[2x Draft Media] Kelowna Knights Continue Rebuild
#1
(This post was last modified: 08-24-2021, 03:05 PM by DarkCanuck29.)

The SMJHL draft took place last Sunday and once again the Kelowna Knights took advantage of a deep draft and used ten draft picks to bolster the core of the team.  Adding to the group acquired at last season’s draft the Knights are well positioned to make some noise this season and beyond. With the tireless work of the scouting staff, management and even some of the players, the Knights locked in on their targets and pulled in an impressive group of players with unlimited potential. A clear set of criteria emerged as the night went on, with Kelowna targeting high TPE earning recreates with solid bank accounts. In general, there is a low risk of these players busting from inactivity. Expect the Kelowna Knights to be scouted heavily by SHL teams this year, as several of these players have potential to go in the first round in next year’s SHL draft.

3rd Overall – Ben Jammin – Defence – Canada – 226 TPE
A pick likely locked into place long before the draft, Ben Jammin fills an obvious need for Kelowna on the back end. Already sitting at 226 TPE, this bruising Canadian will immediately slot into the Knights’ Top 4 on opening night and will likely be seeing a significant amount of time on special teams. This is a low risk pick, being a recreate from user James Truong with a $67 Million bank account. Expect to see Ben Jammin’s name called early in the first round in the SHL draft next year, especially as more people are exposed to his excellent locker room persona.

16th Overall – Malach Sköda – Right Wing – Czech Republic – 195 TPE
The hard hitting, hard charging Right Winger Malach Skoda was an obvious choice at 16th overall. Although he is not the highest earner in his class, Malach Skoda clearly puts in the work on and off the ice. Even sitting below 200 TPE, Skoda will slot into the Knight’s top 9 and will look to put up points from the first game of the season. This is not user IMShiny’s first player and with $7M already in the bank, they will be able to afford that training all season long.

29th Overall via NBB – Ignaz Pleyel – Left Wing – Canada – 224 TPE
Ignaz Pleyel is a beauty of a Left Winger and a huge earner of TPE. Just like Duncan Mackenzie at 29th overall last year, Ignaz Pleyel immediately looks like a steal. With the earning rate currently underway, it is very possible Pleyel finds his way into the Knight’s top 6 and sees some special teams time in a year where learning is key. User VillageBC is a new user to the site, but his amazing conversations with the scouting staff made him a must draft player. He is already sitting with $2.4 Mil in the bank and can be expected to put in the work to increase that throughout the year. This is a very big pick for Kelowna, as Pleyel has potential to be a 1st Round Pick in next seasons SHL draft. This is a locker room guy through and through.

31st Overall via REG, via MET – Aldo Huber – Center – Switzerland – 155 TPE
This large Centre should be a vital part of this year’s team, with potential to seize the third line Centre role almost immediately. Although Aldo Huber is a recreate, there has been no update to the original post in the Update thread, so this pick does represent some risk. That being said, User Hoovuh is still active on the site and carries more than $2M in the bank. Expect to see a big jump in TPE occurring in the next few weeks and a big increase in ice time throughout the season.

34th Overall via ANA – Christian Kinsinger – Defence – Denmark – 238 TPE
The. Pick. Of. The. Draft. How Dane Christian Kinsinger was available at 34th overall is a mystery, but Kelowna jumped on the chance to pick one of the highest TPE earners in the entire draft in the third round. This pick is so unbelievably important to Kelowna’s future Four-Star Cup chances, as he will join Leons Briedis, Sebastien Weiss and Ben Jammin as an absolutely epic top 4. Kingsinger projects as an Offensive Defenceman and Powerplay Quarterback, which makes him the perfect counterpoint to a more defensive oriented player like Briedis. This is not user Symmetrik’s first player and with almost $5.6M in the bank, Symmetrik is well on their way to being set for the year.

44th Overall – Lord Skrolk – Goalie – Japan – 173 TPE
The Lord themselves has arrived in Kelowna. Desperately needing an active goaltender after the departure of Benjamin Blue-II, Lord Skrolk is a lock to have the starting job straight out of camp. Sitting with a healthy 173 TPE, Lord Skrolk is already the within reach of being the top goalie at Kelowna, with Jason Playstation going inactive early last season. The development of Skrolk will be vital to the championship hopes of Kelowna going forward. User Nykonax has been here before, and currently sits with $29.5 Million in the bank waiting to be spent of the training that will push Skrolk into the history books.

46th Overall via STL – Alicia Melchiott – Centre – Gallia – 198 TPE
Alicia Melchiott will take over the third or fourth line this year and move up the depth chart quickly. With PT claims coming in at the time of writing, Melchiott is over 200 TPE and the Gallian projects as a two-way do it all Centre. Not as large or bruising as most of Kelowna’s other prospects, Mechiott should be able to carve out an important role on this club and move up the draft list for the SHL. Another Recreate, User Emiko has an impressive bank balance and is already settling in nicely in the Kelowna locker room. This is a very good selection at 46th overall and the type of pick that pushes clubs over the top.

54th Overall via ANC – Wayne Glensky – Right Wing – Switzerland – 198 TPE
The one, the only, Wayne Glensky “fell” to 54th overall, but Kelowna was very excited to pick him up there. At 198 TPE, the small, shifty winger projects as a scoring threat and an offensive dynamo and his activity levels are exciting out of a pick at this point in the draft. This pick has all the hallmarks of a steal. This is just the second new user picked by Kelowna in the draft, but it seems to be a good one, as Darkheart is earning well and updating regularly. Sitting with just $400K in the bank, Darkheart will likely be getting into the swing of earning cash soon. This is a heck of a pickup this late in the draft and I am excited to see what Glensky can do over the course of the season.

72nd Overall – DJ Monaco – Right Wing – United States – 155 TPE
The great DJ themselves, it seems that the Knights are taking a chance that they will decide a career in hockey is a better idea than a career in music. This is a swing for the fences type pick, as user DJMonaco has not yet made an update page. In the event that DJ does decide to make a go of it, this will be a huge get for the club.

86th Overall – Mikko Feller – Left Wing – Finland – 155 TPE
Another pick based on hope, the Left Winger Mikko Feller looks like they will not report to training camp. User, FellyFell88 is inactive and also has not made an update page, so it looks like this pick is likely for not. Even still, it is never a bad idea to snag anyone possible in the late rounds and hope for a miracle as opposed to just passing on a potential player.

With these new picks in place, significant change has taken place in the overall makeup of the Kelowna Knights squad. Let’s dive into how the depth chart looks today.

Centre

Satoru Gojō – 450 TPE (450 Cap)
Sean Stevenson III - 379 TPE (350 Cap)
Alicia Melchiott – 198 TPE
Aldo Huber – 155 TPE

With the addition of Melchiott and Huber, Kelowna made the obvious choice of dropping Inactives Tim Rocker and Tommy Westbrook. Kelowna’s chances this year will depend largely on the play of Melchiott and Huber as they look to step up to support Gojō and Stevenson III.

Right Wing

Duncan Mackenzie – 398 TPE (350 Cap)
Petr Svoboda – 392 TPE (350 Cap)
Scott Thorn – 307 TPE (350 Cap)
Wayne Glensky – 198 TPE
Malach Sköda – 195 TPE
DJ Monaco – 155 TPE

Kelowna is strong on the right side, with Mackenzie, Svoboda and Thorn all looking to be capped out this season. Glendky and Sköda will have the chance to come along at their own pace, seeing more sheltered minutes as they figure out the league and their role on the team. All these players may see time on the left wing as the season progresses to fill in the gap on that side.

Left Wing

Petre Sabor – 238 TPE
Ignaz Pleyel – 224 TPE
Mikko Feller – 155 TPE

The Knights are short on natural left wingers and rookie Ignaz Pleyel will be given opportunities to play up the lineup. With Sabor’s development looking to be stalled out, Pleyel could become the Knights’ top left winger within the first week of the season. This looks to be a place Kelowna will strengthen through the season, with possible trades occurring.

Defence

Leons Briedis – 419 TPE (350 Cap)
Sebastien Weiss – 320 TPE (350 Cap)
Patrick Toes – 291 TPE
Thomas Kalnoky – 245 TPE
Christian Kinsinger – 238 TPE
Ben Jammin – 226 TPE
Adriano Donini – 224 TPE

The defensive squad is the deepest part of the team and the spot with the most potential. Leons Briedis is already a superstar and Sebastien Weiss has cemented himself as the clear #2 on the team. Although Patrick Toes and Thomas Kalnoky are next in line in total TPE, it is expected that Christian Kinsinger and Ben Jammin will quickly overtake them in the TPE race. Adriano Donini looks to be the odd person out, with no effort being put in off the ice. The top 4 will be “the guys” for the next several years.

Goaltender

Corey McFarland – 194 TPE
Jason Playstation – 175 TPE
Lord Skrolk – 173 TPE

With Cory McFarland and Jason Playstation both as inactives, the door is open for Lord Skrolk to win the starting job immediately. If Skrolk can stay active, then there will be no worries about the goaltending situation in Kelowna.

Ultimately, it is clear that with teams like the Whalers going all in for this season, a championship run is extremely unlikely. This is a team built to dominate in Season 62 and 63. If these new players stay active and reach their potential, there should be a lot more hardware coming to the Knights extremely quickly.
