S50 PT#2 - Phobias
#46

Yo there are some weird ass phobias out there. Arachibutyrophobia, for example, is the fear of peanut butter sticking to the roof of your mouth. Sesquipedalophobia? Fear of long words. And why the hell would you make that word so long? Seems mean. Leopold Lockhart doesn't have any weird ass phobias. He does have one pretty common one, though. Arachnophobia, fear of spiders. When Leo was a kid, he watched the movie Arachnophobia at a sleepover and he's hated those eight legged monsters ever since. Did you know that brown recluse spiders like to hide in shoes? Imagine sticking your foot in a shoe and getting bitten by a spider whose venom destroys human tissue. Absolutely horrifying. This is why Leo always shakes his shoes out before putting them on. Black widow spiders like to hang out in garages. This is why Leo lives in an apartment. He's not taking any chances. And if he does find a spider in his home? Well, I guess it's time to move. Burn the house down on the way out.

Fear of falling has been something that Phineas has combated ever since he first went on a rollercoaster with his family. He never knew that it was something he was afraid of until his brother egged him to go on one of the steepest drops a rollercoaster can have as soon as he was able to ride it. For some reason, this was a park that was open in the winter and that day it was snowing. While the wonder of the snow falling around him made the ride up quite pleasant, it was when the car almost derailed going down the drop that really set young Phineas over the edge. The resulting drop was too much for poor Phineas to handle. While this is an ever present fear it first manifested itself on the ice shortly afterwards when Phineas was given is first hit on the ice after the event. Even though he had been hit before, the sight of the ice rushing at his face reminded him of the almost disastrous drop that he had experienced the prior weekend. At first this caused a major disturbance to his play as he did everything possible to avoid being hit. This cost him his physical play development and made sure he was never going the path of a defender. As time went on and Phineas practiced, he was able to overcome the initial sense of dread and conquered his on ice fear a few years later upon finishing his 8th grade season on his team. It was in the middle of a season where his team needed a point to contend for playoffs. Phineas had barely produced that season and was on the 4th line of his team. It was the middle of the 2nd period and morale was low. It was time for Phineas’s shift and he knew he had to do something. In a fantastic play that you wouldn’t believe came from a 13 year old, he drove hard to the net and while getting knocked down he managed to bite back the terror to swing out his stick and get the puck in the net. From that moment on he was back to being fearless in skates. While his fear no longer affect him on the ice, Phineas will still do anything possible to keep himself away from ledges or railings that are too high up.

Tom Fiddler is deathly afraid of belts. So much so that he doesn't own a single one, as you might imagine someone with a belt phobia might not. Instead he wears suspenders when possible. Thankfully, hockey has little to do with belts, but it did crush his dreams of becoming a WWE wrestler. He is afraid because of a traumatic experience when he was younger. Frequently, Papa Fiddler would come home drunk, demanding to know who put holes in his belt. "WHO PUT THESE HOLES IN MY BELT??" he would scream. Removing his belt and folding it in the usual way (buckle in hand, thankfully), he would start whipping everything in the room. The chair, the walls, the lamp. Poor fiddler could do nothing but endure the onslaught of nearby-belt-cracking, the wind from such blows nearly tussling his hair astray. Tom Fiddler never learned who put those holes in his daddys belt, but he hoped some day he would catch the bastard.

So, alright this one's gonna be stupid, but for me, hooks. Always. I, Joseph Weston, have always been terrified of hooks. Growing up, that page of the Guinness Book of World Records that had the guy dragging a car by hooks in his back brought me to many a shiver and chills out of nowhere. Going fishing with family was not so much a bonding experience but instead a time of infinite excuses to never reel in the line. First aid on hook injuries? God no, don't even get me started. You have to push the barb out and then snip it off. Doesn't matter how minimal that diagram is in the scouting handbook, that shit gets me every time. Needles? Fine. Heights? Not a problem. Spiders? Creepy but doable. But hooks? No. Not happening, in any way. That's why I always avoid hooking penalties as much as possible, even if they barely resemble it, I can't possibly be related to that in any way. Not one bit.

Mika Kandinsky has always had a fear of failure. It might be one of the single greatest driving forces for Mika's on ice play. It's a fear that does not cripple him, but makes him perform better. This fear driving him, pushes him to train harder and to play better on the ice. When he decided to come to North America to play in the SHL, Mika knew that failing and going back to Russia was not an option for him. He fears failing in the SHL and having to go back to Siberia to work in his parent's vodka distillery. This fear of failure started early in Mika's life. It stems from how harsh his parents would be when he would make mistakes in school or during his peewee hockey games. Mika grew up wanting to succeed for fear of failure. That drive has stuck with him and continues to push him to train as hard as possible and to play as well as possible in his games. Now that he is in the SHL full time, his new fear is not being able to cut it and being sent back to Juniors or being cut from the team. So far things have been going well for him, which should be no surprise. He'll work as hard as hey can to stave off his fear of failure.

When he was 4 years old, Markus' parents decided to throw him a big birthday party, inviting all of his neighbourhood friends and their parents to share cake and do some fun activities together (they had a bounce house and everything, truly a child's dream come true).

Unfortunately, the dream turned to nightmare when young Markus was introduced to Kung, a "friendly" clown that was supposed to be the peak of the day's entertainment. Tegernako burst into tears at the mere sight of Kung, running inside the house and refusing to leave his room until the clown had disappeared from sight.

What Markus' parents didn't understand, is that a year prior, his babysitter decided to watch the original "It" movie (the one with Tim Curry, for all the younglings) with Markus wide awake next to her. This, of course, developed into a full-fludged Coulrophobia, or the acute fear of clowns.

To this day, Markus cannot stand the presence of clowns, even going so far as threatening to beat up a clown that had come close to his viscinity. Although his threat felt empty since his eyes were already fully wet with tears...

The thing Benjamin Blue, goalie of the Tampa Bay Barracuda, is spiders and most bugs in general. From ants to flies, from mosquitoes to spiders. Every little bug he sees, he very much wants to kill it, but he can't. what if it jumps on his face? what if he misses and it bites him? what if it's poisonous? what if it's not actually dangerous at all and it is just a really stupid fear that he's too lazy to get over? Nah, can't be. Blue makes sure to hire others to clean his house in case of any spiderwebs or something. he's scared of those too.
Blue also is extremely socially anxious. like it's ridiculous. Even though he does many fan signings, he's a scared boi inside. Bruh if only he didn't have those fears he would feel a lot better right now

If there was one phobia for Knox Booth that over and above all the rest rang supreme, it has to be heights. This is an unfortunate fear to have and is one that Knox constantly has to battle against every single time the team takes a flight to a new location. It doesn’t matter where Knox is seated, and in fact he prefers not to be next to the window as every time he looks in the window’s direction he’s reminded again of the fact that he is thousands of feet up in the air and can’t do a thing about it. Knox is forced to sit and wait while his life dangles in the hands of the pilots on board, and no matter how many pills of medication he takes, Knox is unable to fall asleep on flight. Knox has taken therapy and even tried to battle against the fear by taking flying lessons (he didn’t make it through the first lesson). Knox isn’t sure exactly how this fear developed within him as it has been something that has haunted him since he can remember. It doesn’t matter how many times Knox finds himself on a plane, each time he ascends the steps to enter the airplane his heart begins beating a mile a minute and sweat forms at the top of his brow. The only aspect of retirement Knox looks forward to is the fact that he won’t have to fly again (not unless he has no choice).

Phobias... phobias... yeah, Ronlain has one. It's not anything crazy or special. He just doesn't like spiders. He never has and probably never will to be honest. One time in high school he woke up with a spider descending from the ceiling right on top of him and completely lost his shit. He didn't sleep right for an entire week. Big or small, venomous or not, Ronlain has a deep, deep fear of these creatures. Even being in the same room as one freaks him out. If he knows that it's there he cant get it out of his head and simply needs to get rid of it. Fortunately, hockey sticks make for pretty good long range spider killing tools. He sleeps with a stick by his bed every night just in case he has to wake up and immediately deal with one of those eight legged demons once more.

Noah has a great fear about glass shattering (nelophobia) whenever he is around it. Ever since he was a young lad, he's always been terrified that when he walks by a pane of a glass or when he holds a glass of water that the glass will spontaneously shatter into a thousand sharp and tiny fragments, cutting him severely or potentially fatally. Nobody knows where this phobia came from. Noah never had any incidents with being cut by glass when he was a child or seeing somebody severely maimed by glass, yet he fears it dearly. He goes out of his way to avoid drinking anything out of a glass, or eating anything off of a glass plate/bowl. He refuses to take the window seat when riding in a vehicle. He even avoids going for a hit on somebody when they're along the boards because he fears that his pure strength would demolish his opponent and shatter the Plexiglas around the rink.

The clock was winding down, the puck made its way into the offensive end and around the boards, Michaud came bombing down the slot looking to sneak in and get the game tying goal late in the third. The pass found his stick and he took his shot. Time stopped. PING! He drilled the post as the clock ran down to zero. Thus began his fear of taking shots on net. You see he feared being the guy that everyone knew let the team down late. Its one thing to take your shot and own it, it is another to be willing to take the blame from the guys in his LR. Maybe it was the guy who yelled out to him from the stands “CC2 makes that shot you bum” but since that day Michaud has tried to avoid taking shots on net, the only way he can cope with the fear that was embedded into him on that day.

Gabe Johnson has one major fear...well, uh, two if you count the one hotdog already mentioned in the PT itself (god that was gross). His big fear is the fear of not meeting expectations or being inadequate. The 2nd overall pick of S48 was seen as a massive reach of a pick, as he was well behind many of the top players of the class development-wise come draft day. However, the Steelhawks were very impressed by his personality, attitude and commitment, so they took the gamble on him. Ever since, Johnson, although very proud and happy as a Steelhawk, is constantly worried about the possibility that he winds up not being the same level of player as people like Kaspars Claude, Mika Kandinsky, Calogero Crudelli, Lyle Odelein III, etc. Gabe has been working incredibly hard to try and match the level of the top players in his class, and is steadily closing the gap for sure, but that won't stop him from being worried about the possibility of Hamilton making the wrong choice taking him. Having just been called up to the big league this season, Johnson has 5 points in 12 games, which is very solid, and should help calm his nerves a bit as he continues to attempt to develop into a franchise player for the team that put so much faith into him.
