If we are to talk about rivalry in the SMJHL, there is no better than the rivalry between Halifax Raiders and Prince George Firebirds. These two teams are a result of the expansion draft and thus both have emerged at the same point in time. It is obvious that clear rivalry would exist between these two teams to see which of the two is superior. In fact, the first ever Halifax win was against Prince George themselves in a fiery battle where the Raiders took the crown in a hard fought 4-3 win in S25. The Firebirds must also be furious as the Raiders were able to win the 4 star Cup in only their second season, which is phenomenal for a new team and have won already twice the cup. The rivalry continues to exist between these two teams as even now they are both competing to see which of the two is better although both teams are at the bottom of the league. This season Raiders went a full rebuild mode as most of the team is primarily rookies. The way we prepare for a big match is to have the rookies drink a nice shot of vodka before their big rivalry match. Except one rookie in particular, Yuri Boyka Jr., takes it to a new level as he decides to drink the whole bottle instead as he believes in drunken hockey. The raiders are somewhat aware that this season is just a building step for them as they want to go full out next season as many of the rookies should come back. That is when it is very possible that team will be ready to compete for the cup again. Will the firebirds torch the Raiders or will they get their nest raided. Stay tuned to find out, until next time, Adios.

Rivalries are hard to come by in the SMJHL for some teams but if there ever was a rival for the St. Louis Scarecrows after last season it would be the Detroit Falcons. While the Scarecrows prepare for any game with confidence and determination theres nothing like the preparation that goes into the first cup finals rematch of the season. While most games are handled with respect the same can't be said for the Scarecrows and Falcons. St. Louis was ready to prove that the finals last season was just a fluke jumping out to a 3 goal lead by the end of the first led by 2 assists from Tigole Bitties. This would not be enough for St. Louis though. After a pair of goals by Detroit closed the gap St. Louis put it away for good in the third period ensuring a 4-2 victory and payback of sorts for last years finals. The match also saw 12 penalties between the 2 teams led again by Tigole Bitties who was out to prove that his new team is better this year. Bitties would receive a 5 min major for fighting and a game misconduct for instigating. In our next match against Detroit the next night he would receive another 5 min major for fighting after beating down one of the Falcons in route to another victory. While Detroit might have come out on top last season, this season will definitely be the year of the Scarecrow as we strike fear into anyone who gets in our way.

The Toilet Bowl

Halifax Dumpster Fire raiders 1 - Prince George Firebirds Firebirds 2

The "Toilet Bowl" as it was dubbed by many in the media came upon Prince George a week ago. It was a misnomer, really, considering how bad Halifax is, and Prince George was on the way out of the basement of the league. Regardless, the game opened up with a quick period of nothingness. Literally nothing happened.

In the second, Hagan skated right through the <s>Dumpster Fire's</s> Raiders' excuse for defense, breaking Dwayne Wyder's ankles in the process, and went bar down on their swiss cheese in net. A couple minutes later he took a penalty for interference, after Wyder dove and got away with it. The rest of the period went by without much happening, other than the Raiders getting beat up by the Firebirds.

The third opened up with Wyder high-sticking Hagan and then running away from a fight to answer for it. Later on, Dani Forsberg would net a power-play goal for the Firebirds, giving them a 2-0 lead that Halifax wouldn't be able to beat, since they can't score goals to save their lives. Bar Downski did get a lucky one past Zhumbayev, but the Raiders got flushed by Prince George, losing 2-1.

It's no secret that the Detroit Falcons don't exactly love the Montreal Militia. They're not really looking to make friends, bury hatchets, or even develop a "healthy" rivalry.

"It's unhealthy," says Falcons defenseman Karl Hefeweizen. In his rookie season, it didn't take very long for Karl to pick up his teammates' habits in the locker room. "We don't like them. Never will." Through his VHL experience, Karl's dealt with many a locker room rivalry. "I'm more of a guy that dislikes an individual. Someone who plays dirty, someone who keeps yammering on. This is the first time I've hated a whole team."

<center>[Image: obyrne.jpg]
The latest Falcons prank printout adorns the away locker room door for the Militia to see.
</center>

Karl's had an underwhelming start to his rookie season. Posting a -6 across 17 games, he's dropped a few more to the Militia than he would have liked. "I have to get back into it. Before home games we do things like leave old fish in the visitor locker room for them, or hide all their towels. We should probably be focusing on the whiteboard a bit more instead."

Focus has indeed been lacking in the locker room. Karl's 21 blocked shots lead the team, but he claims they need to zero it in. "The antics have got to stop. I'm fine with us printing hilarious photoshops out on the weekend, but game day should be about the game."

The Scarecrows’ biggest rival is themselves. We have the talent, we have the leadership. The Crows just don’t have the consistency. Tigole Bitties is noticing on a daily basis that some days the Crows are motivated pregame, during the game, and postgame, and some nights they’re just going through the motions. He’s determined to change that.

Tigole trains hard on a game against a SMJHL rival. He wakes up, makes a spinach and egg-white scramble, and jumps on the bike for an hour to get the cardio going. He then takes an hour nap and wakes up to head to the rink. He meets up with the remainder of the team at the rink. At the arena, he jumps back on the bike for another 45 minutes to keep the blood pumping. He joins the rest of the squad to play some soccer in the hallway, deftly bouncing the ball from his foot, shoulder, head and back over to the well-sculpted physique of Crossfit Jesus.

His team might not be ready every night, but Tigole Bitties will be. It’s a safe bet that his third line will dominate possession and he’ll be winning the majority of the draws at the faceoff dot. It’s all he can do to battle the Crows biggest rival – consistency.

For years now, the St. Louis Scarecrows' biggest rival has been the Detroit Falcons. The two teams have met in several Four-Star Cup finals, with playoff series between the bitter enemies becoming more heated with each passing season. After bowing out to the Falcons in the most recent SMJHL playoffs, the Scarecrows came into S35 with revenge in mind.

The first meeting between the Crows and Falcons came in game 57, and tensions were high. The Scarecrows' pride was at stake, and they were willing to put it all on the line to defeat the falcons. An extra morning skate was held on game day, and it was made clear that anyone who messed up that night would be doing bag skates for the rest of their lives. Management partnered with local fast food restaurants to give out free fried chicken, labeled as "Fried Falcon", to fans at the door, ensuring an enormous turnout. The pregame show even included a mascot fight, where some poor sod in a falcon suit was pummeled by a mob of angry scarecrows.

From the minute the Falcons hit the ice in warmup, boos rained down upon them from the hometown crowd. Some fans even went as fas as throwing fried chicken onto the ice. It should be noted that while those fans were escorted from the arena by police, no one in the city of St. Louis was overly upset about their actions, and they will not face further punishment.

When the puck dropped, the Scarecrows made their statement quickly. Three goals in the first period immediately put Detroit on the defensive, and they seemed unable to recover from the rough start. The Falcons managed a goal in the second, and another early in the third, and for a few minutes it seemed a comeback was within reach. But the Scarecrows would not be embarrassed by their rivals again. But the Scarecrows held them off, with Brett Kennedy stamping out any hopes of a comeback via a late empty netter. As expected, the game was violent, with 13 penalties called between the two teams.

But as anyone could have guessed, the highlight of the night was the fight. In the third period, hoping to stifle the Falcons' comeback and prove himself to his new team, rookie Tigole Bitties dropped the gloves with Roddy Hawkins. Though the fight was scored a draw, the bloody ruin that remained of Hawkins' nose and the derailed Falcons' comeback show that Bitties and the Scarecrows were the real winners.
