to me was the pick of Joseph Weston. At the time of picking, several other S50 players with more TPE were available. There were also top earners from slightly later drafts available that might have been better TPE investments as well. Now, ACC is an awesome LR person, so that in and of itself makes up the difference in TPE, if Fae was concerned about building LR culture. Just more surprised to see him go one pick before his S50 classmate with 200 more TPE, and a few picks before some of the top S53 forwards went.
Shuff: Carolina at 83 to Hordie. Hordie made the decision to go players first and did it pretty well. Coming in with Tony Pepperoni, three great defenders and the top goalie, I expected Hordie to work on his forward group. Picking, say, Esa Parmborg, who went next, would give him a 2K to center his top line would’ve been a great pick. Having a good good city can be nice if you are looking to attract free agents. But Hordie is going the win now route.
Mutedfaith: People wanting to pick themselves, or picking themselves. Se7ven did it last round, Reid wanted to do it this round. While I am very confident about my player not being absolute trash, I would never pick myself in one of these things. Need to spread my chances a bit. By playing on another team than my own I have double the chance to get the win. Even more if someone adds me to their back office as well.
Jeff: I think Ambacas Cuddles going off the board here was pretty interesting. Nothing against Trella of course, love him as a user but it’s no secret that Cuddles has fallen off as an earner recently after having a commanding lead a few seasons ago.
Fishy: I think its taking Carolina as a location. Carolina doesn't scream hockey hotbed to me, and I think Hordle could've waited to draft their location.
Biggest Steal:
Reid: JY choosing me is a pretty big steal in my opinion… But also me taking Duncan. In the end, Karl Krashwagen stands out as a great pick - high TPE, and a lot of his peers in the S50 class had gone much earlier. One of the best long term wingers still on the board in the 6th round.
Shuff: Ursin Zimmermann to sve7en at 94. Zimmermann is a great dude and is in the S50 hot spot. A bit down the rankings in S50, but nabbing a S50 player here is round six is a great pick.
Mutedfaith: Esa Parmborg going 84th to Puff is a steal. Tokolosh, Morgan, van Otter, Wilson and even Selman from his class already went in earlier rounds so him still being available in the 6th round is great value for a team that wants to compete right away.
Jeff: I think both of my S53 buddies in Ethan Duncan and Reid Sutherland going off the board here were pretty big steals. Both of them are fantastic earners and have some big positions on the site. They can certainly be counted on to be major voices/contributors in the LR while being very good earners.
Fishy: Ursin Zimmermann to sve7en at 94 is my pick as a steal, same as Shuff. Ursin was actually someone I was going to take with the very next pick, but 7 sniped him. Krash getting selected after less active/earning players in his same class was also a very good pick.
Fishy: I think its taking Carolina as a location. Carolina doesn't scream hockey hotbed to me, and I think Hordle could've waited to draft their location.
