Shadow Fenix: An Underrated Pick for Best Rookie [2x Team Spotlight]

SEATTLE, Wash. – The choice for this season's Ryan Jesster (Best Rookie) for one of the deepest rookie classes in the past 10 seasons looks to be an obvious choice on the surface. Frøya Solberg, the first overall pick in the S74 SHL draft and recent Four Star Cup winner with Quebec City, is an almost sure bet among SHL insiders. Other skilled players like Langston Hardison-Laurent or Céleste Desjardins have legitimate shots at wining the award as well.
However, if you dig just a little bit deeper in the S74 draft class, you'll find an underrated center by the name of Shadow Fenix. Shadow is coming off an absolute stellar junior career that included a Four Star Cup, two appearances in the 1st All Star Team, a bronze medal with USA White, a Raymond Lindsay nomination, and an appearance on the SMJHL Rookie All Star Team. Shadow was featured as the Colorado Raptors' first line center for all four seasons in the SMJHL. In those four seasons, he amassed 149 goals and 200 assists for a total of 349 points. He lead the Colorado Raptors in scoring for all of his junior seasons except his rookie season. This season, Shadow Fenix takes his electrifying style of hockey to the Seattle Argonauts. The Argonauts are a team that's just now coming out of a rebuild and are now hungry for some success. Fenix has that offensive firepower that could propel the Argonauts to the top. In preseason, Shadow Fenix was slotted into the first line center role once again alongside fellow rookies Squidwardo Tentacles and Will Tomlander. Over seven preseason games, Shadow Fenix leads the team with 8 points (3 goals, 5 assists). But Fenix is not one to list his own successes. His humility shines through as he credits his teammates for his ability to succeed, according to a previous interview. To Fenix, its the locker room and on-ice chemistry that lends itself to succeeding in such a competitive sport. In Seattle, he's already putting in the work to build that chemistry with his new teammates. This preseason, he is still surrounded by high quality linemates just like he had in Colorado. The only difference is that they are all rookies this time around. Squidwardo Tentaclés was selected 7th overall in the S74 draft. Will Tomlander was selected 3rd overall in the S74 draft. These two have a great chance of winning Best Rookie as well. Fenix will be the glue or the engine that makes the whole line work. He elevates the level of play when he's on the ice and makes his teammates that much better. That is why I project him to be awarded Best Rookie. And that line as a whole would go on to be a deadly threat in future SHL seasons, if kept together. Shadow Fenix certainly has a high ceiling and the potential to become a superstar in the Simulation Hockey League. The Seattle front office believes in him and his abilities to be that guy for the Argonauts. Fenix and his young teammates have all the tools to take Seattle to great heights. It will just take time and there will be growing pains along the way. But will he be awarded Best Rookie in S77? Well, only time will tell in this stacked rookie class. Seattle fans will need to buckle up, grab some popcorn, and enjoy the ride. Words: 569
