S78 PT #2: It Was All a Trick! Due: Sunday, August 25th @ 11:59 PM PST

Written Option 2: How does your player feel about using tricks to gain an advantage in play? If they enjoy tricks, what sort of nasty things do they do to get their advantages for their team? Embellishment? Dirty hits while the refs aren’t looking? If they aren’t keen on those sorts of tricks what could the league do to minimize these tricks from happening in games? How does your player prevent other players from doing these tricks against them?

Alexandros is very much not the type of player to do dirty little tricks like quick trips and dives or anything like that to gain advantage in games. Being an honorable warrior in his previous life he couldn’t bring himself to play in that way. As for a way to lessen its impact on the game or find a way to dissuade it he is not really sure wants to do that. Even though he doesn’t like to do it does not mean he thinks it is necessarily bad for the game and to implement rules that would actually be able to impact it might cause some aspects of “fun” in the game to be impacted so he believes nothing should be done at this time to stop its effects. Sometimes an aspect of the game should be accepted even if you don’t like it because everyone enjoys the game differently and has different styles of play, seeing how people are able to employ and use these tactics differently to get results is why he loves hockey.

As much as I would love to be the jokester on the team, I am now the veteran and I am more the type to give guidance to the young guys and keep the team in check with the goal in mind, which is to go back-to-back this season. It will not be easy but it is doable. The trick is that we need some people to lighten the mood and to KNOW when it is time to lighten the mood. If we are in a bad spot and we are going through a tough stretch, it is not the time to go around and put popcorn in someones car. Or like someone once did in the NHL, they put that purple ink in peoples gloves that goes in ATMs to stain the paper bills. That really would not fly with us here in New ENgland. We are the type to make some jokes and some pranks but lighthearted and not malicious.

Logan Webb is not above using "underhanded" tricks to gain slight advantages in play. He is a firm believer in; if you ain't cheating, you ain't trying. Over the years he has gained a few secrets that are nearly impossible for the referees to notice, here are a few.

The wholy gauntlet: This is a simple but effective technique. In the palm of his gloves there are large wholes cut out. This has given Webb the advantage of being able to grab an opponent's jersey or stick with his bare fingers. He does this while his glove itself remains open to avoid a holding penalty.

The second advantage he utilizes is stink face. Before a game Webb will look for some terrible rotten garbage or even grab a piece of feces. He will rub it on the top of his gear. Sure it smells, but Logan quickly adjusts to the smell. Opponents quickly learn to avoid Webb or they will get hit with a fresh blast. An added advantage, he gets a little extra room on the bench as well.

AT-AT is not really smart enough to play a trickster game. He's pretty much a straight-forward type of player who hangs out in his own zone blocking shots and picking fights with anyone willing to drop the gloves. And if they won't drop the gloves he'll slash them or cross check them anyway. Not a lot of subtlety to his game. But the one thing he hates is that when his rebel scum opponents use trickery against him. For example, this one time he was totally destroying a rebel base on Hoth, but some devious little jedi-in-training got the smart idea that instead of taking him head on like you would expect, he started flying circles around him wrapping cables around his legs and making him fall. It was embarrassing and made everyone start thinking he was a joke and not some menacing unstoppable foe. Then to top it all off he used an ILLEGAL light-saber to cut a hole in his equipment and threw a thermal detonator into his jock strap. Har har, really funny force-boy. AT-AT would really rather just be able to play a simple game, old school style and not have to deal with these types of shenanigans.

Yuri Boyka III does play pranks on his teammates but he goes a little bit too far. So Nevada recently made a trade to acquire Sam Volta and Gina Pinard. Boyka knew that he needed to do something to make their first time in Nevada welcoming. So what did he end up doing? He went far and beyond? Boyka and Lucas Raymond dressed up as rogue men with ski masks over their head and kidnapped Volta and Pinard from their rooms. They put a black covering over both of the new addition's faces and took them to a dark ambient place. Little did Volta and Pinard know that it was their own teammates. This was sort of an initiation /prank played by the entire Nevada team. They took them to an old beat down garage and hired male strippers. Volta and Pinard were tied to their chairs and unfortunately were hazed with a lap dance. Volta and Pinard didn't understand what was happening but they had to go through this. They then had to shove a pitcher of beer down their mouth as quickly as they could. Once all was over, the team laughed and went clubbing where they enjoyed rest of the night.

Billy Herrington has always prided himself on playing the game with integrity and respect for the sport. He’s not one to rely on cheap tricks or dirty play to gain an advantage on the ice. In fact, he finds that kind of behavior pretty distasteful. Billy believes that hockey should be about skill, strategy, and teamwork, not underhanded tactics. That being said, he’s not naive; he knows that some players will do whatever it takes to win, even if it means bending the rules. When it comes to dealing with those types of players, Billy has his own approach. He’s not one to get rattled easily, so if someone tries to pull a fast one on him, he’ll usually just shrug it off and stay focused on his game. But if it keeps happening, Billy isn’t afraid to stand up for himself or his teammates. He’ll give a stern warning or even drop the gloves if necessary, making it clear that he won’t tolerate any nonsense on the ice. Billy also thinks the league could do more to crack down on dirty play. He’d like to see stricter penalties for things like embellishment or cheap shots, to send a message that there’s no place for that in the SHL. Ultimately, though, Billy believes that the best way to prevent tricks is to outplay the opposition fair and square. He focuses on honing his skills and staying sharp so that he can outsmart and outmaneuver anyone who tries to take shortcuts.

Barg Hazbite is all about employing tricks into his game. Afterall, how do you think he became such a household name? You might not think drinking Barq's is a trick and it's just something he does, but it is actually one of his more obvious tricks. Barq's has bite! It's what it's known for! And when others have Gatorade in their water bottles during games, do you see them biting their opponents? But with Barg filling his bottle up with Barq's, it gives him immense biting power and they wouldn't even know they are getting bit because Barg is also a master of sleight of hand, or sleight of bite in this case. They got bit, but they don't even know where they got bit from and Barg just keeps on skating and keeps on scoring. Another one of Barg's tricks is barking to pair with his biting. You see, when his opponents get bit they know that something is biting them, just not what, so when Barg begins barking as well his opponents just enter a state of fear and paranoia that really rocks their game. Barg got that dog in him.

Written Option 1: Does your player play pranks on their teammates? If so, what kinds of pranks do they pull on them? How do your teammates react to these pranks? If your player isn’t the type to pull pranks themselves, are they the target of any pranks? Do they fall for them if they can be avoided? Feel free to describe how your player pranks their teammate or their reaction to getting pranked themselves!

Tom Pedersen is no stranger to the occasional prank, and he’s become quite the expert at keeping his teammates on their toes. He’s not one to go overboard, but he enjoys a good laugh and knows how to keep things light in the locker room, especially during the long, grueling season.

One of Tom’s favourite pranks involves switching out a teammate with an identical twin. It’s a harmless trick, but the look of confusion on their face when they try to pass the puck is priceless. Tom always makes sure to swap only on practice, though. He wouldn’t want to mess with anyone’s performance on the ice. And only the Solbergs are able to be swapped on the Calgary Dragons team.

Another classic is the old butter-on-the-stick trick. Tom will sneakily apply a small strip of butter to the top of a teammate’s stick. It doesn’t affect the play much, but it does make for some strange puck handling until they figure out what’s going on.

The reaction to Tom’s pranks is usually a mix of laughter and playful revenge. After all, a team that laughs together plays better together.

Written Option 2
As anybody who has watched a Trix commercial knows, tricks are for kids. Maverick Reynolds is a man...who learned from a manchild on how to play hockey. Naturally, Maverick pulls out every trick in the book on the ice. He doesn't embellish because he thinks that's "bullshit soccer tactics", and usually retaliates further if he sees someone embellish a penalty against him. That usually looks like him dropping the people's elbow on them as a sort of "oh i'll show you a penalty" deal. Once the ref turns up ice, Maverick is known to knock the hell out of whoever is nearby. His philosophy is that if Scott Stevens did it and got away with it, chances are he'll win the case in court whenever he gets suspended. Other times, I'm not sure if you can describe them as tricks, but Maverick will occasionally skate by the opposing bench with his water bottle in hand and spray each one of them in the face just to gain a mental advantage.

My player (kris) definitely has a playful side and enjoys pulling light hearted pranks on his teammates. One of his favourite pranks is the fake spider trick. Kris will sneak a plastic spider into a teammate's locker or gym bag. When the teammate discovers it, the initial shock is always followed by laughter, both from the teammate and the rest of the team who usually know about the prank.

Another favorite prank of Kris' is to change the background on a teammate's phone to something funny or embarrassing. For example he might replace it with a silly meme or an old photo from a team event that the teammate would rather forget. The reactions are priceless some teammates laugh it off, while others mockingly threaten revenge.

As for Kris, he's not immune to pranks himself. His teammates love to table the turns, especially after a good prank from Kris, one time the Maine Timber players filled Kris' car with balloons while they were at practice. When Kris returned to find their car looking like a party on wheels, He couldn't help but laugh, even though he was initially surprised. He takes it in stride knowing it’s all in good fun.

Option #2

Elliot Alderson definitively uses tricks to gain advantages. As a professional hacker, he loves hacking into the others player's social media profiles and sabotaging their feed and to create chaos. Before big games during the season and even in the playoffs, Elliot goes on his computer, and does his magic to gain access to personal info of his rivals. He uses this information to his advantage by blackmailing or embarrassing them, which makes their performance at the next game abysmal. Information is power, and Elliot knows it.

The league is non the wiser about this, since Elliot always keeps himself anonymous. He cannot get caught either, since he uses anti-tracking methods such as proxies and VPNs to stay undetected.  You have a suspicion that Elliot is the culprit? Better be careful to not confront him, because he will probably find your darkest secrets scattered on your computer and your online presence. The only way you could not get affected by his tricks would be if your life is completely offline and you are off all social medias. But in this day and age, these people are very rare...

The type of pranks Sad Ketchup plays on his Chicago Syndicate teammates are usually fairly wholesome. Usually it involves dressing up in a costume, just because Sad Ketchup likes to entertain and make others laugh. One of the big pranks Sad Ketchup usually does is in July when he pulls off his Christmas in July prank which teammates now expect but the first time was fairly funny. Sad Ketchup is very into Christmas just because he enjoys the fun, and also somewhat annoying his teammates with cheer. He will often decorate rooms in full on Christmas decorations, the first year he pulled off the prank it was the locker room, the next year was the coaches off. This year he is planning to do the video room/meeting room where many of the team meetings/video sessions take place. He usually puts up trees, Christmas lights, inflatables, villages and all Christmas decor. Usually it involves Christmas music which is normally what makes his teammates really mad, but they secretly enjoy it.

After joining the team Mia Lavoie quickly learned about Philippe Eko Eel's goofy antics getting rookies acclimated to the Atlanta Inferno, especially his PT pings and rambly hot dog pings. So my player is going to do the rational thing and ping him back in a move of ping pranking revenge, with honourary prank pings to her teammates, like @Amidships and @Renomitsu . There's a good chance the pings go ignored, but also a chance @hotdog appreciates the art of the ping in the context of a return ramble ping prank. For fun Mia might also do a little pranking out on the ice. Maybe throw a hot dog in a glove before practice, slightly unscrew a few water bottles here and there, I don't know. Whatever fairly harmless thing keeps the mood light and people laughing. Or annoyed. I don't know, Mia's still new to the team. Someone might end up just chucking her out of the team over the water bottle bit but it's worth finding out, right?
