Blog Post 11: April 30

LULEÅ, SWEDEN --- So, it’s been a hot minute (or maybe three or four hot minutes, and maybe the minutes have had time to cool off by now) since I’ve made a blog post. I don’t have any really good reasons for that (except for maybe I was spending a lot of time learning how to cook some new things instead of blogging because my old roommates were the only ones who knew how to cook a lot of things and I had to learn so me and Olivier wouldn’t starve or have to live on takeout food all the time). So I guess that was one reason I wasn’t blogging.

But mostly I have been working really hard at trying to stay good at hockey. This season has been really, really hard. I think they changed the ice between the seasons and a lot of people have been having a lot of trouble with it. I have had to work so hard just to stay competitive and even now at the end of the whole season when I’m usually in good form I feel like I am only just now getting back to a level I felt like I was when I was in juniors. We had a really good time at worlds this year and I had a good tournament with Sweden, but then this SHL year once they made the changes to the ice I just did not play that well at all.

It has been really discouraging but I am trying to stay positive and be a leader for the team. We have some really talented younger guys now and some of the more experienced guys have gotten traded or retired. David Fantobens retired and he was our captain and I really looked up to him, and now that he is living the high life and sipping margaritas or whatever I have tried to step up and be a good positive presence in the locker room. (I also want to say that Fanto deserves the margaritas I am not trying to take a dig at him but it is a bummer not having him on the bench).

Playoffs are starting now and we are not even in them, which is something I am not really used to. Even when we didn’t go very far in the playoffs we were usually in them to start with, and it sort of stings to watch other people get to keep playing while my season is over so early. But it is just more motivation for us to get better and be a better team later.

We have had some changes in our front office too and that has been pretty exciting. I guess you could say we are rebuilding now, so we have had to say goodbye to some people and hello to some new ones. Overall though, even if we are not a playoff team this year, I really am excited to be part of this team for the future. We are only going to get better from here and there is nowhere else I would rather be. After all, we are definitely the best team in Florida and it’s not even a contest anymore since West Kendall are going to Baltimore now (we were already the best team in Florida no matter what Tony Ford says though).

I guess you could say I really feel like Florida is my home now. I mean, Sweden will always be my HOME home but even when I am home there I sort of miss Florida while I’m gone. The beach is great and I have learned how to get tan instead of just burning. It is so humid here, but I have gotten used to sweating through four different t-shirts a day and I’ve also gotten better at doing laundry because of that. I like to take my dog Maxim out for runs along the beach. Running in the sand is actually a lot harder than running on the cement or other surfaces, and it takes up a lot more energy, so I get in a better workout than I would if I was just running on the sidewalk.

Another thing I am spending time on now that my season is over is playing Animal Crossing with some of the other guys in the league. It is maybe a pretty silly thing to get excited about but the world is a weird place right now and I think we all deserve to have some silly things we get excited about. My Animal Crossing island is pretty great - I have a bunch of little restaurants I built; a little desert cafe and a seafood restaurant and a Swedish coffee shop and a little flower and fruit themed tea room. I just finished all the restaurants and now I have to decide what I want to do next. I think I saw somebody who has a whole DJ plaza set up and even though I already have the plaza that comes with the game I think it would be fun to do that. I am also trying to get all of my hybrid flowers because I want to make a big Swedish flag with the blue and yellow ones, but the blue ones are all hybrids so it takes some time to get them! If you can get your friends to come over and water your flowers, you also get more of the hybrid ones, so I am trying to convince everybody to come over and water them.

Anyway, that is really all that’s been going on in my life. I am hoping that the next time I write, I will have more exciting things to say - I hope I am better at hockey again or maybe the ice has gotten easier to skate on, because this year was just crazy hard. I didn’t get a single one of the milestones they track for wingers, which is really depressing because I usually get five or six of them. I feel like a rookie all over again even though I have been in the SHL several seasons now! But I have to believe if I keep working and don’t give up, I’ll get back to where I was. And if I don’t…well, I will have to get a lot better at cooking and open a restaurant.
