[2x Draft] Colorado drafting from JURT's POV - Part 1/5 : S56 SMJHL Draft
#1
(This post was last modified: 08-25-2021, 11:41 PM by JURT.)

Intro
With the draft just over now, I wanted to take a look at the last five drafts I spent in the Colorado War Room (not including the one that just happened where I replaced Jumbo in GM Chat since he was away). I'll give some hindsight on who we picked, who I suggested we picked (obviously drafting can be made to look easy in hindsight, but I remember vividly suggesting everyone of these picks). I want to stress how much I love the GMs that have been leading the team since I joined the War Room and that I'm not trying to undermine the job they do or make them look bad (except maybe in one pick in part 3 - S58, but that's only to tease them).

This was a long time ago, but I distinctly remember being disappointed when we picked Ruggs McOooh, so that first one makes me look dumb as all hell. In my defense, I didn't do a lot of scouting in my first season in the War Room, I was mostly geared towards observing and learning from the veterans who pulled most of the weight. I was mostly looking at the TPE tracker and exploring prospect's post history to see who had done the most tasks and try to make sure nothing was slipping past the General Managers. It was the first pick I ever assisted to from the War Room so I never actually voiced that I thought Anna Pontecorvo would be an interesting pick, and I think everyone on the Raptors is very glad I shut my mouth and let the experienced people talk at that point. Ruggsy has been nothing but great and I love him with all my heart, while Pontecorvo went IA before ever reaching the first SMJHL cap of 350 TPE. The War Room definitely made the right pick there in choosing a player who would become captain and the co-GM of the team, as well as a stud player throughout his J career and now an important piece of SFP's future.

I recall having no objections to picking RESO, and it's a good thing: he's a really stand up dude and a good presence in the locker room. We had already talked a bit in the locker room at that point because he was already a coach for us and he was active there even when he was still playing EVO. I don't remember if he was in voice chat with us at that exact moment, but looking at the draft order again I have no doubt that we made the best choice possible. Another stud defenseman for the Raptors who had great J seasons and just finished his first season in the SHL with the Argonauts where we are really happy to have him.

Round 2 - Pick 20

Raptors pick: Yanno Rosejac

lespoils' choice: Yanno Rosejac

The second half of back-to-back picks where I couldn't really have a different opinion from the rest of the War Room. Right after we picked RESO, we knew we needed a goalie to take over Marcel Laflamme's corpse, he who had gone IA after being drafter in the second round the season before (that's another pick where I would've picked different than the War Room as I would've chosen RART who's had a longer, better J career and is still kicking around as backup in the SHL but that's a discussion for another time). So we picked Yanno Rosejac who was nothing but stellar for us in his first four seasons. Then, right around the time he would've been called up to Seattle to be our star goalie for years to come, he unexpectedly and unexplicably disappeared. He's still 15th in TPE in an overall very good class. We finally traded him at the deadline this season as we were set up with Senji Seteki as our new starter for this season as we expected Rosejac to leave to Seattle. He wound up eliminating us with Anchorage so maybe we shouldn't have done that but in the long run the pick we got for him is better than keeping an IA backup.

Round 3 - Pick 32

Raptors pick: Bobby Motz
Status: Inactive
TPE: 200

Season Player Pos Team GP G A PTS "+/-" PIM S S% ATOI GA TA W L BLK HIT
56 Bobby Motz RW COL 50 8 5 13 2 14 41 19.50% 10:33 11 9 0 0 22 15

59 Bobby Motz LW COL 0
60 Bobby Motz LW N/A 0

lespoils' choice: N/A

I honestly don't have a single clue what happened at that point, I think I might have zoned out or stepped away from the computer for a while. The team took Bobby Motz and although he didn't pan out, he ended up being the perfect inactive with exactly 200 TPE which made him a lower-tier IFA with a decent build. We kept giving him mimimun contracts and we had a great peace of mind every season knowing that if too many draftees went IA before reaching a high TPE level we'd have Motz who could efficiently patch any hole in the roster, at forward or defense.

Round 4 - Pick 38

Raptors pick: Wally Herman
Status: Inactive
TPE: 158

Season Player Pos Team GP G A PTS "+/-" PIM S S% ATOI GA TA W L BLK HIT

Another one where I don't remember saying anything in the War Room. I do remember trying to help him out figure out how to update and stuff like that, but sadly it never paid out as he went IA even earlier than Motz and will not be remembered despite a high career PPG of 0.8.

Round 4 - Pick 44

Raptors pick: Robert Feltersnatch

lespoils' choice: Robert Feltersnatch

Here's one that I remember and that will finally make me look better than the Pontecorvo pick I would've made. As the team was getting ready to start passing, I noticed a player who seemed to have flown under the radar of every other team, a user that seemed active enough but didn't make much noise, a quiet earner. I mentioned him in voice chat and the team agreed to take a flyer on him. As Feltersnatch's stats show, it was the steal of the SMJHL S56 draft. He sadly went inactive in his last season before being called up and played a last season as IA on STL, a disappointing end for a player who was nominated for a lot of individual honors by the SMJHL All-Star and Awards Committees during his J career. It also ended badly for Colorado: Feltersnatch asked for a trade to Kelowna in the middle of the season, to be with some friends. We obtained a great return for him; giving up the player we just drafted in the fourth round for a second rounder and another fourth round pick in the following draft. Unfortunately, as we will see in a few picks, we couldn't capitalize on either on these picks to turn them into impactful players.

I am pretty sure Feltersnatch was my first ever pick as @LordBirdman had to leave. It definitely was a great call @"lespoils"
