(1825 words, ready for grading)

S50 looms, and there are some changes from the S39 and S40 classes that draw attention. Most notably, the S40 team was left without a goalie, so I lumped them in with the S39 crowd to form an amazing superteam. Let's take a look at what it means for this squad.

Note: I had not yet announced the S40 squad so there won't be an additions section for this one.

Goodbyes

Romualds Loks syndicate had an abysmal s49 and has decided to call it quits for a career. A decent 9 season SHL career is nothing to scoff at, and we wish them the best in retirement. @rieksts

Geoff Higgins Panthers was a good forward for LA but has decided to hang them up. Maybe he moves out to rural California to watch the sun set over the ocean. @DanbyRem

Paddy O'Sullivan Chiefs was a roster filler for the Chiefs and has decided to hang them up. He could always find a league job like Juniors GMing in order to stay in touch with the game. @TML99

Kolja Seppanen Barracuda has been dropped due to the increased depth of the merged team. They didn't play a minute of SHL hockey in s49 so we aren't missing much. @ntuttle

Baron O'Beefdip Steelhawks is another depth casualty. He got 1 pt in 50 games last season. @Someguy9500

Carter Manning Stars is actually a decent player but lost his spot to younger forwards on the team. @CDub2

Mirio Togato Platoon played 5 seconds a night on average for the Platoon. He will play 0 seconds a night on average for the cyclones. @TwinTailedOtaku

Bob Bergen Specters is an amazing defender who lost out because S40 is absolutely disgusting defensively. Let's hope this is for the best. @Nobody

Richard Physt Specters recently retired to greener Louisiana pastures. With a hell of a career, he will be missed by his team dearly. @CptSquall

And now for the Roster:

DeMaricus Smyth Specters had another stellar year, leading the Specters once again to a comfortable playoff berth. He is reaping the benefits of being in the prime of his career and shows no signs of slowing down. @Blastmeaway

Shooter McGavin Dragons had an incredible year for the Dragons and led them in scoring. He looks to become a household name among SHL fans everywhere, not just in Calgary. @c00kies

Anders Christiansen Wolfpack had an amazing year with the Wolfpack and led them all the way to a finals run as one of the superstars in New England. He is a terrific forward who will continue to produce for the Wolfpack. @NorwegianDemon

Manuel Gotze Wolfpack was also up there in Wolfpack scoring, pushing them to the finals and having more room on the ice as defenders are trying to cover other scoring threats. He was able to find great chemistry this past season and really gel with his team to go on an amazing run. @Mavfatha

Reginald Rove Rage had a great year as well, surrounded by young guys on the Rage and still able to put up 40+ points. If the Rage ever do go on a great playoff run, I'd expect Rove to be a big part of that. @Yurt6

Mikkel Haugen syndicate has taken more of a defensive role, but is very good at it. He had a great plus/minus on a team that struggled defensively, and was able to keep the puck out of the net while chipping in offensively. That will be a huge addition to the already offensively gifted squad. @Count Chocula

Iam Essellemm Renegades led the Renegades in scoring this past season and had a great offensive season. With better linemates on this Cyclones squad, we will look to Essellem to post some great numbers and really prop up their teammates. @iamslm22

Yannick Berger Rage has become a depth player for the Rage but still did an alright job playing very limited minutes. He will get some more ice in this tournament and hopefully show he still has what it takes to be a top player in this league. @to12143

Florence Clijsters Panthers had a respectable season on the Panthers, but will have to pick up the slack defensively to ensure the success of their Cyclones team. @enigmatic

James Dekens Rage also had more of a defensive role, posting a great plus/minus and still potting 20 pts. Let's hope he finds some of that magic on this team as well. @monkey10pts

Gary Grease Jets will no longer wear a letter for the Cyclones but is still ever as important in the leadership of this team. Having a good s49 campaign, he will look to be a rock in the locker room as moves continue to be made on this Jets team. @FlappyGiraffe

Otis B. Driftwood Dragons is coming in from the defunct Hydras team with a lot to prove. He had an amazing 44 pt season and is one of if not the best 2way defensemen in the game. Driftwood does everything right and will lock down the Dragons defense for seasons and seasons to come. @Slappydoodle

GOD McZehrl Chiefs was part of a humongous trade to the Chiefs but has not made them regret it. Scoring 45 pts last season, McZehrl is building great chemistry with his new team and really becoming a star defenseman in the league. We will watch with interest to see if the Chiefs make a return to the playoffs anytime soon, and if they do, it will likely be on McZerhl's back. @Chris-McZehrl

Jon Toner Panthers had a freakish year on the Panthers, scoring 50 in 50 and putting his name in the hat for MVP of the s49 season. He is a great all-around defenseman and will really add a ton of poise and scoring prowess to an already gifted team. @JT3

Ensio Kalju Wolfpack can do much much more than just throw hands, he has a lot of defensive skills that make him quite the asset to the Wolfpack, as he proved this season. He has flourished with a change of scenery and really proved he is a fantastic SHL defenseman. @jRuutu

Tommy Tuck Blizzard had a bit of a down year in s49 but is still one of the best goaltenders in the game. He really stepped up when it mattered and won his second cup, including a finals sweep to seal the deal. He is a great fit behind a stacked Cyclones squad that showcases many of his cup champ teammates as well. @Muford

Chris Partridge pride is still an elite talent in this league, though the stats might not show it. He has been getting shelled for the past few seasons as the Pride defense still finds its footing, and hopefully they can go on a run soon while he is still in the prime of his SHL career. @Mackkz

Alternate Captain 2
Viktor Marius Stampede had another great year and is still a terrific choice for a letter on this squad. With a lot of youth in the Buffalo pipeline, they all look to Marius as a leader figure and he does a damn fine job. @karey

Alternate Captain 1
Mikhail Lokitonov Stars had one of the highest point totals in recent memory and still sported a negative plus/minus. Kidding aside he is THE guy on Toronto right now and as they continue to build through the draft and get their goaltending figured out, Lokitonov will be looked upon to lead the team in the right direction. I don't think he will let Toronto down. @ml002

Captain
Brady McIntyre Blizzard proudly dons the C as it stands for Cyclones, Czechia, and most importantly Challenge Cup Champion. A down year as a team for the Blizzard meant nothing to McIntyre as he propelled the squad to their second cup win of the decade. A natural leader and great presence on and off the ice, McIntyre is a face for the Edmonton franchise and the SHL as a whole. @caltroit_red_flames

Now that all the players have been announced, the roster is as follows:

Anders Christiansen
Brady McIntyre ©
Chris Partridge
DeMaricus Smyth
Ensio Kalju
Florence Clijsters
Gary Grease
GOD McZehrl
Iam Essellemm
James Dekens
Jon Toner
Manuel Gotze
Mikhail Lokitonov (A)
Mikkel Haugen
Otis B. Driftwood
Reginald Rove
Shooter McGavin
Tommy Tuck
Viktor Marius (A)
Yannick Berger

Line Speculation-
Line 1
Marius-Smyth-Lokitonov

The S39 Power trio, these guys have terrorized the league for a few seasons now. Marius will be able to play a good 2-way game while Smyth and Lokitonov do their thing offensively. Smyth looks to be the goal scorer on this line but I wouldn't be surprised to see Lokitonov or Marius step into the role as well.

Line 2
McGavin-Christiansen-Gotze

A first line caliber second line, Gotze is definitely capable of being the triggerman on this line. These guys will form a 1-2 punch with the first line to really not allow any breathing room for the opposing teams.

Line 3
Rove-Haugen-Essellemm

An amazingly talented third line, Rove will absolutely be the scorer and Essellemm will set him up all day. Haugen will be able to screen, play defense, whatever he needs to do. This is a very balanced third line that will change the pace of the game from the run and gun top 6.

Line 4
Berger-Clijsters-Dekens

A respectable 4th line, Dekens will have to make sure his linemates perform to expectations as at times they were weak defensively. This will likely be a shutdown line and we will see what they are capable of both offensively and defensively.

Defense Pairing 1
McIntyre-Grease

Another amazing S39 connection, these guys are very capable offensively but have had defensive issues in the past. Hopefully they spend most of the time in the O zone setting up the forwards.

Defense Pairing 2
Driftwood-McZehrl

What might be the true 1st pairing, this is an insanely talented second D pair. These guys compliment each other perfectly and are very poised, they will likely shred through the opposing forwards, defense, and goalie with the greatest of ease.

Defense Pairing 3
Toner-Kalju

It just never stops, does it? Toner on the 3rd pair, and a great defensive partner in Kalju? The other team might as well wave the white flag now, because all 3 D pairing are capable of doing serious damage to your team.

Starter
Tuck
Backup
Partridge

Tuck is an excellent choice for starter but if he is off his game Partridge is more than capable than stepping in to the starter role. The coach has two goalies he can trust and that makes everything much easier for the team.

Thanks for reading, and I hope you stay tuned for more announcements regarding the SHL LEGACY TOURNAMENT.
