Aiming for the cap – A theoretical guide to 425 TPE Builds
#1

Hello there. It is I, Jean-Uhtred Ragnarsson-Tremblay. Are you a young rookie who recently got drafted or signed and has no idea what to do with your hard-earned TPE? Are you a sophomore SMJHL player who is just now realizing that spending TPE is a stressful business, with the looming shadow of the dreadful TPE cap on the horizon? Are you a GM at loss as to what you should recommend to your new players? Fear no more, for I have crunched the numbers for you.

What is this?
This is exactly what you’ve always dreamed of since I made this article about how to make a 155 TPE build for each FHM player role: an article about how to make a 425 TPE (or close enough, see below) build for each FHM player role.
Just as last time, I will start with a disclaimer to say that I have not ran any test or actual stats analysis based on players currently in the league and their stats. I am a man of theoretical science, so I have made a strict guideline that made sense to me in theory and stuck to it.

How does it work?
I learned a lot since my last article, and thus I’m going to change both the process and the goal of building these… builds.

First, the process. Every build has a certain number of Important Attributes, one of those being labelled as the Key Attribute. But that doesn’t mean other attributes are useless. Furthermore, knowing that these builds are capped and every TPE counts, going too high on the Key and Important Attributes means sacrificing a lot of TPE that could be better used to make a better player overall. I will therefore create a second terminology: Major Attributes, Minor Attributes, and Useless Attributes. These will vary depending on the position. Here they are:

Forward Attributes (assuming winger unless faceoff is and Important Attribute)
Major: Screening, Getting Open, Passing, Puckhandling, Shooting Accuracy, Offensive Read, Checking, Positioning, Stickchecking, Defensive Read, Acceleration, Agility, Balance, Speed, Strength
Minor: Shooting Range, Hitting, Shot Blocking, Bravery
Useless: Faceoffs, Fighting, Agression

Defenseman Attributes:
Major: Getting Open, Passing, Puckhandling, Shooting Range, Offensive Read, Checking, Hitting, Positioning, Stickchecking, Shot Blocking, Defensive Read, Acceleration, Agility, Balance, Speed, Strength
Minor: Bravery
Useless: Screening, Faceoffs, Fighting, Aggression.

You will notice one attribute is missing. Stamina has proven itself as the one All-Important Attribute for players with a 425 builds playing big minutes. It will be considered an important attribute for every single role. I also considered every forward where Faceoffs wasn't an Important Attribute to be a winger, because it otherwise add a constraint I didn't want to deal with. I did the same last time around and nobody complained so why bother? I you're a center, try to bring it to 11 at least.

Here’s how the builds will be constructed, step-by-step:
  • Key Attribute is 15 (62 TPE)

  • Important Attributes are 13 (32 TPE each)

  • All Major Attributes left are 11 (16 TPE each)

  • All Minor Attributes left are 9 (6 TPE each)

  • Useless Attributes are left at 5

Now, the goal of all this. An obvious problem with this methodology is that some roles have more Important Attributes than others. Some have Important Attributes that are Major Attributes, some have otherwise Useless Attributes as their Key Attribute. I thought about balancing this for a long time, and gave up, because I wanted a constant methodology, not to think about every single build at long lengths. So I changed my objective: the builds you are going to see are not exactly capped at 425. Some are a bit lower, some are a bit higher, but they are all close enough in range so I could judge them, recommend a few twists, and leave you with yet some thinking material before making your final choice of build. This article is meant to provide guidelines, so it contains what a player would look like following the methodology I thought worked best after a few tries. I’ll comment on how one might get to (or at least closer to) 425 when it’s way off, but I’m trusting you to take these and make them your own. In short, these are rough, highly customizable estimations of what a ~425 TPE player might look like.

Off to a great start, the first build is over budget in terms of TPE. This is actually the case most often than not, with -13 being the most common scenario: a fifth of the builds (7/35) are 13 TPE over. There are a few ways to go about this: taking 15 TPE from the Key Attribute to lower it to 14, taking 8 TPE out of two Important Attributes to lower them both to 12, taking 16 TPE from one Important Attribute and lower it to 11 (I would rarely recommend this over the previous option), taking 5 TPE from three Major Attributes and lower them all to 10 (again, I would rarely recommend bringing a major attribute to 9).

All of these leave us with a few extra TPE to put in some of the Useless Attributes, or to bank but there is one last option that gets us to 425 exactly : taking 8 TPE from an Important Attribute and 5 from a Major Attribute. That's what I would recommend in the Perimeter Shooter case, and I'd likely choose Balance and Stickchecking for it.

This one is great. Great offensive threat, solid enough defensively. I'd use two of the three remaining TPE to get some Faceoffs skill, in case there's a need to play off-position and take a faceoff.

Three TPE available, and I'd probably go with freeing five more, taking them from keeping Strength or Stickchecking at 10. With now eight TPE available, you can take your pick from any other Major Attribute and bring it to 12. I'd take Shooting Accuracy for a Speedy Forward, but that's a personal choice at that point.

Our first center build according to the building process! If you're a winger, congratulations, you have a ton of TPE you can take from Faceoffs too. I don't like Getting Open not being and Important Attribute for this one. I don't care if that's how FHM is, it's wrong. You need to be open to get the puck and take it into a position to make a play. Luckily, there's 3 TPE still available and one could easily take 5 from Screening (we're looking at a center, so I'm not going to touch Defensive or Physical Attributes) and bring Getting Open to 12.

Back to -13, and it's a hard one to bring back to 425. I don't have any proof to that claim, but I'm pretty sure there is a larger amount of deflection goals in FHM than in reality, or maybe that's just in the SHL because of the TPE scales for goalies making it harder to score otherwise. Either way, I believe a Screener like that playing with the right teammates and tactics could be deadly, so I don't want to touch the high Screening. Faceoffs to 12 and Speed, or maybe Passing, to 10 might do it.

Now this is one of the worst ones, second-worst of all in terms of going over the cap (can you guess which build will be the worst? Obviously keeping the Strength at 15 isn't an option here, but even after bringing it to 14, one would need to bring an Important Attribute down to 12 to finally be good, Getting Open would probably be a safe bet.

Keeping it as is sounds like a safe idea, but keeping any Major Attribute at 10 to bring another on to 12 is doable and gets us to 425 exactly. It's petty flexible this way, but I wouldn't touch Positioning or Checking unless it's to improve them.

Now, what to do with this one? One of the most balanced builds as it is, so I would say taking the outlier 15 in Defensive Read and bringing it back to 14 is the best way to go under the cap. Put the two that are then left in Aggression, or keep them. Centers are likely to choose this role, so Defensive Read to 13 to get a lot of TPE into Faceoffs might also work.

I honestly can't see why this role needs that much Shooting Accuracy. Keeping it at 11 to stay under the cap would be my way to go. Accuracy at 12 and one of Screening, Getting Open or Passing at 10 could work too.

-17, that's a first. I think the best way to go about it would be lowering a few Important Attributes, but that one is really puzzling. Some Minor Attributes could come into play here too, Bravery at 14, Shooting Range and Shot Blocking both at 8 could work for a flush 425 build. Ask your GM about this one.

-7 is also a first, but an easier one to deal with. Get that Shooting Accuracy to 10 and Shooting Range to 8 and you're good to go. I'm really puzzled at the fact that the build with "Aggressive" in its name doesn't require Aggression at all, so you might want to free a bit of TPE for that.

I'm not a defenseman, so I might be even more way off on the following builds than I could have been before. That's a guy you want on the ice in the offensive zone, but for a 425 TPE defenseman, he might still cost you a few goals. Plus, it's hard to take TPE somewhere to go under the cap and then redistribute the leftovers. The easy way would be to go with Bravery, but I believe this needs a bit more work to make it a really good build.

The physical attributes can make up for the defensive ones who are still a bit low for a defenseman, so I already like this build better than the previous one. Bravery would still be the easy place to free up those 3 TPE to get back under the cap.

These 13 available TPE are great to get a bit more defensive while staying true to the build. Taking 5 from Hitting gives us 18 to work with, so either Defensive Read goes to 13 or it goes to 12 and either Checking or Positioning does too.

-3 again, take it from Bravery or you'll have a lot of free TPE that you won't be able to spend under the cap.

-17 is back. Taking 15 of those from Positioning and the 2 others from Bravery or Shooting Range works rather well, in my opinion.

And another one! Take it from Shooting Range and you'll end up with only 1 TPE under the cap, which is probably what you should do with the previous one too (although Bravery might be a more viable option in the case of the Two-Way Defenseman.

Now this is more like it. I like the option of freeing 2 TPE from Shooting Accuracy to have enough to bring Defensive Read to 13, but Checking, Positioning or Balance to 14 could be an interesting option too.

This Punishing thing was easier with the forwards. Getting Open, Shooting Range and Puckhandling down a step brings us back to regulation, but there's wiggle room eslewhere as well.

Another 15 TPE available, me likey. Borrowing a bit from Shooting Accuracy to get Stickchecking to 13 or just bringing Checking up to 14 should be good.

Apparently Agitators are not the worst when they're defensemen. But I don't think any defenseman should aim for any of the Enforcer-type roles as there are only 6 defensemen on a team. These roles are way more suitable for forwards, in my opinion. Choose two of Getting Open, Passing and Shooting Range and bring them down a notch alongside with Stickchecking would be my advice if you really want to go this way.

Again, Goon is a role that should be left for forwards. But it's already under the cap here so it's not as bad, you can easily use these 5 TPE to make your Shooting Accuracy just a bit better.

Again, see Goon Defenseman. Yup, we're ending the list on that very dull note.

But it's not over yet

Here is a ranking of the roles in terms of available TPE:
  1. Setup Man (19)
  2. Crease-Clearing Defenseman (15)
  3. Shutdown Defenseman (15)
  4. Old-School Defenseman (15)
  5. Quarterback (13)
  6. Punishing Forward (9)
  7. Goon Defenseman(5)
  8. Enforcer Defenseman(5)
  9. Sniper (3)
  10. Garbage Collector (3)
  11. Speedy Forward (3)
  12. Playmaker (3)
  13. Gretzky's Office (3)
  14. Counter-Attacking Forward (3)
  15. Mobile Defenseman (-1)
  16. Stay-at-Home Defenseman (-1)
  17. Point Shooter (-3)
  18. Playamaking Defenseman (-3)
  19. Rushing Defenseman (-3)
  20. Aggressive Forechecker (-7)
  21. Goon Forward (-7)
  22. Enforcer Forward (-7)
  23. Perimeter Shooter (-13)
  24. Dangler (-13)
  25. Screener (-13)
  26. Two-Way Forward (-13)
  27. Up-and-Down Winger (-13)
  28. Backchecking Forward (-13)
  29. Shadow (-13)
  30. Grinder (-17)
  31. Two-Way Defenseman (-17)
  32. Punishing Defenseman (-17)
  33. Agitator Defenseman (-17)
  34. Power Forward (-23)
  35. Agitator Forward (-39)
I tried to pull out some conclusions, but the list is mixed up from top to bottom. There might be a slight tendency that says offensive forwards and defensive defensemen are a bit easier to build than two-way players or "reverse" players (defensive forwards and offensive defensemen), but there's so many exceptions that I don't think it holds up as conclusion. The only conclusion is that Agitators. Are. The. Worst.

This is marvelous. My player is a point shooter or so and my build looks a lot like that but a bit more balanced out technically so not pure point shooter

Great work as always JURT, very interesting deep dive.

I'd like to add something to the conversation - that it is likely more important to invest in "sim important" attributes than to build towards a specific archetype. Take for example building a sniper. If you're building a sniper, I would argue that 13 in screening is an over-investment despite it being important for the sniper archetype. Even though the game says this is important, I think the TPE spent from 11 -> 13 would be better allocated to strength/balance. It might make for a lower rated sniper player role, but nonetheless result in better sim performance (perhaps?)

Food for thought!
